One study led to another, and questions by students and colleagues often spurred me to apply desire for control to new areas and new questions. At the same time, researchers around the globe began using the scale and sending me reprints of articles and copies of papers describing work they had done on desire for contro! In the past decade or so, I have talked or corresponded with dozens of students who have used the scale in their doctoral dissertation and master's thesis research. I have heard of or seen translations of the Desirability of Control Scale into German, Polish, Japanese, and French. There is also a children's version of the scale. To date, playback of sound signals has predominated, but playback of electric signals and even video playback of visual signals suggests that playback will become just as prevalent in studies of communication in other sensory modalities. This book is one of the outcomes of a workshop on playback held at Thombridge Hall in the Peak District National Park, England during August 1991. There were two reasons for organising the workshop. First, the considerable and lively debate in the literature about the design and analysis of playback experiments -the pseudoreplication debate -was in danger of generating more heat than light. A workshop forum seemed the obvious place to clarify and, if possible, resolve the debate. To date, playback of sound signals has predominated, but playback of electric signals and even video playback of visual signals suggests that playback will become just as prevalent in studies of communication in other sensory modalities. This book is one of the outcomes of a workshop on playback held at Thombridge Hall in the Peak District National Park, England during August 1991. There were two reasons for organising the workshop. First, the considerable and lively debate in the literature about the design and analysis of playback experiments -the pseudoreplication debate -was in danger of generating more heat than light. A workshop forum seemed the obvious place to clarify and, if possible, resolve the debate. The continuing bond bet…ween these two major conferences in the field of cryogenics is indicative of the extreme interdependence of their subject matter. The major purpose of the conference is sharing of the latest advances in low temperature materials science and technology. However, the many side benefits which accrue when this many experts gather, such as identification of new research areas, formation of new collaborations which often cross the boundaries of both scientific discipline and politics, and a chance for those new to the field to meet the old-timers, may override the stated purpose. This 1991 ICMC was chaired by F. R. Fickett of the National Institute of Standards and Technology. K. T. Hartwig, of Texas A&M served as Program Chairman with the assistance of eleven other Program Committee members. We especially appreciate the contributions of the CEC board and its Conference Chairman, J. Hendricks of Alabama Cryogenic Engineering, to the organization. of this joint conference. UAH hosted the conference. The local arrangements and management, under the watchful eye of Ann Yelle and Mary Beth Magathan of the UAH conference staff, were excellent.
