In addi…tion, although there are a few excellent texts on drug metabolism in print, these tend to be earlier publications and hence do not take into account the many recent advances in this area. Our motivations for writing this book therefore arose from the clear need for a recent and cohesive introductory text on this subject, specifically designed to cater for the needs of undergraduate and postgraduate students. Much of the subject matter in this text is derived from various courses on drug metabolism given at the University of Surrey and the University of Glasgow to basic science students in pharmacology, biochemistry, nutrition and nursing studies, to pre-clinical medical students and to under graduate and post-graduate students in toxicology. Therefore, it is our inten tion that this text will serve as a primer in drug metabolism to a variety of students in the life sciences taking courses in this subject. The term 'drug metabolism' in its broadest sense may be considered as the absorption, distribution, biotransformation and excretion of drugs. The purpose of the meeting was to bring together scientists from vari ous countries working in the diverse areas of statistical sciences but showing great interest in the advances of research on linear inference taken in its broad sense. Thus, the conference programme included ses sions on Gauss-Markov models, robustness, variance components~ experi mental design, multiple comparisons, multivariate models, computational aspects and on some special topics. 38 papers were read within the vari ous sessions and 5 were presented as posters. At the end of the confer ence a lively general discussion session was held. The conference gathered more than ninety participants from 16 countries, representing both parts of Europe, North America and Asia. Judging from opinions expressed by many participants, the conference was quite suc cessful, well contributing to the dissemination of knowledge and the stimulation of research in different areas linked with statistical li near inference. These metrics have been em ployed in many contexts, in many applied statistical and scientific problems. Thi s monograph presents genera 1 methods for extendi ng these metri cs to partially ranked data. Here 'partially ranked data' refers, for instance, to the situation in which there are n distinct items, but each judge specifies only his first through k-th choices, where k n. More complex types of partially ranked data are also investigated. Group theory is an important tool for extending the metrics. Full rankings are identified with elements of the permutation group, whereas partial rankings are identified with points in a coset space of the permutation group. The problem thus becomes one of ex tending metrics on the permutation group to metrics on a coset space of the permutation group. To carry out the extens'ions, two novel methods -- the so-called Hausdorff and fixed vector methods -- are introduced and implemented, which exploit this group-theoretic structure.
