Paperback. Condición: New. Classified features over 200 vintage classified ads from the 1970s American south. Both a time-capsule of a bygone era, and a fascinating study of ephemeral graphic design. Classified: Local Ads from America's Small Towns, features hundreds of classified advertisements from 1970s small-town America, collected and archived by Studio Carnley. Printed at 1:1 scale and isolated on the page, the collection is elevated to both a time-capsule of a bygone era, and a fascinating study of ephemeral graphic design from unknown illustrators, typesetters, printers, and graphic artists who all faced the same challenge: how to fit a lot of information in a small rectangle, and stand out on a page of other ads all trying to do the same. Classified is a celebration of small-town advertising, and the overlooked genius, ingenuity, and humor in the work that was created purely to sell, but which we can now study and learn from. In the end, designers today are still trying to fit a lot in a small rectangle - just one made from glass not paper.

Hardback. Condición: New. Parks 2-our third title with photographer Brian Kelley and the second volume in this series-is a new collection of over 300 United States national park maps, ephemera, and brochures spanning over 100 years. Part of an ongoing project, Kelley collects oft-overlooked objects within the Parks Service. The book showcases nearly a century of art, cartography, and printed materials in a compelling visual history of America's national parks and evolving graphic design styles culminating in Massimo Vignelli's iconic design system, the Unigrid.

Hardback. Condición: New. 'I'm for mechanical art', said Andy Warhol (1928-1987). 'When I took up silkscreening, it was to more fully exploit the preconceived image through commercial techniques of multiple reproduction.' Printmaking was a vital artistic practice for Andy Warhol. Prints figure prominently throughout his career from his earliest work as a commercial illustrator in the 1950s, to the collaborative silkscreens made in the Factory during the 1960s and the commissioned portfolios of his final years. In their fascination with popular culture and provocative subverting of the difference between original and copy, Warhol's prints are recognized now as a prescient forerunner of today's hypersophisticated, hyper-saturated and hyper-accelerated visual culture. Andy Warhol Prints, published to accompany a major exhibition at the Portland Art Museum - the largest of its kind ever to be presented - includes approximately 250 of Warhol's prints and ephemera from the collection of Jordan D. Schnitzer, including iconic silkscreen prints of Campbell's soup cans and Marilyn Monroe. Organized chronologically and by series, Andy Warhol Prints establishes the range of Warhol's innovative graphic production as it evolved over the course of four decades, with a particular focus on Warhol's use of different printmaking techniques, beginning with illustrated books and ending with screen printing.

Hardback. Condición: New. Communications between amateur radio (AKA ham radio) operators and citizen band stations have been crowding the world's electromagnetic spectrum since its invention in the early 20th century. Millions of operators formed what could be almost be described as an early internet - projecting their voices, ideas, and humanity around the earth's surface using various techniques and frequencies to bounce their waves around the earth's surface, off of the ionosphere, and even the moon. Any communication network needs a way of identifying individuals. A QSL card is a written confirmation of prior communication between two amateur radio or citizens band stations-postcard sized and mailed between users. Do You Confirm Receipt of My Transmission is derived from the Q code. A Q code message can stand for a statement or a question (when the code is followed by a question mark). In this case, 'QSL?' (note the question mark) means "Do you confirm receipt of my transmission?" while 'QSL' (without a question mark) means "I confirm receipt of your transmission." Just like today's internet avatars, operators had their own style and often projected their personality using their QSL cards. Collecting cards was popular, and a source of pride to operators. Published by Brooklyn-based design imprint, Standards Manual, Do You Confirm Receipt of My Transmission is a visual history of these cards, spanning from approximately 1960-1990. Over 190 cards are included, front and back, with high resolution details. The collection forms a visual history of early global communication - something we now take for granted but was once a marvel. Today, there are over 3 million licensed radio operators worldwide.
