Hard Back. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: As New. Second Printing. 202 Pages Indexed. No defects noted to this very tight near flawless interior text pages. During the 1890s and past the turn of the century, the land of the Five Civilized Tribes, roughly the eastern half of present Oklahoma, known as Indian Territory, was a society ravaged by murder, rape, robbery, whiskey peddling and stock thievery. Into this scene came James Franklin Ledbetter as a deputy United States marshal, wielding a Colt's revolver and a Winchester rifle. Ledbetter was a former deputy sheriff in Johnson County, Arkansas, where he was known to thieves and killers as one of The Invincibles. He also served as a city marshal, chief of police and sheriff, before and after Oklahoma statehood, when his tenure as a deputy U.S. marshal expired. In private life he was gentle, courteous and unassuming, and in the autumn of his life, became affectionately known as Uncle Bud. But the media touted him as a territory terror, scourge of criminals, and pioneer G-man of the West. Ledbetter was all these things and more. Though he never bothered to confirm or deny many of the exploits credited to him, the documented events of his career parallel those of Bill Tilghman, Heck Thomas and Chris Madsen, the triumvirate of man-hunters famed as the Three Guardsmen of the Oklahoma frontier. This book is the only biography of Uncle Bud, one of the Old West's long neglected lawmen who assumed the title of Fourth Guardsman of Oklahoma. Contents in 25 Chapters: Ax-Handle Justice, Deputy Sheriff of Johnson County, Indian Territory Hot Bed of Crime, A Murder Avenged, Train Robbery at Blackstone Switch, And the Aftermath, Two Lynchings Averted, Bringing in the Turners and the Greens, A New U.S. Marshal and a Rapist Named Brooks, Rampage of the Jennings Gang, The Trail Ends at Carr Creek, Hop-Ale Raid and A Brush Court Expedition, Discouraged and Disenchanted, City Marshal at Vinita, To His Friends as True as Steel, Suppressing the Blacks, Oil and Prohibition, Carry Nation Presents a Hatchet, Anticipation and Realization, Booze Oozes and a Remarkable Term of Court, A Little Fretted, 10,455 prisoners, Police Chief To Be or Not to Be, Sheriff of Muskogee County and Movie-Making, and 100 Battles and Never Scratched.…
