Softbound. Condición: Very Good. Octavo, paper covers, xiv, 432 pp., b/w illustratations, notes, glossary, index This fascinating interdisciplinary collection of essays brings gender issues to the foreground in order to redress a profound imbalance in the historiography of the Yishuv, the Jewish community in Palestine, and in the early years of the State of Israel. Although male discourse still dominates this field, some initial studies have begun to create an authentic and multifaceted Hebrew-Israeli voice by examining the activities and contributions of women. This research has led to a number of basic questions: What was the reality of life for women in Jewish society in Ottoman and Mandatory Palestine (Eretz Israel), and in the early years of the State? What was the contribution of women to the renewal of Israeli society and culture? What is the place of gender perceptions in the study of the new local identity? The original articles in this anthology forge an innovative response to one or more of these questions, and reflecting the state of research in the field.…

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. One of the best sailing writers on this planet. Keiran Flatt, Editor, Yachting Monthly There was, however, one voyage and what happened on that voyage was so far beyond the compass of what I thought possible that I have never, until this moment, said or written a single word about it. Solo sailor Roger D. Taylor has written many books about his voyages to the Arctic. Some years ago, he made a voyage about which, until now, he has remained silent. What happened on that voyage was so unexpected and so devastating that Taylor threw all his logbooks and records overboard while still in the Greenland Sea. It was a voyage he wanted to erase from his memory forever. Time has now healed the traumas of that fateful passage, and Taylor has decided that the moment has come to relate what happened. Using just his memory, he has reconstructed the story of that summer cruise to the Far North and the terrible events that blighted it. In telling this untold story, the author hopes to lay to rest the ghosts which have haunted him for so long. In his gripping new book, Roger D. Taylor reveals the haunting story behind the most devastating voyage of his career. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Far to the north of Russia, across the cold waters of the Barents Sea, lies the desolate archipelago known as Franz Josef Land. Hidden away still further to the north and west of those islands is one of the most inaccessible and least known seas on this planet the Queen Victoria Sea. In his fifth book of voyages, Roger Taylor describes his successful attempt to sail into those lonely and usually icebound waters. On the way he weathers the most northerly point of the Svalbard islands before sailing due east along 810North to the north-west coast of Franz Josef Land. Pack-ice would normally render such a route impossible. This voyage, which linked the endpoints of Taylors two previous Arctic voyages to the north-west and north-east of Svalbard, marks the culmination of nearly fifty years of small-boat ocean sailing.Taylor has been described in the yachting press as one of the best sailing writers on this planets and the best-balanced writer you will ever read. His books combine vivid description with deep reflection, humour, an intimate knowledge of ocean species and a lifetime of practical sea-going experience. Far to the north of Russia, across the cold waters of the Barents Sea, lies the desolate archipelago known as Franz Josef Land. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. Quarto in dust jacket, frontispiece map, xxii, 236 pp., many b/w photos, index Articles are "Ten Percent of American Jews," Ira Sheskin, "Alligators and Matzo Balls: A Historical Overview of the Florida Jewish Community," Marcia Kerstein Zerivitz, "Blood and Sand: The Jewish Community of South Florida," Stephan J. Whitfield, "Anti-Semtiism in Florida Culture," Henry Abramson, "Cuban Jews in South Florida: Exile Redux," Stephen Benz, "Sephardic Jews in South Florida," Annette B. Fromm, "From Swamp to 'Shayna Platz': Jewish Life in Broward County (Historical Photos from the Jewish Museum of Florida)," Zerivitz, "Jews of Boca Raton," Linda Brockman, "Yiddishkeit in South Beach: 'IWant to Be With You to Sing My Songs,'" Joel Saxe, "Life on South Beach: A Photographic Portfolio," Gary Monroe, "Jewish Gangsters Starring Meyer Lansky," Jack B. Moore, "Leon Kronish: Miami Beach's Twentieth-Century Prophet," Henry A. Green, "Synagogues in the Sand," Zev Ben Beitchman "Jewish Education in South Florida," Susan Neimand, "A History of the National Council of Jewish Women, Greater Miami Section," Joanie Glickstein, "Yizkor: Survivor Narratives at the Miami Holocaust Memorial," Andrea Greenbaum, "Behind the Cultural Facade: Yiddish Cultural Revival in Miami," David Weintraub. "When we think of Jewish South Florida, we may think first of the generation of aging Jews who moved to South Beach from the 1940s to the 1970s to create a rich Yiddish culture on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. Yet these "snowbirds" are just one group in what has become an increasingly diverse South Florida Jewish population. The tri-county area of Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach is home to a community of more than 625,000 Jews- about --10 percent of American Jews and comprises nearly 200 congregations, 3 major Jewish federations, 20 Hebrew day schools, a world-recognized Holocaust memorial, and more. Yet no single book offers an overview of this vital Jewish community. The South Florida Jewish community is distinguished from other Jewish communities in the U.S. by its diverse population. Like the post-war generation of snowbirds, tens of thousands of retirees (most from the Atlantic seaboard but some from cold climates elsewhere in the United States), currently live in "gated communities," like Century Village in Boca Raton, and maintain strong ties with the communities they left behind. But the Jewish community in South Florida also has a distinctive Latin flavor, which began with the post-Castro migration of Cubans. Hispanic Jews have moved to South Florida from several Latin American nations, and these Spanish-speaking Jews have worked hard to maintain their cultural heritage even as they have adapted to life in the United States. South Florida is also home to the largest community of Holocaust survivors in the country. More recent Jewish immigrants from Arab nations, the Soviet Union, and Israel have added to the distinctive diversity of Jewish life in South Florida." from the flap copy.…

Hardbound. Condición: Very Good. Octavo in dust jacket, xiv, 191 pp., notes, index "Born in rural Hesse, Germany, Leo Strauss (18991973) became an active Zionist and philosopher during the tumultuous and fractious Weimar Republic. As Eugene R. Sheppard demonstrates in this groundbreaking and engaging book, Strauss gravitated towards such thinkers as Franz Rosenzweig, Martin Heidegger, and Carl Schmitt as he sought to identify and overcome fundamental philosophical, political, and theological crises. The rise of Nazism impelled Strauss as a young Jewish émigré, first in Europe and then in America, to grapple withand accommodate his thought tothe pressing challenges of exile. In confronting his own state of exile, Strauss enlisted premodern Jewish thinkers such as Moses Maimonides and Baruch Spinoza who earlier addressed the problem of reconciling their competing loyalties as philosophers and Jews. This is the first study to frame Strauss's political philosophy around his critique of liberalism and the problem of exile. Sheppard follows Strauss from Europe to the United States, a journey of a conservative Weimar Jew struggling with modern liberalism and the existential and political contours of exile. Strauss sought to resolve the conflicts of a Jew unwilling to surrender loyalty to his ancestral community and equally unwilling to adhere to the strictures of orthodox observance. Strauss saw truth and wisdom as transcending particular religious and national communities, as well as the modern enlightened humanism in which he himself had been nurtured. In his efforts to navigate between the Jewish and the philosophical, the ancient and the modern, Berlin and New York, Strauss developed a distinctively programmatic way of reading and writing "between the lines." Sheppard recaptures the complexity and intrigue of this project which has been ignored by those who both reject and claim Strauss's legacy." from the flap copy.…
