Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. As A.W. Renall's 1902 obituary noted: "For a quarter of a century he was the most notable personage in Masterton; and on the public platform swayed people as no other man could move them". Alfred Renall, an early settler in the Hutt Valley and then in the Wairarapa, was a successful miller, father of 16 children and at various times a Provincial Council member, elected to the first Parliament, he was also a Masterton borough councillor and twice the mayor as well as a leading figure in the Small Farms Association and subsequent Masterton Trust Lands Trust. As his friend Alexander Hogg M.P. said: "An energetic and industrious settler, a public man, fearless and outspoken for over a half century he made his influence felt in the wider Wellington province." Fearless and Outspoken is the story of Alfred W. Renall from his birth in Heybridge, Essex, England in 1813 to his and his family's voyage to Port Nicholson aboard the Martha Ridgway late in 1840, followed by his rich, varied and sometimes controversial life during the next six decades. It provides a fascinating portrait of one pioneer and how he and his family succeeded in a very different land at the bottom of the world. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Private Melville King of Carterton was a tiny part of New Zealand's huge manpower contribution to the Allied armies in World War One. His diary, recording what he did and what he saw, reflects the military service of an ordinary young man half the globe away from home and in extraordinary circumstances. His perceptive and detailed view of the Great War adds an important 'voice' to the New Zealand understanding of that tragic and crucial event. Melve King's words are supported by additional text explaining facets of his army life and the major campaigns and battles of the New Zealand Division on the Western Front. Melve faithfully recorded many of the Wairarapa men he served with and these are detailed in an extensive personnel index. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. In early 1928, during a time of pioneering, long-distance flights, two New Zealand pilots set off from Australia on the first attempted aerial crossing of the wild Tasman Sea. Amid fervent hope, government interference, a spirit of patriotism, wide newspaper coverage and family pride, John 'Scotty' Moncrieff and George Hood, along with their non-flying partner Ivan Kight, dreamed of closer British Empire ties, a safer New Zealand and a shot at aviation glory. The disappearance of their aircraft Aotearoa remains one of Australasia's great flying mysteries. Bill Conroy has researched this fascinating and tragic story for more than three decades. In the first full-length examination of Moncrieff and Hood's flight, he recounts the conception, planning, execution and aftermath of the project which enthralled both sides of the Tasman. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

Soft cover. Condición: Good. 3rd Edition. A good copy. The Masterton the first settlers knew was not the leveled and well-ordered town of today. Although there were significant areas of grassland and fern, there were also some large pockets of lowland forest. As Gareth Winter writes: "Masterton's progress was slow at first. Queen Street was an unlined pathway, formed by digging ditches in the boggy ground to the side and throwing the refuse onto the roadway to elevate it. Stumps were not removed, but buried under the spoil." The Look of Masterton tells of the town's beginnings and progress over the last 150 years. With an informative text indicating the milestones along the way, the story is principally told through a collection of photographs - many published for the first time - that brilliantly evoke Masterton's transformation from wooden village to thriving 21st century town. Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. A very clean copy with an insciption. Feels unread. Masterton and Greytown, further down the Wairarapa valley, were the first planned inland towns in New Zealand. Masterton?s history now stretches back over 150 years. Gareth Winter writes: "Masterton?s progress was slow at first. Queen Street was an unlined pathway, formed by digging ditches in the boggy ground to the side and throwing the refuse onto the roadway to elevate it. Stumps were not removed, but buried under the spoil." Just how Masterton's streets came to be named is a series of fascinating stories, often full of mystery and sometimes hidden in confusion. There is a King Street not named after a king at all. One of the longest streets was once known as Short Street and one street in the middle of town had to be officially opened recently so it could be officially closed! Mayors, members of parliament, prominent settlers, priests and military leaders - all have had streets named after them, and many of the street names carry wonderful stories from the past.…

Soft cover. Condición: Near Fine. 1st Edition. This copy has a small ownership stamp and otherwise appears unread. Dear Tyrant, as his wife called him, is the story of Albert James Allom (1825-1909), his family and childhood, his adventurous youth, his relationship with Edward Gibbon Wakefield, his struggle for success, and his philosophy of life. His story begins in London then moves to New Zealand and, later, the West Indies before he returns to New Zealand. Later again, seven years are spent in Tasmania before a final return to New Zealand. In New Zealand he was a survey cadet for the New Zealand Company in Wellington, Manawatu and Otago before becoming an enterprising run-holder in the Wairarapa, a mining and farming estate manager on Great Barrier Island, the registrar of mines at Thames and Ohinemuri goldfields, and eventually a very active retiree in Auckland. The story of his life is laced with human insight, humour and tragedy. Many notable figures during New Zealand's colonial era appear in Allom's own writings which add immediacy to the narrative and there are poignant passages about his beloved wife, Eliza, and their family of nine children.…

Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. A very good clean copy. "It was.a night of terror. Houses swayed, water pipes burst, crockery smashed and walls cracked. Many people rushed outside as chimneys crashed to the ground and it was miraculous no-one was harmed." With eye-witness accounts and newspaper reports, Jan McLaren has created, 60 years later, a vivid word picture of the June 24 1942 earthquake that literally changed Wairarapa overnight. A Night of Terror traces the history of Wairarapa and Wellington region earthquakes and the reasons for them. It recreates the dramatic events of June 24 and the aftermath in Masterton, the other towns in the valley and Wairarapa?s countryside. There are the frantic efforts to remove dangerous ornamentation and demolish damaged buildings as the aftershocks continued. There are the attempts to repair and rebuild at a time when the outcome of World War Two was still very much in the balance. A Night of Terror is illustrated with a unique collection of photographs, very few of them published before.…

Soft cover. Condición: Near Fine. 1st Edition. A very clean copy. Vivid inscription. Safe Haven traces the life of Featherston Military Camp and, through letters, diaries and reminiscences, the men who lived there. The camp left a legacy in buildings, photographs and the site itself, now quiet land alongside State Highway Two, east of Featherston. The building of Featherston Military Camp in late 1915 transformed a stony paddock east of Featherston township in south Wairarapa into a ready-made barrack town which could house up to 8,000 raw soldiers at a time. Volunteers and conscripts from all parts of the country came to Featherston, spending two to four months in training, our largest military base their temporary home before they left the safety of New Zealand to endure the heaviest wartime casualties this country has suffered. They lived in barracks and tents, enduring the good and bad of camp life and Featherston's lively climate. The infantry then marched over the Rimutaka Range to Trentham Camp before taking ship for the Western Front. In total about 55,000 men trained at the Featherston Military Camp between 1916-19.(TM).…

Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. A very clean copy with some laid in related ephemera. The first comprehensive survey of the Wairarapa's diverse and historically significant architecture. With the country's two oldest inland towns Greytown and Masterton in the region, "Wairarapa Buildings" surveys a fascinating microcosm of two centuries of New Zealand architecture; of humble and stately homes, farmsteads and out-buildings, churches and commercial premises, hotels and public buildings. The book traces the history of building styles in New Zealand, and takes the reader on tours to view more than 500 of the region's most interesting buildings. David Kernohan is an architect, Wairarapa resident and a former associate professor and dean of the Faculty of Architecture at Victoria University of Wellington.…
