The chalk of Castle Hill has been shaped and reshaped over the centuries into massive earthworks, ditches and mounds. Imposing walls and towers have been raised and networks of tunnels built beneath them. Henry II began the building of the present castle in the 1180s, and over the next 800 years its buildings and defences were adapted to meet the changing demands of weapons and warfare. This guidebook, packed with historic images, reconstructions and plans, provides a full tour of this iconic castle and relates its long and eventful history. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Glowering over the city, Carlisle Castle is built on the site of a Roman fort at a crucial location where roads to Scotland and across northern England meet. A military base for some 900 years, it was the last castle to be besieged in England, when the Duke of Cumberland overwhelmed Bonnie Prince Charlie's Jacobite garrison there. This new guidebook contains a beautifully illustrated tour and history, complete with colour photographs, plans, reconstruction drawings and eyewitness accounts. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: Very Good. Framlingham is a magnificent late-12th-century castle, its striking outline reflected in the nearby meer. The castle was built by Roger Bigod, Earl of Norfolk, and was home to the earls and dukes of Norfolk for over 400 years. The castle was briefly owned by Mary Tudor, and she used it as the rallying point for her supporters in the turbulent days after the death of Edward VI. In the mid-17th century, a poorhouse was built within the walls of the castle. This guidebook includes a tour and history of the castle and its inhabitants, illustrated with new drawings, photographs, plans and historical imagery. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: Very Good. Grime's Graves were the first Neolithic flint mines to be recognized as such in England. The shallow depressions - over 400 in all - that create such a mysterious, lunar-like landscape, represent the infilled shafts and pits of these mines, which were dug about 5,000 years ago. Here, prehistoric miners extracted the fine quality, jet-black flint from which they fashioned tools, weapons and ceremonial objects. This guidebook provides a tour of Grime's Graves and explains the history of this extraordinary site from the Neolithic Age to the present day. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: Very Good. Today, visitors experience Stonehenge as a wonder of ancient achievement and an enduring symbol of mystery. But Stonehenge was built as a temple - a place of ceremony, of burial and of celebration. The first Stonehenge was simple - just a circular ditch and bank, perhaps with a few small upright timber posts or stones - and was constructed about 5,000 years ago, in the period of prehistory known as the Neolithic or New Stone Age. By about 2500 BC more and much larger stones had been brought to the site, huge sarsen stones from north Wiltshire and smaller bluestones from west Wales. This marked the beginning of over 800 years of construction and alteration stretching into the period known as the Bronze Age, when the first metal tools and weapons were made. By this time Stonehenge was the greatest temple in Britain, its banks, ditches and standing stones arranged in sophisticated alignments to mark the passage of the sun and the changing seasons. But Stonehenge was just one part of a remarkable ancient landscape. Hundreds of burial mounds clustered on the surrounding hilltops, while smaller temples and other ceremonial sites were built nearby. Stonehenge and these other ancient structures form an archaeological landscape so rich that it is classified as a World Heritage Site. Stonehenge has inspired people to study and interpret it for centuries. Medieval writers suggested magic as an explanation of how it was created; early antiquarians, like William Stukeley in the early 18th century, guessed - wrongly- that the Druids had built it. Archaeology still provides the best hope of answering some of these fundamental questions about Stonehenge: how and when it was built, who built it and, perhaps most difficult of all, why it was built, But even with the evidence that archaeology and modern science provide, not all these questions can be answered. Stonehenge will always keep some of its secrets. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: Very Good. 'I had neither chimney nor firehearth. This being to the seaside and much open, the wind drove the rain in forcibly, so that the water came up over my bed.' George Fox, imprisoned at Scarborough, 1666. Scarborough Castle stands on a massive promontory of rock that rises above the North Sea. The site has been intermittently inhabited and fortified for nearly 3,000 years. With its own anchorage, now the harbour, Scarborough has long been an important gateway to north-east England. In the fourth century the Romans built a fortified signal station here, one of a coastal chain that watched for seaborne raiders. A castle was first established here by William le Gros, Earl of York in the mid 12th century. In 1155 he was forced to surrender it to Henry II, who built the great tower and began developing a town beneath the castle walls. Scarborough Castle featured prominently in national events throughtout the Middle Ages and Tudor period and was besieged on several occasions. The castle was briefly abandoned in the early 17th century, but was reoccupied during the Civil War and twice besieged by Parliamentarian forces. Subsequently the castle was garrisoned and it remained occupied by the army until the late 19th century. The town, meanwhile, prospered from the 1660s as a spa and seaside resort. In 1914 the castle and the town were shelled by German warships. The castle became a popular visitor attraction and was taken into State guardianship in 1920. This beautifully illustrated English Heritage guidebook to Scarborough Castle gives a full tour and history of the remains of this important medieval castle. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: Very Good. From the 14th to the 16th centuries, Eltham was an important royal palace - a favoured residence where successive monarchs spent Christmas and hunted in the surrounding parks. Edward IV built the magnificent great hall, with its soaring hammerbeam roof and bay windows. In 1933 the site was leased to Stephen Courtauld, who constructed a modern house incorporating the great hall. The house was lavishly decorated in a variety of styles, reflecting the influence of Art Deco and contemporary ocean liners, as well as incorporating historical and classical motifs. This guide does full justice to the medieval remains, the remarkable Courtauld interiors and the delightful gardens, also laid out in the 1930s, and sheds light on the Courtaulds' glamorous, if brief, occupation of Eltham. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: Very Good. Just four kilometres south of the Scottish border, Berwick-upon-Tweed is one of the finest surviving fortified towns in Britain. Standing at the mouth of the River Tweed it guarded the river crossing of the main route from London to Edinburgh, its defences kept in readiness for war from medieval times until the 19th century. Repeatedly besieged, raided and surrendered in 300 years of violent dispute between the Scots and the English, it changed hands 13 times. The remains of its medieval castle high above the river, its massive Elizabethan walls and bastions and the 18th-century elegance of Ravensdowne Barracks still dominate and define the town. This new guide contains a full tour and history of the barracks and town's fortifications, with plans, maps and historical images. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
