Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Born in 1887, in what is now Belarus, Marc Chagall is one of the best-known artists of the twentieth century. His combination of wistful, fantastical scenes and vibrant palette have ensured his enduring popularity, but he is also considered an important pioneer of modern art whose sense of colour was rivalled only by that of Matisse. Time spent studying in Russia and Paris developed what would embody Chagall's style for his entire career, drawing inspiration from his Jewish identity, folklore, nostalgia and religion. This, together with the influence of the fauvist, cubist and symbolist movements he experienced in Paris, created his distinct style that was accessible, but at the same time remote and other-worldly. After leaving occupied France for the United States in 1941, Chagall was commissioned to create stage sets for a new ballet at the New York Ballet Theatre, and given a large solo show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1946. On returning to Europe in 1948, he continued to create in almost every medium possible, adding his distinctive touch to ceiling paintings, stained glass, murals, tapestries, costumes, ceramics and sculpture, until his death in 1985. In keeping with previous books in our successful series, Tate; Introductions: Chagall provides a lucid overview of this familiar, yet mysterious, artist. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Cezanne is often called the first modern painter. But how did he arrive at his way of seeing the world, and what was he aiming to express in his art? Critics, art historians and biographers have all devised theories that attempt to explain the style and content of Cezanne's paintings. Yet Cezanne himself was wary of others misinterpreting his work according to their own agendas. So is there a right way of seeing Cezanne? This text sets out to answer this question. The author explores Cezanne's paintings and analyzes the artist's own comments about art. The landscape of his native Provence, the work of Old Masters, modern art and literature - all influenced Cezanne during his search for a style. However, it was Impressionism that caused him to rethink his ideas about what he was trying to express: the "sensation" in nature. This publication looks at Cezanne's own theories about colour and perception, explains how he built up the painting, and how he was able to express touch in a visual form. It also discusses Cezanne's lasting influence on 20th-century art. With insights into Cezanne's approaches to painting and his techniques, this work should be useful reading for those wishing to understand more about the work of this artist. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Judged by the standards of his own time, the career of John Everett Millais (1829-96) was an unqualified success. Beginning as a child prodigy, he entered the Royal Academy Schools aged 11, and along with Holman Hunt and Rossetti was a founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. The first Pre-Raphaelite picture he produced, The Carpenter's Shop, had a dramatic effect on the critics; Charles Dickens described his portrayal of the child Christ as a 'hideous, wry-necked, blubbering, red-haired boy in a night-gown.' Millais later became the quintessential English gentleman artist, a Baronet and president of the Royal Academy, producing some of the most famous images of the age. At the time of his death, however, there were some who believed that Millais had betrayed his extraordinary talent and vision by pandering to popular taste for the false rewards of money, status and Victorian respectability. In more recent times, Millais's career, after the disbanding of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, has been presented largely as an anti-climax. Yet it is these imbalances and diverse viewpoints that make a study of Millais so compelling. Author Christine Riding analyses his artistic career, his critics and his audience, exploring the broader issues which preoccupied Victorian Britain on the subject of art itself. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Apart from a few exceptions, no one can say with absolute certainty where people go when they disappear. Do we go to the same place that lost socks go to? Or do we perhaps evaporate into the heavens in the same way that puddles do? Taking advantage of the lack of definitive answers, this beautifully illustrated book launches new hypotheses, from the serious to the nonsensical, by drawing on the world around us for ideas. Tackling a serious theme in a philosophical and poetic way, Where Do We Go When We Disappear? concludes that 'Nothing is too empty a place to be in. And if we all go there, it will cease to be nothing in no time'. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. 1932 was an extraordinary year for Picasso, even by his own standards. His paintings reached a new level of sensuality and he cemented his status as the most influential artist of the time. Over the course of this year he created some of his best-loved works, from colour-saturated portraits to surrealist drawings, developing ideas from the voluptuous sculptures he had made at his newly acquired country estate. In his personal life, throughout 1932, Picasso kept a delicate balance between tending to his wife Olga Khokhlova and their son Paulo, and his passionate love affair with Marie-Therese Walter, twenty-eight years his junior. This publication will bring these complex artistic and personal dynamics to life. It was also a year of invention and reflection. Having recently turned fifty, Picasso embarked on the first volume of what remains the most ambitious catalogue of an artist's work ever made. Meanwhile, the first ever retrospective of his work was staged, a show that featured new paintings alongside earlier works in a range of different styles. Picasso's journeys between his homes in Boisgeloup and Paris capture the contradictions of his existence at this pivotal moment: a life divided between countryside retreat and urban bustle, established wife and recent lover, painting and sculpture, sensuality and darkness. The year ended traumatically when Marie-Therese fell seriously ill after swimming, losing most of her iconic blond hair. In his final works of the year, Picasso transformed the event into scenes of rescue and rape, a dramatic finale to a year of love, fame and tragedy that pushed Picasso to the height of his creative powers. This lavishly illustrated publication will explore the major themes and concerns of 1932, in essays, artworks and archive photographs. It will strip away common myths to reveal the man and the artist in his full complexity and richness. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. The Mondrian collection in the Gemeentenmuseum is particularly strong on the early works, when the artist painted in the style of the Hague school. Mondrian's style changed dramatically in his forties, after his encounter between 1908 and 1911 with van Gogh, Pointillism and then Cubism. A central feature in the exhibition and catalogue will be the group of drawings and paintings of trees. These show the impact of Cubism on Mondrian's work after 1911 and exemplify the transition from naturalism to a more abstract depiction based on a linear scaffold of arcs and straight lines. A group of later works made during an entirely abstract style based on planes of primary colours and linear grids. By the early 1920s all naturalistic references are removed. This new abstract reality, based on Mondrian's writings on "neo-plasticism", was refined throughout the 1920s and 1930s. The final images in the exhibition coincide with the artist's departure from Europe to America. This exhibition catalogue opens with essays from the selectors of the exhibition, the artist Bridget Riley, Sean Rainbird of the Tate Gallery and Hans Janssen from the Gemeentemuseum. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. …

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. For well over a hundred years certain artists have blurred the distinction between 'art' and 'design', creating works for which Alex Coles has coined the term 'DesignArt'. In a pioneering study of this dynamic area of art-making, he traces its course from the early twentieth century to the present day, when such works have become a dominant feature of the contemporary art scene and are pervasive in key international exhibitions and biennials. From Matisse's plush interior for Rockefeller's town house to the playful contemporary environments created by Jorge Pardo; from the paintings of Bridget Riley appropriated by the fashion world in the 1960s to the fabric designs Takashi Murakami recently conceived with Marc Jacobs, Alex Coles has identified a major and previously uncharted strand in art history. DesignArt is the first critical account of its diverse histories, polemics and practices. Written in a clear and accessible style and fully illustrated throughout in colour, DesignArt is indispensable for all those with an interest in modern art and design and the relationship between the two.
