4to, 272 pp, paperback. Profusely illustrated in color. Still sealed in the publisher's original shrinkwrap. Robert Frank turned to filmmaking towards the end of the 1950s, interrupting his swift rise to fame after The Americans. This volume presents essays by Amy Taubin, Philip Brookman, Stefan Grisseman, Thomas Miessgang, Kent Jones, Michael Barchet, Pia Neuman and Bert Rebhandl, an interview with Allen Ginsberg, and new stills made from videotapes to Frank's specifications.,"I put my Leica in a cupboard. Enough of lying in wait, pursuing, sometimes catching the essence of the black and the white, the knowledge where God is. I make films. Now I speak to the people in my viewfinder." Robert Frank Robert Frank turned to filmmaking at the end of the 1950s. Although he has made 27 films, the work is largely a well kept secret. Frank approaches each film project as a new experience, challenging the medium and its possibilities at every turn. He has amalgamated documentary, fiction, and autobiography, cutting across genres. This book offers a visually unique approach to Frank's films: only new stills taken from videotapes have been used and they add up to a visual essay on Frank's cinema that establishes an engaging dialogue with his photographic work. Each film is introduced with detailed analysis, discussing the history and the aesthetics of Frank's film work. An interview with Allen Ginsberg provides an insider view. Together the texts and images offer an innovative and in-depth approach to the oeuvre of one of the greatest and most restless artists of the 20th century." - From the publisher.…

Softcover. Quarto. Softcover. Illustrated wraps. 296 pages (4 foldout) : illustrations, facsimiles, portraits (some color), photographs, 29 cm. This book presents the many facets of photographer Balthasar Burkhard (1944-2010), showing his self-invention as an artist and tracing the trajectory of the medium of photography in the later half of the twentieth century. Burkhard's work combines a sensitive understanding of the body as sculpture and the photographic image as a canvas, making him one of the pioneers in translating photography as a monumental tableau into contemporary art. This comprehensive book coalesces Burkhard's early role as a chronicler of the contemporary art of his time, especially as the main photographer for Swiss curator Harald Szeemann, his conceptual redefinition of photography together with other artists, and finally his emancipation as a photo artist. It accompanies a major retrospective organized by Museum Folkwang in Essen, Fotomuseum Winterthur and Fotostiftung Schweiz, the Museo d'arte della Svizzerra italiana in Lugano and the Balthasar Burkhard Estate in Bern. Exhibition: Museum Folkwang, Essen, Germany (20.10.2017- 14.01.2018) / Fotomuseum Winterthur und Fotostiftung Schweiz, Winterthur, Switzerland (11.02. - 21.04.2018) / Museo d'arte della Svizzera italiana, Lugano, Switzerland (09.06. - 02.09.2018). Additional shipping charges may be requested for international & priority orders. A large-format coffee-table book. Profusely illustrated. *** "This is the first publication on American artist Curtis Moffat who is known for his dynamic abstract photographs, innovative color still lifes and some of the most glamorous society portraits of the early twentieth century. Moffat was also a pivotal figure in Modernist interior design and furniture. Living in London throughout the 1920s and early '30s during the era of the 'Bright Young Things,' Moffat produced stylish photographic portraits of leading fi gures in high society, stage, theater and the arts, including Cecil Beaton, The Sitwells, Nancy Cunard, Lady Diana Cooper, Tallulah Bankhead and Daphne Du Maurier. In 2003 and 2007, Moffat's daughter, Penelope Smail, generously donated his extensive archive to the Victoria and Albert Museum. This book is drawn from that archive and also includes digital reconstructions of color images from original tri-carbro process black-and-white negatives. It reveals Moffat's pioneering yet little-known photography in all its depth and beauty." - Publisher. Size: 4to. Collectible.…

Hardcover. Condición: New. Estado de la sobrecubierta: New. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Blue paper-covered boards; with photographically illustrated dust jacket. Photographs by Lucinda Devlin. Essay (in German and English) by Michael Mackenzie. Includes a bio-bibliography. 112 pp., with 48 four-color plates. 11-1/4 x 10 inches. New in publisher's shrink wrap. From the publisher: "German spa facilities are sites at which one can apparently be cured of chronic illnesses. Whether they date from the 19th century, the post-war period, or today, these places are fast becoming leisure-time oases. In [this] series, Lucinda Devlin has photographed the deserted interiors of these bathhouses, framing clinically sterile rooms meant for massages, baths, examinations, and relaxation. These empty zones are silent testimonials to a healing industry that is thoughtfully tailored to people, even while its equipment subjugates them completely. Tellingly, they recall the rooms of Devlin's earlier series: the operating theaters, mortuaries, and autopsy rooms in Corporal Arenas and the U.S. execution chambers in The Omega Suites. With her coolly remote photographs, Devlin presents the relationships between people and institutions, and then shows how certain facilities depersonalize those relationships. Water Rites conveys an insightful view into the--typically German?--mentality and source of our institutionalized humanity.". …

Hardcover. Condición: As New. Estado de la sobrecubierta: None, As Issued. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 40 pages. Published in 2011. Retrospective collection of photographs, presented as an Artist Book, and as a singular photobook. One of the most beautiful books in the Steidl "Robert Frank Project". The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the Softcover Edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. An austerely elegant production by Robert Frank and Gerhard Steidl: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial cloth boards with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs and text by Robert Frank. Printed in tritone on pristine-white, thick uncoated stock paper by Steidl in Gottingen, Germany to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is exemplary in every respect. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Robert Frank's "Pangnirtung". Landscape photographs of a village of Inuit ("Eskimo") inhabitants in the Arctic Circle. There were roughly 1300 Inuit at the time Frank and his lifelong friend Reginald Rankin visited the remote village in August 1992. The place is un-inhabited today. Despite the widespread perception (as a result of "The Americans"), Robert Frank was never the street photographer-as-anthropologist. His subject is ultimately death, not life, and he is THE elegiac artist of desolation, loss, and "memento mori" par excellence. He did not photograph a single Inuit in Pangnirtung, who were already dying off although many were still alive when he visited, as if anticipating and commemorating - before it finally happened - their imminent extinction. In addition to anti-Ansel Adams images of the most majestic natural landscapes, Frank photographed the Christian cemetery where Western explorers and settlers are buried, presenting them as the collection's coda. There is, as it were, only grave beauty in every Robert Frank photograph. Robert Frank died on September 9, 2019 at the age of 94 as the greatest photographer of our time. An absolute "must-have" title for Robert Frank collectors. This title is a photobook classic. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Should NOT be confused with the Softcover Edition. A scarce copy thus. 27 tritone plates. Three of Robert Frank's books were selected as among the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". At the age of 92, Robert Frank was profiled in 2016 by The New York Times as "the greatest photographer of our time". A fine copy.
