Hardcover. Condición: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Ex-library with the usual library markings (if not for the library markings this copy would be graded in fine condition); overall a nice used copy! Full-color illustrated boards with black and red lettering. 213 historical and informative pages! "Titles in the Listener's Companion Series provide readers with a deeper understanding of key musical genres and the work of major artists and composers. Aimed at nonspecialists, each volume clearly explains how to listen to works from particular artists, composers, and genres. Examining both the context in which the music appeared and its form, authors provide the environments in which key musical works were written and performed—from a 1950s bebop concert at the Village Vanguard to a performance of Handel's Messiah in eighteenth-century Dublin. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) remains as popular today as ever. His recordings fill iTunes playlists, and annual Mozart festivals are performed worldwide. His eminence as a musician has supported overseas guided tours, served as the subject of a cartoon series (Little Amadeus: twenty-nine episodes from 2006 to 2008), inspired movies and documentaries, and launched a French rock opera. In Experiencing Mozart: A Listener's Companion, music historian David Schroeder illustrates how the issues Mozart cared about so deeply remain important to modern listeners. His views on politics, women, authority, and religion are provided, along with compelling analysis of selected great symphonies and sonatas, moving concertos and innovative keyboard works, and groundbreaking operas. Schroeder merges his vast knowledge of the great artist's personal and professional life, late eighteenth-century European culture and society, and remarkable musicianship to guide listeners in the art of listening to Mozart. This work is an ideal introduction to readers and listeners at any level.". …

Hardcover. Condición: Good. No Jacket. Revised Edition. Ex-library with the usual library markings (if not for the library markings this copy would be graded in fine condition); no dj; overall a nice used copy! Blue and red illustrated boards with red and black lettering. 689 educational and informative pages! "The Concise Encyclopedia of the Great Recession 2007-2012 brings to the present the necessary information for understanding the first major recession of the 21st century and one of the deepest since the Great Depression itself. Its description of recession-related actors and events since its start provides an in-depth understanding of this major rupture in modern economy, forever changing, some have argued, not only the distribution of income in the United States but the balance of economic power across the globe. Acclaimed by The New York Times as the "leading business and technical lexicographer in the nation" and serving as business terminology consultant to the Oxford English Dictionary for a quarter century, Jerry M. Rosenberg provides the most accurate and current explanation of this economic catastrophe of the last five years. Rosenberg describes and updates the events, actors, institutions, rules, regulations, and current impact of this global financial crisis that pushed banks, financial institutions, and corporations across the world to the edge. With entries on key individuals, companies, government programs, financial instruments, and institutions, Rosenberg provides an essential reference to the most critical recession the United States has faced since the Great Depression of the 1930s. This work is an ideal tool for scholars and students seeking more information on this major event in world history.".…

Soft cover. Condición: Good. 1st Edition. Minor edge and corner wear; lightly scuffed and scratched; spine is gently creased; some light shelf wear; ex-library with the usual library markings; overall a nice used copy! Full-color pictorial white wrapper with black and blue lettering. 187 historical and informative pages! "Many of Stanley Kubrick's films are often interpreted as cold and ambiguous. Whether viewing Barry Lyndon, 2001, The Shining, or Eyes Wide Shut, there is a sense in which these films resist their own audiences, creating a distance from them. Though many note the coldness of Kubrick's films, a smaller number attempt to explore exactly how his body of work elicits this particular reaction. Fewer still attempt to articulate what it might mean to "feel" Stanley Kubrick's films. In The Kubrick Facade, Jason Sperb examines the narrative ambiguity of the director's films? from the voice-over narration in early works, including the once forgotten Fear and Desire? to the blank faces of characters in his later ones. In doing so, Sperb shows how both devices struggle in vain to make sense of the chaos and sterility of the cinematic surface. All thirteen of Stanley Kubrick's feature-length films are discussed in chronological order, from the little-seen and long-neglected Fear and Desire to the posthumous release of Eyes Wide Shut. Sperb also discusses Kubrick's importance to Steven Spielberg's AI. While exploring all of Kubrick's films, the author concentrates in particular on The Killing, Dr. Strangelove, 2001, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, and Eyes Wide Shut. This is also the first book-length study that focuses considerable attention on Fear and Desire and its relevance to Kubrick's larger body of work. In this respect, The Kubrick Facade is one of the first truly comprehensive books on narrative in the maverick director's films. It is also the first book to integrate a discussion of AI, and the first to fully explore the importance of the consistent visual emphasis on blank, silent faces in his post-Lolita films.".…
