The topics covered in the book summarize the current state of the art in technical demography. However, my know…ledge and expertise with respect to technical demography are limited to the most fundamental and intermediate-level methods; hence, critical commentary on the contents of this volume is beyond my scope in this fore word. Since I have some understanding of the logic and substantive aspects of the methods rather than the complicated mathematics used in describing them, my comments will necessarily be restricted to the book's general or ganization and content. To date, most texts published on technical demography have been limited to traditional demographic methods: sources and limitations of data, life table construction and applications, standardization techniques, various methods for preparing population estimates and forecasts, etc. However, population specialists have in recent years been developing and successfully applying a variety of sophisticated techniques not covered in the more standard intro ductory texts. In addition, many traditional methods that are unique to the demographic discipline have been improved and extended. 244 pp. Englisch.

Its specific goal is the measurement of image velocity (or optical flow), the projection of 3-D object motion onto…the 2-D image plane. The formulation of the problem emphasizes the geometric and photometric properties of image formation, and the occurrence of multiple image velocities caused, for example, by specular reflections, shadows, or transparency. The method proposed for measuring image velocity is based on the phase behavior in the output of velocity-tuned filters. Extensive experimental work is used to show that phase can be a reliable source of pure image translation, small geometric deformation, smooth contrast variations, and multiple local velocities. Extensive theorectical analysis is used to explain the robustness of phase with respect to deviations from image translation, and to detect situations in which phase becomes unstable. The results indicate that optical flow may be extracted reliably for computing egomotion and structure from motion. The monograph also contains a review of other techniques and frequency analysis applied to image sequences, and it discusses the closely related topics of zero-crossing tracking, gradient-based methods, and the measurement of binocular disparity. The work is relevant to those studying machine vision and visual perception. 222 pp. Englisch.

His graduate thesis was on the elimination of radioactive species from aqueous solution by foam f…ractionation. He has, except for a few years of absence, been at the university ever since, and many students have contributed to his subsequent work on micelle formation and related phenomena. Nearly sixty papers have been published thus far. Recently, in search of a new orientation, he decided to assemble his findings and publish them in book form for review and critique. In addition, his use of the mass action model of micelle has received much criticism, especially since the introduction of the phase separation model. Many recent reports have postulated a role for Laplace pressure in micellization. Although such a hypothesis would provide an easy explanation for micelle formation, it neglects the fact that an interfacial tension exists between two macroscopic phases. The present book cautions against too ready an acceptance of the phase separation model of micelle formation. Most references cited in this book are studies introduced in small group meetings of colloid chemists, the participants at which included Professors M. Saito, M. Manabe, S. Kaneshina, S. Miyagishi, A. Yamauchi, H. Akisada, H. Matuo, M. Sakai, and Drs. O. Shibata, N. Nishikido, and Y. Murata, to whom the author wishes to express his gratitude for useful discussions. 266 pp. Englisch.

The need for this book results from the following considerations. The astonishing achievements in microelectronics are in large part connected…with successfully applying the relatively new technology of processing (changing the prop erties of) a material into a device whose component dimensions are submicron, called photolithography. In this method the device is imaged as a pattern on a metal film that has been deposited onto a transparent substrate and by means of a broad stream of light is transferred to a semiconductor wafer within which the physical structure of the devices and the integrated circuit connections are formed layer by layer. The smallest dimensions of the device components are limited by the diffraction of the light when the pattern is transferred and are approximately the same as the wavelength of the light. Photolithography by light having a wavelength of A ~ 0.4 flm has made it possible to serially produce integrated circuits having devices whose minimal size is 2-3 flm in the 4 pattern and having 10-105 transistors per circuit. 516 pp. Englisch.

The symposium brought together a large number of investigators from government, universities and pharmaceutical companies involved in the discovery and development of new anticancer agents. Exciting new leads were presented and the status of others presently under development was discussed. A number of major changes have occurred during the last decade in research on drug discovery of cytotoxic agents.
