The present volume grew out of the response to the demand fo…r an English translation of this book. In the meantime the literature on differential and integral in equalities increased greatly. We have tried to incorporate new results as far as possible. As a matter of fact, the Bibliography has been almost doubled in size. The most substantial additions are in the field of existence theory. In Chapter I we have included the basic theorems on Volterra integral equations in Banach space (covering the case of ordinary differential equations in Banach space). Corresponding theorems on differential inequalities have been added in Chapter II. This was done with a view to the new sections; dealing with the line method, in the chapter on parabolic differential equations. Section 35 contains an exposition of this method in connection with estimation and convergence. An existence theory for the general nonlinear parabolic equation in one space variable based on the line method is given in Section 36. This theory is considered by the author as one of the most significant recent applications of in equality methods. We should mention that an exposition of Krzyzanski's method for solving the Cauchy problem has also been added. At that time the influence of hormones on the progress of breast cancer was appreciated; the prescription of androgens and oestrogens in the treatment…of the advanced case was well established, and the operations of adrenalectomy and hypo physectomy had recently been introduced. Nevertheless, the prevailing view of the nature of breast cancer was that it was a local malignancy which had to be eradicated before it spread too widely and only if that had occurred would the aid of hormones be enlisted. How these hormones worked was unknown, indeed, today, as Mr. HAY WARD points out, their mode of action is still unknown. What has happened, however, within the last seventeen years has been a change of emphasis in our views regarding the essential nature of this disease. Instead of breast cancer being considered primarily as a local fault spreading centrifugally, it is realised with increasing con viction that it is a generalised disease with local manifestations and that one of the principal, if not the principal, aberration from normality lies in the endocrine environ ment. That this philosophy is demanding increasing acceptance is due in a significant measure to Mr. HAYWARD'S own investigations. In this work he has had the devoted assistance of BRIDGET WOLFF of the Breast Clinic at Guy's Hospital and the expert collaboration of Dr. R. D. He was a versatile, internationally renowned biochemist, gifted with bound less energy and a great breadth of view. After early work on respiratory enzymes, he developed a l…ifelong in te rest in complex carbohydrates and, particularly, glycoproteins. He early recognized the important role of the latter substances in membrane function and developed the now widely accepted model for the structure of major erythrocyte membrane glyco pro teins. He expanded this model to include the possible general roles of membrane glycoproteins in specific membrane functions, particularly cell recognition phenomena. Richard Winzler possessed a broad and critical perception of the ftux of biomedical progress. He thus appreciated very early that general recognition of the complexity of membrane-associated phenomena would foster a new, rapidly expanding, interdisciplinary membrane technology. He also recognized the need for means to bridge the communication barriers inevitably genera ted by such an evolution, and this conviction largely stimulated us to write this book. Membrane technology is a vast field and we cannot treat all its aspects. Instead, we concentrate on those areas that, in our view, have evolved most rapidly. In this, we pay primary but not exclusive attention to the plasma membrane, but where relevant, consider other biomem branes and diverse model systems. It is thus concerned with the demarcation proble…m. It examines exact science and its critique of inexact science. The role of fuzzy rationality in these examinations is presented. The driving force of the discussions is the nature of the information that connects the cognitive relational structure of the epistemological space to the ontological space for knowing. The knowing action is undertaken by decision-choice agents who must process information to derive exact-inexact or true-false conclusions. The information processing is done with a paradigm and laws of thought that constitute the input-output machine. The nature of the paradigm selected depends on the nature of the information structure that is taken as input of the thought processing. Generally, the information structure received from the ontological space is defective from the simple principles of acquaintances and the limitations of cognitive agents operating in the epistemological space. Thus the goal of the present volume is at the same time scientific and educational. The understanding of solid-solution equilibria of the various systems with respect to dissolution, precipitation and transformation of solids, their application to the evolution of brines, and a fast access to data is a necessary requirement for any modelling, especially in Geoscience. Another goal is to show the avail ability of data. Unfortunately, though solubility data are numereous there are substantial gaps, especially with respect to high temperatures. But also up to about 100 0 C data are missing for some of the systems so that they cannot be described entirely. Based on the present volume further work on the solubili ties of the minerals of marine evaporites may be promoted. The data have been viewed and collected over several years by the first author. The second author entered the preparation of the volume when it was realized that besides graphics and tables a fast access to data was required.
