The laws permitting sterilization of the mentally re tarded~ and those proscribing consanguineous marriages are but two examples. Indeed as far back as the 5th-10t…h centuries, B.C.E., consanguineous unions were outlawed (Leviticus XVIII, 6). Case law has traditionally tended toward the conservative. It is reactive rather than directive, exerting its influence only after an individual or group has sustained injury and brought suit. In contrast, state legislatures have not been inhibited in enacting statutes. Many of their products can be characterized as hasty, unnecessary, ill-conceived, and based on the heart rather than the head. Moreover the lack of expert consultation sought has also been remarkable. One state legislature, for example, has advocated immunization for sickle cell anemia! Many others have enacted laws for the screening of inborn errors of metabolism, e.g., phenylketon uria, but have poorly defined the lines of responsibility to secure compliance. A spate of specific disease-related bills has emerged in the u.S. Congress, each seeking recognition and appropriations. Sickle cell anemia, hemophilia, Cooley's anemia and Tay-Sachs disease have been among the front-runners for support. Finally, in 1975, Congress has begun to examine an omnibus bill concerning all forms of genetic disease. Once he arrived, Barry was double-celled with a nineteen-year-old inmate who beat and anally raped him during his first night in the admission unit. Unfortu nately, its development for analog electronic circuits is still in its Stone Age. The engineer's intuition is still the most powerful tool used in the industry! There are two reasons for this. One is that there has been no pressing need from the industry. Analog circuits are usuaIly small in size. Sometimes, the engineer's experience and intuition are sufficient to fulfill the need. The other reason is that there are no breakthrough results from academic re search to provide the industry with critical ideas to develop tools. This is not because of a lack of effort. Both academic and industrial research groups have made major efforts to look into this problem. Unfortunately, the prob lem for analog circuits is fundamentally different from and much more diffi cult than its counterpart for digital circuits. These efforts have led to some important findings, but are still not at the point of being practicaIly useful. However, these situations are now changing. The most prominent spectroscopic techniques through the forties and fifties were infrared and ultraviolet spectroscopy. Nuclear magnetic resonance, electron spin resonance and MOssbauer spectroscopy started making sig nificant contributions to polymer chemistry in the early sixties. Still more recently fluorescence spectroscopy and laser Raman spectroscopy have become readily appli cable to polymers and are contributing significantly to the understanding of the relationship between polymer structure and properties. Determination of the distribution of monomer se quences by molecular size has become possible through combined gel permeation chromatography and spectroscopic analysis. Fragments of polymers from chemical break down or from pyrolysis are further fractionated and structurally analyzed. To do so we need to understand better the immune response to different viruses so that we may be able to maxi mize the protective response of new vaccines and minimize their potential immunopathologic effect. An exciting new discovery which is now being further developed is the possibility of being able to use some viruses (e.g. vaccinia, adenoviruses, etc.), as carriers for other antigens. This may open up the way for the production of vaccines that will be inexpensive and that will confer long lasting immunity after only one injection. Over 200 persons from eight countries attended the pr…ogram, which consisted of 24 oral presentations and 38 poster presentations. Forty-two of those presentations have been included in this volume. The conference was sponsored by the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute, located in Bethesda, Maryland. The effects of radiation on lipid synthesis and membrane damage are aptly summarized in the first five chapters. These chapters describe the effects of radiation on lipid peroxidation of model membranes, and the role of lipid composition in mammalian cell death and in bacterial radio- and thermosensitivity. In bacteria, lipid peroxidation is not essential for radiation-induced cell death. One of the key points of the conference was the paradoxical nature of the radiobiology of eicosanoids. On the one hand, eicosanoids are mediators of damage; on the other, they are radioprotective agents. It is clear from the literature and from the data presented at the conference that both of these properties may also be observed as a consequence of radiotherapy. Some studies indicate that nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may minimize or prevent certain radiation induced damage, but other studies show no positive effect. 436 pp. Englisch.

Twenty invited lectures and seminar-speakers and… 100 other participants attended this Institute. The contributions of most of the lecturers and seminar-speakers are contained in this volume. The revival of field theory in elementary particle physics that started about ten years ago has influenced all branches of elementary particle physics from fundamental research to pure phenomenology. The selection of field theoretical methods in part icle physics appropriate for the Institute is therefore the first task for the organizers. We decided to have constructive problems of gauge field theories and solvable models as two major areas to be covered during the Institute. If one considers the concepts and terminology currently used by pure field theorists, one notices that many of them were introduced and discussed first by pheno menologists in comparing quite elementary models directly with experimental data. For this reason, it seemed worthwhile to re serve considerable time to phenomenological field theory. The Institute was sponsored by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization whose funds made the Institute possible. It was co sponsored by the Bundes-Ministerium fur Forschung und Technologie in Bonn and the Landes-Ministerium fUr Kultus in Mainz. A total of fifty four talks were presented of which twenty one were invited. Atomistic simulations are now common in materials research. Such simulations are currently used to determine the structural and thermodynamic properties of crystalline solids, glasses and liquids. They are of particular importance in studies of crystal defects, interfaces and surfaces since their structures and behavior playa dominant role in most materials properties. This week-long meeting brought together 35 invited delegates from most countries of the NATO Alliance to discuss the impact which syst~ms analysis has had and is likely to have on urban affairs. The manuscript was submitted to the publisher in June of 1982. Although the goal of the ARI was to assess the impact of urban systems analysis as seen through the eyes of those closely involved in such work, the meeting also addressed opportunities for future research and development, and therefore in this book we have attempted to synthesize discussions at the meeting with this in mind.
