Neuware -The wide variety of hydraulic presses used for the manufacture of tubes, cable sheathing, rods, profiles, and wire in nonferrous metals has gone through an extraordinarily interesting development which commenced about 50 years ago after… the advent of high-tensile hot working steels and has since adapted itself to the steadily growing de mands of the metalworking industry. This development has especially been promoted in Germany where many of the old presses are still in use for the extrusion of rods and tubes in heavy metals, and lead, already decades ago, to the construction of hydraulic presses which rank among the largest equipment built for noncutting shaping of metals. This book, therefore, draws in the main upon the German deve lopment, giving an account of the advances made in extrusion technique and press design and presenting to the reader the sum of the experience gathered. A great number of very instructive works dealing with the techno logical aspects in the extrusion of metals and the results obtained in metallurgical investigations has been published. Since the first papers on this topic have appeared, notably those of BAER and ORE, a large body of liter…ature has grown up around this theory, and it is our aim to give a picture of the present state of this theory. To obtain a systematic treatment of the subject quite a few unpublished results of the author had to be included. On the other hand, it is natural that we could not reproduce every detail and had to treat some parts some wh at sketchily. We have tried to make this report as self-contained as possible. Accordingly we have given some proofs in considerable detail, though of course it is in the nature of such areport that many proofs have to be omitted or can only be given in outline. Systematic study of differentiable manifolds using these ideas was begun by Milnor [45] and Wallace [68] and developed extensively in the last…ten years. It is now possible to give a reasonably complete theory of simply-connected manifolds of dimension ~ 5 using this approach and that is what I will try to begin here. The emphasis has been placed on stating and proving the general results necessary to apply this method in various contexts. In Chapter II, these results are stated, and then applications are given to characterizing the homotopy type of differentiable manifolds and classifying manifolds within a given homotopy type. This theory was first extensively developed in Kervaire and Milnor [34] in the case of homotopy spheres, globalized by S. P. Novikov [49] and the author [6] for closed 1-connected manifolds, and extended to the bounded case by Wall [65] and Golo [23]. The monograph is concerned with the most general statements of the problems in mechanics of rods. Various types of external loads that a rod may be subject to are discussed. Advanced technique that includes vector is used in the derivation of linear analysis, linear algebra, and distributions and nonlinear equilibrium equations. The use of this technique helps us to make transformations and rearrangement of equations more transparent and compact. Theoretical basics of rods interacting with external and internal flows of fluid and the derivation of the formulas for the hydrodynamic and aerody namic forces are presented. The book consists of six chapters and appendices and may be convention ally divided into two parts. That is, Chapters 1 to 3 contain, in the main, theoretical material, whereas Chapters 4 to6 illustrate the application of the theoretical results to problems of practical interest. Problems for self-study are found in Chapters 1, 3, 4, and 5. The solutions to most of the problems are given in Appendix B. This technique can be combined with ultra-low field MRI which is discussed in the last part. This combination may provide a new unique tool for studies of brain functions.
