Thus were established the principles of European co operation which have been born from the European spirit, flourished in the European Association, and have throughout been associated with this series. The fact that the English language is well on the way to becoming the international medium at European scientific conferences is a great asset in terms of mutual understanding. Therefore we have decided to publish all contributions in English, regardless of the native language of the authors. All contributions are submitted to the entire editorial board before publi cation of any volume. Our series is not intended to compete with the publications of original scientific papers in other neurosurgical journals. Our intention is, rather, to present fields of neurosurgery and related areas in which important recent advances have been made. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The scientific work of Walther Birkmayer is grounded on his ability to turn what was often a mass of clinical details into the basis for a hypothesis for a new therapeutic approach toward solving the problems of a patient's illness.… Birkmayer first became known when, during the Second World War, he built up a clinic for brain injuries in Vienna, in which over 3000 patients were treated. The study of changes in the autonomic functions of the nervous system in these patients as well as the problems of rehabilitation were published in a monograph, 'Hirn verletzungen'. Consequently, this was his major scientific interest during the post-war years. His book, 'Klinik und Therapie der vegetativen Funktionsstorungen' published with W. Winkler, brought Birkmayer recognition in the German-speaking world. In 1954 he took over the Neurological Department of the Geriatric Hospital of Vienna in Lainz, where he remained until his retirement in 1975. International acclaim followed his breakthrough with the clinical application of L-DOPA in Parkinson's disease. Birkmayer, as a strong adherent to the scientific interpretation of neurological and psychiatric disease, has encouraged multidisciplinary research. This is reflected in his establishment of the former Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Neurochemistry, in which pharmacological, biochemical and histopathological research into neuropsychiatric diseases was performed under one roof. Further to his initial work on L-DOPA, Birkmayer has been in the forefront of supplementary parkinsonian therapy using enzyme inhibitors: benserazide in 1967, unselective monoamine oxidase inhibitors in 1962 and deprenyl in 1975. 252 pp. Englisch.

However, the tremendous speed in the development of the semiconductor industry demands numerical simulation tools that are efficient and provide reliable results. This makes the development of a simulation tool an interdisciplinary task in which physics, numerical algorithms, and device technology merge. For the sake of an efficient code there are trade-offs between the different influencing factors. The numerical performance of a program that is highly flexible in device types and the geometries it covers certainly cannot compare with a program that is optimized for one type of device only. Very often the device is sufficiently described by a two dimensional geometry. This is the case in a MOSFET, for example, if the gate length is small compared with the gate width. In these cases the geometry reduces to the specification of a two-dimensional device. Here again the simplest geometries, which are planar or at least rectangular surfaces, will give the most efficient numerical codes. The device engineer has to decide whether this reduced description of the real device is still suitable for his purposes. 288 pp. Englisch.

Components from the extracellular form can be collected in large quantity and purified for the preparation of molec ular probes. These probes can be used to dissect the sequence of events required for the establishment and expression of the integrated form. Furthermore the 2 genomes of retroviruses originated from normal cell genes, genes called virogenes - The nucleic acid and protein probes isolated from these viruses are therefore useful for studying the nature and expression of this normal cell gene and in elucidating the physiological role of its products. RNA tumor viruses perhaps offer us one of the most complete sets of biochemical reagents and biological responses for examining gene regulation in vertebrates and for studying the consequences of aberrant gene regulation on cell growth in tissue culture and in animals. Further more, there is an increasing conviction that virogenes play an important role in normal development and/or differentiation (RISSER, STOCKERT and OLD, 1978). The aim of the present monograph is to illuminate more subtle aspects featuring group theory for quantum mechanics, that is, the concept of dynamical symmetry. Dynamical symmetry groups complement the conventional groups: their elements induce transitions between states belonging to different representations of the symmetry group of the Hamiltonian. Dynamical symmetry appears as a hidden symmetry in the hydrogen atom and quantum rotator problem, but its main role is manifested in nano and meso systems. Such systems include atomic clusters, large molecules, quantum dots attached to metallic electrodes, etc. They are expected to be the building blocks of future quantum electronic devices and information transmitting algorithms. Auch mit unvollstandigen Stichproben wird sonst selten gearbeitet. So entstand der Wunsch nach einer zusammenfassenden Darstellung der wichtigsten Methoden fUr die statistische Zuverlassigkeitsanalyse und die Auswertung von Lebensdaueruntersuchungen. Diesem Wunsch versuche ich mit dem vorliegenden Buch zu entsprechen. Zuerst muBte ich aus der Vielzahl der Konzepte und Methoden jene auswahlen, die bereits angewandt werden oder sich dafUr eignen.
