If Grenville Davey's works were to be placed in any other architectural or social context than an exhibition space, they might be taken for existing functional objects. Are they part of industrial installations, gigantic machines or sewage systems? Are they objects we might already have seen some where, in the street, in a factory or in an abandoned circus? For a moment they seem as elements which form part of a system, which belong elsewhere: things which have purpose or function even if they are not immediately clear to us. Not only are Davey's works evocative of 'another place' but, also distinctly, of'another time'. Through their well-engineered look and robust construction, a comparison with pre-war industrial artifacts comes readily to mind. All the same, they are not 'found objects', but largely handmade (although sometimes assembled incorporating industrial parts). The objects are both figurative and abstracted. Even when they resemble lids, plugs, push-buttons, drums, bottle caps, switches, mirrors, railings or other mass-produced articles, the reference to a modern industrial environment is no more than an.…
