Soft cover. Condición: New. Based on an animation film, the book explores the possible origin of zero' as used in mathematical calculations. The story is a fictional take on actual research done on the subject. A merchant living in Takshashila (north-western India) finds he has to do calculations all the time. But without zero',… it is a complicated process indeed. One night, he falls asleep on his papers. When he wakes up, sunlight is streaming in through the latticed window, throwing circular beams of light on his calculations. An idea is sparked off. Eureka! The people of the time trade, trade routes, architecture, dress styles, dyes used, and so on were also researched for authenticity in the film, which carries into the illustrations. The earthy colours and textures provide a vivid complement to the text. Bhojpatra (birchbark), used for manuscripts those days, has been used as a backdrop for an old-world feel. Nina Sabnani (ilustrador).

Soft cover. Condición: New. When he takes his sheep and goats to graze in the mountains, Gulla is always careful of bears and leopards, the terrible Banbudhiya, and also of the men with guns. But one day he sees a little hangul being chased by wild dogs and he forgets to be careful. In rushing to save the deer, Gulla goes deeper… and deeper into the forest. This story from Kashmir, where the hangul is a protected animal, carries the many shades and tones of the region the quiet life of the villagers in the valley, their close link with nature, as well as the underlying disquiet that they learn to live with. This rugged, rocky and less familiar part of the beautiful state is evoked by the illustrations with a soft charm. Proiti Roy (ilustrador).

Soft cover. Condición: New. Kali hates school. And school hates him, he thinks, for he has no friends. The children there find him strange. He wishes his father were an ¿ordinary' bus-conductor or postman instead of a snake-catcher, even if one of the most celebrated in the Irula tribe. He worries that others will see him eating… fried termites (his favourite snack!) and laugh. And then one day, a large rat snake creates havoc in the classroom . . . and Kali becomes a hero! A simple, sensitive story crafted by a writer deeply involved with environmental issues. Zai Whitaker works closely with the Irulas, and her empathy with them is evident in this book. The watercolour illustrations are evocative and detailed, suffusing the story with many hues of mood. Srividya Natarajan (ilustrador).

Soft cover. Condición: New. Aditis grandmother is unwell, and there is a certain rose that may make her feel better. Does this Deep Rose really exist? No one is sure, but the quest for it takes the adventurers to the coast of Devon in England. There they meet the little boy Grendel, who lives under the sea, prowls around at nigh…t scaring others, who cant remember anything and doesnt really care. In the sixth book of this unique series, Suniti Namjoshi gently raises the bar for her young readers. In typical style, she recasts characters from legends and questions popular notions about them here, the monsters Grendel and his mother from the Beowulf story. Does monstrosity lie in the eye of the beholder, she wonders. Add to this Monkeyji in a profound mood, and there is even more to think about. Shefalee Jain (ilustrador).
