Text block sound; leather distressed and worn with spine perishing and boards tenuously attached at joints. Text block trimmed with margins a bit tight. An instance of horizontal worming to the first 25 or so leaves with here and there some loss of letters but with no meaning lost. Small burnhole pg 485. With extra engraved title page. Title page a little soiled with prior ownership in dim manuscript to several early leaves. Would benefit from a rebacking restoration. Good only thus.

A Dictionarie of English and Latin IDIOMES wherein PHRASES of the English and Latine Tongue Answering in Parallels . . Schoolmaster Walker offered this book as a means to cure the barbarisms of translations from English to Latin committed by students. After some examples, Walker observed, "If your spleen be not ready to crack I could furnish you with more such as these be . as finding them matter of almost every days tormenting observation." Most idioms are identified by its classical author, but others by moderns, such as Erasmus, Beza etc. Printed in blackface type. [ Wing W428; ESTC R34703]. With a copperplate frontispiece.

First edition of this translation, 8vo, pp. viii, xi (subscriber list), [2], 103, 103 (English and Scottish text parallel on facing pages), [1], 6, [2] errata; original blue paper-covered boards, cream paper shelfback, manuscript title on spine; small paper shelf label at the foot of the spine; lightly rubbed, spine a little darkened, else very good. With the contemporary ownership signature of "Tweeddale" on title page - Marquis of Tweedale appears in the subscriber list. Ramsay (1686-1758), not to be confused with the portrait artist of the same name - his son - was by turns a wig-maker, poet, bookseller, publisher, editor, and playwright. He was an vocal promoter of Scots poetry and poets. His own chief composition was The Gentle Sheperd, first printed in 1725, a work that attained great popularity but went for many years without being translated into English. In her preface, Margaret Turner makes clear "it is a great disadvantage to this beautiful poem that it is written in the old rustic dialect of Scotland, which, in a short time, will probably be entirely obsolete, and not intelligible." Lowndes indicates that there were two English versions that preceded this one, one by Cornelius Vanderstop in 1777, and one by W. Ward in 1785. Given the fact that "Tweeddale" appears on the title page, the fact that John, Charles, and James Hay are listed among the book's subscribers, and the fact that members of the Hay family had for many years been marquises of Tweedale, there is a very strong likelihood that this is a subscriber's copy.

Folio, (viii, 656), 34 pp. Fly leaf with a contemporary inscription and a neat repair to the top edge, some marks and browning, armorial bookplate to title verso. Contemporary panelled calf, corners worn and repaired, rebacked with a maroon label. Originally published as "A Worlde of Wordes" in 1598 and revised as "Queen Anna's New World of Words" in 1611, Florio is ranked third by one study, behind Shakespeare and Chaucer, in the amount of words contributed to English.
