Reverend James Ellesby (b. 1644) preaches in typical evangelical fashion, exhorting his congregation to be in a continuous state of repentance, not just on their deathbed. Ellesby warns that their souls are vulnerable to the clutches of Hell should they not heed his advice: "Remember your immortal Souls are in danger every hour, every Moment that you live in any known wilful Sin, and refuse to repent of it: Life is short, frail, and uncertain" (14). The devout must be spiritually prepared for death to strike at any moment. From this pamphlet, one gains a sense of the precariousness of life in the seventeenth-century and the entwinned concepts of faith, death, and illness. ------- Rev. Ellesby also wrote "A Caution Against Ill Company, Or, A Discourse Shewing the Danger of Conversing Familiarly With Bad Men" and "The Sick Christian's Companion".…

Hardcover. Condición: Very good. No jacket. First authorised edition. First authorised, separate edition. 8vo. Contemporary blind-tooled calf, rebacked in modern calf with morocco title label lettered in gilt. Thomas Hobbes' (here spelt 'Hobbs') Behemoth is a dialogue on the causes and course of the English Civil Wars, composed in 1668 but long suppressed by Charles II on account of its forthright political analysis. It circulated in unauthorised continental editions in the 1670s, and in an illicit London issue of 1679/81, before appearing in its first authorised form in 1682, when the London publisher William Crooke printed it, including it at the head of his Tracts of Mr. Thomas Hobbs of Malmsbury. The edition was presented as taken directly from Hobbes' corrected manuscript in an effort to supersede the corrupt earlier printings. Book.…

Condición: Wie neu. Folio (21 cm x 32 cm). [12], 376, [20] pages without the original frontispiece but substituted by the hand-coloured portrait and including the copperengraving with Littleton coat of arms (facing page 1 of the text). Modern Hardcover / 20th century half leather with spinelabel. New endpapers. Excellent condition with only minor signs of browing, some occasional, mild foxing. Some contemporary annotations (page 286) [The portrait, "Edouard Zittleton. Premier Justicier d'Angleterre", which accompanies the book, comes from Pierre Duflos de Jeune's publication, "Deuxieme recueil des portraits des hommes et des femmes illustres, de toutes les nations connues, présentes sous le costume de leurs dignites, []", Paris, 1787]. Edward Littleton, 1st Baron Lyttleton (also Littelton) (1589 27 August 1645), from Munslow in Shropshire, was a Chief Justice of North Wales. He was descended from the judge and legal scholar, Thomas de Littleton. His father, also Edward, had been Chief Justice of North Wales before him. He was educated at Oxford before becoming a lawyer. In 1614 he became an MP for Bishop's Castle, Shropshire in the Addled Parliament. In 1625 he was again returned to Parliament for Leominster and Caernarfon borough. In 1628 he was chairman of the Committee of Grievances upon whose report the Petition of Right was based. As a member of the party opposed to the arbitrary measures of Charles I, Littleton had shown more moderation than some of his colleagues, and in 1634, three years after he had been chosen Recorder of London, the king attached him to his own side by appointing him Solicitor General. In the famous case about ship money, Sir Edward argued against John Hampden. In 1640, he was made Chief Justice of the Common Pleas. In 1641, when the previous keeper, John Finch, fled into exile, Littleton was appointed Lord Keeper of the Great Seal. He was raised to the Peerage as Baron Lyttelton of Munslow. As the Lord Keeper Littleton had begun to display a certain amount of indifference to the royal cause. In January 1642, he refused to put the Great Seal to the proclamation for the arrest of five members and he also incurred the displeasure of Charles by voting for the Militia ordinance. However, he assured his friend Edward Hyde, afterwards Earl of Clarendon, that he had only taken this step to allay the suspicions of the parliamentary party who contemplated depriving him of the seal, and he undertook to send this to the King. He fulfilled his promise, and in May 1642, he himself joined Charles at York, but it was some time before he regained the favour of the king and the custody of the seal. Littleton died at Oxford on 27 August 1645; he left no sons and his barony became extinct. His only daughter, Anne, married her cousin, Sir Thomas Littleton, 2nd Baronet. Their son, Sir Thomas Littleton (c. 16471710), was Speaker of the House of Commons from 1698 to 1700, and Treasurer of the Navy from 1700 to 1710. (Wikipedia). …
