A new family of materials was discovered that became superconducting above the temperature at which nitrogen gas liquifies, namely, 77 K or -196°C. Within months of the dis…covery, a wide variety of experimental techniques were brought to bear in order to measure the properties of these materials and to gain an understanding of why they superconduct at such high temperatures. Among the techniques used were electromagnetic absorption in both the normal and the superconducting states. The measurements enabled the determination of a wide variety of properties, and in some instances led to the observation of new effects not seen by other measu- ments, such as the existence of weak-link microwave absorption at low dc magnetic fields. The number of different properties and the degree of detail that can be obtained from magnetic field- and temperature-dependent studies of electromagnetic abso- tion are not widely appreciated. For example, these measurements can provide information on the band gap, critical fields, the H-T irreversibility line, the amount of trapped flux, and even information about the symmetry of the wave function of the Cooper pairs. It is possible to use low dc magnetic field-induced absorption of microwaves with derivative detection to verify the presence of superconductivity in a matter of minutes, and the measurements are often more straightforward than others. For example, they do not require the physical contact with the sample that is necessary when using four-probe resistivity to detect superconductivity. 216 pp. Englisch.

Thus nephropathies are generally class…ified as acute or chronic renal failure, malignancies or immunological changes. The weaknesses in diagnosing nephropathies arises because of the effective role the kidney plays in maintaining homeostasis, despite the fact that it has been extensively damaged. The frequencies of some type of chemically-induced acute renal failure is well documented, but the causes of chronic renal failure, malignancy, and other nephropathies are far more difficult to associate with a chemical aetiology. Many of the new therapeutic agents have important beneficial effects, but they are found to have marked nephrotoxic effects. Thus there is a growing urgency to increase the stringency of chemical safety evaluation for their potential nephrotoxic effects. This is strongly countered by the increased financial pressure to identify potentially nephrotoxic chemicals earlier in their development and humanitarian considerations to more closely relate animal test to the clinical situation. However, while the chemical type of polymers can be determined relatively easily, the average molecular masses and molecular mass distributions are more difficult to measure. The molecular mass averages of a polymer are measured by specialized and complex techniques such as light scattering (for weight average) and osmometry (for number average). Thus, complete characterization of the molecular mass distribution of a polymer by such means requires separating the sample into many fractions which can then be examined individually. Since size exclusion chromatography was introduced as a rapid and straightforward technique for the characterization of polymer molecular mass distributions, there have been tremendous increases in development and applications, and it was felt appropriate to bring together into a single volume the information required by scientists from many disciplines who wish to use the technique. This book should be useful to existing users, those who are new to the technique, and those who may be familiar with the basic technique and now wish to extend their capabilities to more complex applications (or to consider the potential of a number of related techniques). However, with advanced mate rials being 'en…gineered' and used in critical structural components, a new for NDE has emerged. Whereas many traditional engineering materi challenge als fail due to the initiation and self-similar propagation of a crack, reinforced composite materials degrade and fail in a manner more analogously to the collapse of a structure. Consequently the NDE of such materials involves assessing the combined effect of the material's damaged condition rather than identifying and sizing single critical imperfection. In 1979 Alex Vary, seeking to address the challenge confronting the NDE of advanced fiber reinforced composite materials began work on a new method of materials characterization. Focusing on the problem of evaluating graphite fiber reinforcedl epoxy laminated plates; Vary used a piezoelectric transducer to excite a mechanical disturbance in a plate and, with a sensi tive piezoelectric transducer monitored the disturbance on the same surface of the plate. (Placing the transducers on the same surface was primarily for practical purpose but their displacement in the direction of anticipated service load was of fundamental significance!) To quantify this observation, he counted the number of excursions, of the resulting electrical signal, above a arbitrary voltage threshold; a procedure frequently used for acoustic emission signal analysis. 364 pp. Englisch.

Design examples for multi-standard 802.111a/b/g as well as for GSM/WCDMA are fully described and experimental results from 0.18 micron CMOS test chips have demonstrated the validity of the proposed design and optimization techniques. Equally important the work describes techniques for robust high volume production of RF radios in general and for integrated PLL/VCO design in particular including issues such as supply sensitivity, ground bounce and calibration mechanisms. The revised title of the present volume reflects a number of import…ant changes in content and emphasis, which have been made possible by the accelerating pace of research in this field. A third of the chapters did not appear in the predecessor volume, and over half of the remainder have new authors. Many advances relating to the functional aspects of nervous tissue glycoconjugates have resulted from the application of sensitive and specific immunocytochemical techniques to studies on their localiza tion and developmental changes. In the past ten years, the importance of various extracellular matrix macromolecules such as laminin, fibronectin, tenascin, and heparan sulfate proteoglycans has also become generally recognized, as has the role of specialized oligosaccharide structures in cell interactions and developmental processes. In certain cases, connecting links have been discovered between seemingly unrelated research areas, such as the finding that a number of nervous tissue glycoproteins with probable roles in cell interactions (e.g., Thy-I, NCAM, and the myelin-associated glycoprotein) all belong to the immunoglobulin superfamily.
