Later Tama was a pioneer in the pursuit of Maori intellectual property, as an initiator of the Wai 262 claim. Tama had a high profile in HART - Halt All Racist Tours - and coined its name. He ran onto Athletic Park to disrupt the 1970 All Black trials, and during the 1981 Springbok tour was a marshal in the Molesworth Street confrontation with the police. As a filmmaker Tama Poata will always be remembered for his 1987 screenplay, Ngati, a landmark in Maori film. He acted in, directed and was involved in many other films, and promoted indigenous filmmaking in Aotearoa and overseas. Sir Jack Harris Bt inherited his baronetcy from his father, but would have earned a knighthood in his own right, given his impact as a pioneering manufacturer and civic leader in New Zealand. This readable and entertaining memoir begins with grandfather Wolf Harris setting up a business in New Zealand during the gold rush era. Sir Jack's eccentric mother was a suffragette who later became a member of the notorious Aleister Crowley's coven, designed Tarot cards and pursued Eastern mysticism. His father, a Liberal MP who went to school with Winston Churchill and did indeed know Lloyd George, represented the cockneys and pearly kings of Bethnal Green in the House of Commons. Jack, born in London and educated in Cambridge, set out in the Great Depression to rescue the family business in New Zealand, and under his helmsmanship his firm, Bing Harris, became our largest manufacturer. Like his outspoken wife Patricia, who also features in this book, Sir Jack never shied from public profile on matters of conscience. Born in South Dunedin in 1899, Phil Connolly worked as an engine fitter at the Hillside Railway Workshops until the outbreak of World War II. On departure for war he was described as 'one of the most prominent members of the Labour Party in Dunedin - a young man with a decided future'. Connolly commanded the minesweepers hms Deodar in the English Channel and hmnzs Moa on anti-submarine duties in the Atlantic and Pacific. In 1943 he was elected to Parliament and represented Dunedin West (later renamed Dunedin Central) for twenty years. He served a total of 27 years as a Dunedin city councillor and member of the Otago Harbour and Hospital boards. From 1957-60 Phil Connolly was Minister of Defence and Minister of Police. He was described as 'an eminent statesman and Minister of the Crown who devoted his life to the advancement of the people of New Zealand' and a man whose 'forthright honesty and unquestioned integrity, together with his wide experience of life, both in peace and war, had combined to make him an outstanding Minister'.
