They were teachers, colleagues and students, and the f…ollowing pages sketch their careers and our interactions. Also included are a few persons with whom I had little or no direct contact but whose ideas had a decisive influence on my work. To provide some coherence, the account is largely chronological and follows the steps of my own career. Taken together, these sketches provide a very personal picture of the dev- opment of statistical theory from the 1930s to the 1970s. It is the period between two revolutions: that of Fisher, Neyman, and Pearson, which laid the foundations for the classical statistical theory of that period; and the second revolution, forty years later, brought about by the advent of the computer, which turned statistics in new directions. The present account of this history is a highly selective one, which emphasizes the persons, institutions, and statistical topics that were close to my interests. One narrowing effect of this perspective stems from the fact that my career took place in the United States. As a consequence, the book focuses on American statisticians and institutions. Only the last two ch- ters discuss, briefly and very incompletely, developments in some other countries. 324 pp. Englisch.

Today, Latinas/os are the largest minority g…roup. They accounted for 12. 5% of the total U. S. population in the last decennial census; recent estimates sho wed the Hispanic population to be 41. 3 million as of July 1 1, 2004, or 14% of the nation's total population. However, this estimate does not include the 3. 9 million residents of Puerto Rico, who are also U. S. citizens and would raise the total to 2 45. 2 million. This would make the U. S. population of Latinos the second-largest Spanish-origin population in the hemisphere, after Mexico. The growth of this population since 1980 has been dramatic. Hispanics/Latinos grew more than seven times faster than the population of the nation as a whole, increasing by half, whereas the white (non-Hispanic) population increased by only 6% between 1980 and 1990 (U. S. Bureau of the Census, 1991, Table 1; U. S. Bureau of the Census, 1993, p. 2). In the 1990s, the Hispanic population increased 58%. Moreover, between 2003 and 2004, one of every two people added to 3 the nation's population was Hispanic/Latino. Consequently, not only are Latinos a substantial part of the U. A flurry of agents are under de velopment for targeting EGFR and in March 2006, the US Food and Drugs Administration approved cetuximab combined with radiation as a primary treatment option for patients with loco-regionally advanced HNSCC in whom chemoradiation therapy is deemed not to be an option. While blocking the EGF pathway during fractionated radiotherapy may seem an obvious strategy [5], the rationale for combining antiangiogenic and antivascular targeting agents with radiation may be less intuitive. However, recent research shows that there are several reasons why this could result in a therapeutic gain in practice. Chapter 8 is a review of this rapidly expanding field by Citrin and Camphausen. Targeted agents combined with radiation may offer new opportunities in the treatment of central nervous system malignancies, a tumor type where the outlook remains poor despite some recent progress [6]. For a long time, it had been known that sharing genes with someone affected with schizophrenia conferred a 50% chance of acq…uiring the disease. Although this is fifty times the incidence in the normal population, it was evident that genes could not explain all factors involved. At best, one could think of a combination of gene traits conferring predisposition for the disease. Now, it is evident that although there are no genes that individually confer a strong liability, several candidate gene alleles do confer some risk, and perhaps a combination of genes could cause the emergence of symptoms in this multi-faceted psychiatric condition. As the research on predisposing genes soars, it is becoming clear that we need to be able to identify cellular processes the genes control and to provide pat- physiological scenarios that could link those cellular phenomena with sy- toms. In this book, we have chosen to elaborate on that link. The contributions to this book have been requested to reflect the current state of the connection between schizophrenia genetics and pathophysiology. A cognitive radio (CR) transceiver is able to adapt to the dynamic radio environment and the network parameters to maximize the utilization of the limited radio resources while providing exibility in wireless access. The key features of a CR transceiver are awareness of the radio en- ronment (in terms of spectrum usage, power spectral density of transmitted/received signals, wireless protocol signaling) and intelligence. This intelligence is achieved through learning for adaptive tuning of system parameters such as transmit power, carrier frequency, and modulation strategy (at the physical layer), and higher-layer protocol parameters. Development of cognitive radio technology has to deal with technical and pr- tical considerations (which are highly multidisciplinary) as well as regulatory - quirements. There is an increasing interest on this technology among the researchers in both academia and industry and the spectrum policy makers. At best, one could think of a combination of gene traits conferring predisposition for the disease. Now, it is evident that although there are no genes that individually confer a strong liability, several candidate gene alleles do confer some risk, and perhaps a combination of genes could cause the emergence of symptoms in this multi-faceted psychiatric condition. As the research on predisposing genes soars, it is becoming clear that we need to be able to identify cellular processes the genes control and to provide pat- physiological scenarios that could link those cellular phenomena with sy- toms. In this book, we have chosen to elaborate on that link. The contributions to this book have been requested to reflect the current state of the connection between schizophrenia genetics and pathophysiology.
