Introduction In his biography 'Arrow in the Blue' the author Arthur Koestler suggests ironically that the fate of an individual may be predicted by examining the content of the newspapers at birth. Adenoviruses were discovered in 1953 (ROWE et al. , 1953; HILLEMAN and WERNER, 1954). At this time the Salk poliomyelitis vaccine was developed (SALK et al. , 1954) and in the same year the discovery of the double helical structure of DNA (WATSON and CRICK, 1953) and the plaque assay for one animal virus (DULBECCO and VOGT, 1953) was announced. Thus, this new group of viruses was born with great hopes for progress in molecular biology and for the control of animal virus infections. In the short interval be tween 1953 and 1956 the adenoviruses were discovered, methods for laboratory diagnosis and serotyping were established, the epidemiology was clarified and a highly effective vaccine was developed and approved (for a review see HILLE MAN, 1966). Succeeding years showed, however, that the vaccines were contami nated with the oncogenic SV 40 virus and that the adenoviruses themselves were tumorigenic. Since the discovery of adenoviruses animal virology was developed into a quantitative science offering explanation for viral functions at the molecular level. In this respect, e+e- physics may have been a bad choice. The field has so rapidly developed and dis coveries are chasing each other that much of the optimism of theory has passed over to e+e- experimentalists. A vast amount of experimental material arose from the simple reaction of e+e- annihilation. I, therefore, have to limit myself to recent results - most of them less than one year old. In applications to quantum field theory, renorm alized perturbation theory has long been the predominant calculational tool, and it has even tended to shape the entire conceptual outlook on such problems as well. How ever, the apparently irreconcilable conflict between strong interaction physics and perturbation theoretic calculations has given way in the past few years to some fairly revolut ionary (at least for field theory) modes of formulation and calculation. The fires of this revolution have been fed by exact solutions of special classical systems, [1] notably the sine-Gordon equation, and an appreciation of the relevance of classical solutions of nonlinear systems as starting points in quantum analyses [2]. The soliton solutions of the classical sine-Gordon equation exhibit extraordinary stability under scattering, but this feature is not essential for their utility in quantum studies. Consequently, broad studies have been made of nonlinear systems that exhibit localized, persistent solutions, which have also frequently been termed 'solitons' (or solitary waves, or kinks) as well [31. They have been recovered from man and lower animals and are ubiquitous in their geographic distribution. At present, the importance of these viruses as a cause of human or animal disease is still largely unknown. As a result of having a number of unusual characteristics, reoviruses have attracted the attention of many workers in the relatively short time since they were first recognized. For example, investigators interested in the molecular aspects of virology have been attracted by the unusual double-helical ribonucleic acid of high molecular weight which reoviruses possess, while those interested in epidemiology have been attracted by the occurrence of apparently identical viruses in both man and an unusually wide variety of lower animals. The degree of this interdependence is vividly evident in the plant-microbial world. Indeed, there is no axenic plant in nature and one finds various forms of interac tions between these two kingdoms ranging from completely innocuous to obligate parasitic. Most of these interactions are poorly understood at the molecular and physiological levels. Only those few cases for which a molecular picture is emerging are discussed in this volume. With the advent of recombinant DNA technology and the realization that some of these interactions are very beneficial to the host plant, a spate of activity to understand and manipulate these processes is occurring. Microbes interact with plants for nutrition. In spite of the large number of plant-microbe interactions, those microbes that cause harm to the plants (i. e. , cause disease) are very few. It is thus obvious that plants have evolved various defense mechanisms to deal with the microbial world. The mecha nisms for protection are highly diverse and poorly understood. Some pathogens have developed very sophisticated mechanisms to parasitize plants, an excellent example for this being crown gall caused by a soil bac terium, Agrobacterium tumefaciens. A remarkable ingenuity is exhibited by this bacterium to manipulate its host to provide nitrogenous compounds which only this bacterium can catabolize. Subsequent to their pioneering efforts, another surge of interest could be said to have centered about the efforts of the Chevalier Jacksons in the 1920's. After those bold steps, and for almost 40 years, research in laryngology and interest in laryngology continued, but at considerably and increasingly less intense levels, certainly so far as the otolaryngologist population was concerned. In the 1940's Julius Lempert sparked a renaissance in otologic research, deVelopment, and surgery, and exciting new frontiers opened in otology. In our own time, otology remains a large basic and fundamental segment of the otolaryngologic purview, but the flood of new discoveries which followed Lempert, like those which had followed the Jacksons in the 1920's in laryngology, appears to have diminished. When the authors of this publication made acquaintance in the late 1960's, there were approximately 10 centers in the United States for laryngologic research which could be truly designated as voice research facilities. The senior author was at that time instrumental in formulating the major criteria for laboratories to be so designated. In the early 1980's interest in laryngology has revived. In this unsatisfactory situation, Professor V. HEMLEBEN, Tiibingen, suggested another meeting to discuss actual problems and results concerning botanical chromosome research. Professor W. NAGL was willing to organize a symposium at the University of Kaiserslautern, and Professor F. EHRENDoRFER, Wien, contacted the Rpringer-Verlag, Vienna-New York, to explore the possibility of publishing the results of this symposium in the form of a supplement volume to the journal Plant Systematics and Evol7ttion. The conference took place on 13-15 October 1978 in the Department of Biology of the University of Kaiserslautern and was attended by 40 participants from 11 universities between Hamburg and Vienna. Emphasis of this Chromosome Symposium was given to three aspects, which do not attract major interest at large international congresses: 1. Discussion and Demonstration of technical details which cannot be found in published papers (so-called tricks). 2. Newton, after solving the two-body problem so brilliantly, tried his hand at the Sun-Earth-Moon system. Here he failed in two respects: neither was he able to compute the motion of the moon accurately, nor did he understand the reason for that. It took a long time to understand the fundamental importance of Newton's failure, and only Poincare realised what was the fundamental difficulty in Newtons programme. Nowadays, the term deterministic chaos is associated with this problem. The deep insights of Poincare were neglected by the founding fathers of Quantum Physics. Thus history was repeated by Bohr and his students. After quantising the hydrogen atom, they soon found that the textbook case of a three-body problem in atomic physics, the 3He-atom, did not yield to the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantisation methods. Only these days do people realise what precisely were the difficulties connected to this semi classical way of treating quantum systems. Our field, as we know it today, began in principle in the early 1950's, when Watson sketched the outlines of three-body scattering theory. Mathematical rigour was achieved by Faddeev and thereafter, at the beginning of the 1960's, the quantum three-body prob lem, at least as far as short-range forces were concerned, w&s tamed. Fistulae of pelvic organs, often monstrous defects, still are a major complication of child-birth causing misery to uncounted young women, and if they cannot find help in one of the very few hospitals with trained specialists, they became urological cripples losing everything: family, home and job. The magnitude of the problem is illustrated by some figures given by Reginald and Catherine Hamlin-about 700 fistula patients treated each year-a total of over 10,000 cases operated upon in their fistula hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethio pia. Most of these injuries could be prevented by better health care at the village level as some studies have shown conclusively. The incidence of fistula is an indicator of the standard of health and obstetrical care. The author of this book-Obstetric Fistula-is an internationally known Australian gynaecologist who for many years has been interested in all aspects of gynaecological urology, especially urinary stress inconti nence, other forms of involuntary loss of urine, and associated gynaeco logical conditions. Subsequent to their attachment to the chemoreceptor and by virtue of this binding they must possess the capacity to kill the parasite. Since the host which is to be cured of an invading parasite also contains a large number of chemoreceptors, that have the potential to bind toxic compounds, the task of the chemo therapist is to identify chemoreceptors of the parasite which are . not represented in the host and to design drugs which bind selectively to them~ In this context, Ehrlich called for 'the complete and exhaustive knowledge of all the different chemoreceptors of a certain parasite' as a 'sine qua non for success in chemotherapy'. Paradoxically and in spite of the fact that chemotherapy has become a very advanced and successful therapeutic discipline, few of its tri umphs have been achieved by following Ehrlich's original precepts. Introduction Of the ever increasing number of viruses known to affect man and higher animals, the virus of lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCM) was one of the first to be discovered. Indeed, this virus has been known and maintained in the laboratory by passages in a relatively simple host, the mouse, for 35 years. Yet our knowl edge of its properties is still scanty when compared with the wealth of informa tion available for other viruses, some of which have come to our attention much more recently. There are at least four reasons which may help to explain this seeming paradox. (1) The early belief that the LCM virus was the frequent cause of human diseases had soon to be abandoned; infections of man with this virus are rare. (2) By way of contrast, laboratory infections are not uncommon and they frequently run severe and even fatal courses. (3) Until recently, the only means of titrating the virus was by mouse inoculation, a method in which accuracy and economy are poorly correlated. (4) The virus is of unusual lability, being quickly inactivated under conditions which leave other viruses intact. Thus, when balancing medical and theoretical importance against personal hazard and tech nical difficulties, the result was quite unfavorable, and lack of interest was really not surprising. The emergence of new stereotactic methodologies such as frameless stereotaxy and other forms of neuronavigation have become an indispensable tool for all types of neurosurgical operations. This is a clear sign ofthe growing awareness of the long neglected fact that these neurosurgical treatments can be offered to large patient populations. Neurotransplantation as a novel treatment of Parkinson's disease has paved the way for the application of this technology for other indications. The pioneering work performed by the late Edward Hitchcock is reviewed here. There is a renewed interest in pallidotomy for dealing with certain forms of Parkinson's disease and certain aspects of this operation are discussed in another paper. Progress in the neurosurgical treatment of pain is dealt with by contributions on refined techniques of percutaneous cordotomy, DREZ operations and critical evaluations of spinal cord stimulation. A novel approach is a report on the experiences of treating cancer pain by intraspinal implantation of chromaffin cells.
