Neuware -Most of the texts available on lasers deal with laser engineering and laser applications, only a few of them treating theoretical aspects of the laser at an advanced level. Introduction to Laser Physics provides an introduction to the essential physics of quantum electronics and lasers. Fundamental topics in modern optics, the applicability of various theoretical approaches, and the physical meaning of laser-related phenomena are carefully described. Experimental results and properties of practical lasers are interwoven, thereby allowing an explicit demonstration of the rate equation approach and the semiclassical treatment. The basic concepts of nonlinear optical devices and laser spectroscopy are intro- duced. The second edition includes additional information on optical resonators, minor improvements of the text and several new problems, completed with solutions.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 248 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -In the pages that follow, an attempt is made to examine those sections of the Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion which deal with the Argument from Design - the argument which purports to prove that certain observed similarities between the design of the world and machines of human contrivance countenance reasoning by analogy to the conclusion that the cause of the design of the world resembles human intelligence. The sections which deal with the Argument from Design, and with which I am therefore concerned, are Parts I through VIII and Part XII. I argue that a clue to Hume's discussion of the Argument from Design is to be found in Section XII of the first Enquiry, in which Hume presents his most thorough analysis of philosophic dogmatism and scepticism. The Dialogues, as will be shown, follows precisely Hume's recommendations in this Section for bringing the dogmatist to the position which Hume himself endorses - 'mitigated scepticism. ' It is, then, the position of the mitigated sceptic which is elaborated in Part XII of the Dialogues. The belief in an intelligent designer of the world is shown to be akin to certain other beliefs discussed by Hume - causality, physical objects, a continuing self - which are usually referred to in the literature as 'natural beliefs. ' The mitigated sceptic's defense of the unknowability of the divine nature is seen to be in accordance with Hume's view that whatever is believed naturally cannot be known or understood.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 184 pp. Englisch.

Añadir al carritoBuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - From the nineteen sixties onwards a branch of philosophy of science has come to development, called history-oriented philosophy of science. This development constitutes a reaction on the then prevailing logical empiricist conception of scientific knowledge. The latter was increasingly seen as suffering from insurmountable internal problems, like e. g. the problems with the particular 'observational-theoretical distinction' on which it drew. In addition the logical empiricists' general approach was increasingly criticized for two external shortcomings. Firstly, the examples of scientific knowledge that the logical empiricists were focusing on were con sidered as too simplistic to be informative on the nature of real life science. Secondly, it was felt that the attention of these philosophers of science was restricted to the static aspects of scientific knowledge, while neglecting its developmental aspects. History-oriented philosophy of science has taken up the challenge implicit in the latter two criticisms, i. e. to develop accounts of science that would be more adequate for understanding the development 1 of real life science. One of the more successful products of this branch of philosophy of science is Lakatos's theory of scientific development, sometimes called the 'methodology of scientific research programmes'. This theory conceives science as consisting of so called research program mes developing in time, and competing with each other over the issue which one generates the best explan~tions of the phenomena that they address.

EPA had awarded a contract to Research Triangle Inst~ute (RTIl in response to a proposal that Bill wrote on measuring these benefits. After meeting with the EPA project officer, Dr Ann Fisher, the basic outlines of what would become this research were framed. Upon the suggestion of Bob Anderson, then chief of the Benefits Branch at EPA, we selected the Monongahela River as the focal point of a case study that would compare alternative benefit measurement approaches. Exactly how this case study would be done remained vague, but Ann urged that there be a survey and that nonuse benefits be included in the question naire design. Of course, Bill agreed. At the same time, Kerry was independently working on a review article that tied together some of the loose threads in the option value literature. He had also been thinking about how to measure option value, as well as working on ways to generalize the travel cost approach for estimating benefits of site attributes. Glenn Morris at RTI suggested that Bill have lunch with him and Kerry and that they could talk about Bill's research to see if there were any mutual interest. Over the lunch and Bill's ever present dessert in a Chapel Hill restaurant, we found out just how much we have in common.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 348 pp. Englisch.

The 1994 conference on Subsea Control and Data Acquisition formed no exception, since it covers subjects at the cutting edge of modern technology. It is a matter of increasing concern that products are becoming overspecified, resulting in excessive costs and longer development schedules, while not conferring an equivalent benefit in reliability of the finished product. Subsea Control and Data Acquisition is vital reading for all subsea control system designers, manufacturers and operators, equipment consultants, application engineers, academics in the subsea engineering field, and all subsea engineers.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 276 pp. Englisch.

Dane ('Duke') Picard takes the reader on journeys across deserts, mountains, canyons, and rivers from the American Southwest to Italy and France. His blend of vivid description and humor evokes the rugged days of field petroleum geology in the Great Plains and pastel Badlands of Utah and Wyoming in the 1950s and later days unlocking the geological secrets of sandstone in the Rockies. Along the way, he pokes gentle fun at the academic life in stories that will make anyone smile who's ever sat on a faculty committee or chaired a professional meeting. The final essays on his travels through Provence and Italy are rich with details of the beauty and the history - both human and geological - of the regions. M.D. Picard is the author of numerous professional articles and books, and has served as president of the National Association of Geology Teachers, the Society of Sedimentary Geology, and the Rocky Mountain section of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. Neuware - The first two 'Brain Heart Conferences' in Jerusalem in 1978 and 1983 were based upon the common interests of clinically orientated neurologists and cardiologists in the problems of centr'al autonomic control and autonomic disturbances of the cardiovascular system. The relatively slow scientific progress, at least clinically, in this area may be due to the fact that neither cardiologists nor neurologists felt competent in both topics. Furthermore, it has become increasingly difficult to have an overall view of the basic research and its clinical applications in this field. New research methods, based on a comtination of morphological, biochemical, and physiological techniques, have enabled the functional differentiation of various areas of the brain and subsequently also of the autonomic nervous system. The simple dualistic concept of an antagonistic sympathetic-parasympathetic regulation of the circulatory system is no longer valid. It is clear that numerous neurotransmitters, in particular the neuropeptides, are involved in a highly differentiated subdivision of the autonomic system. One of the aims of the IIIrd International Brain Heart Conference was therefore to supply a synopsis of the latest developments in basic research undertaken in this field by exceptionally competent scientists, to clinically orientated neurologists and cardiologists, and thus to provide new impulses for clinical research.

The monograph, GRM, focuses on the full set of implications of General Relativity Theory, as a fundamental theory of matter in all domains, from elementary particle physics to cosmology. It is shown there to exhibit an explicit unification of the gravitational and electromagnetic fields of force with the inertial manifestations of matter, expressing the latter explicitly in terms of a covariant field theory within the structure of this general theory. This monograph will focus, primarily, on the special relativistic limit of the part of this general field theory of matter that deals with inertia, in the domain where quantum mechanics has been evoked in contemporary physics as a funda mental explanation for the behavior of elementary matter. Many of the results presented in this book are based on earlier published works in the journals, which will be listed in the Bibliography. These results will be presented here in an expanded form, with more discussion on the motivation and explanation for the theoretical development of the subject than space would allow in normal journal articles, and they will be presented in one place where there would then be a more unified and coherent explication of the subject.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 248 pp. Englisch.

This book is a treatise on digital modulation theory, with an emphasis on these more recent innovations. It has its origins in a collabor ation among the authors that began in 1977. At that time it seemed odd to us that the subjects of error-correcting codes and data modulation were so separated; it seemed also that not enough understanding underlay the mostly ad hoc approaches to data transmission. A great many others were intrigued, too, and the result was a large body of new work that makes up most of this book. Now the older disciplines of detection theory and coding theory have been generalized and applied to the point where it is hard to tell where these end and the theories of signal design and modulation begin. Despite our emphasis on the events of the last ten years, we have included all the traditional topics of digital phase modulation. Signal space concepts are developed, as are simple phase-shift-keyed and pulse-shaped modulations; receiver structures are discussed, from the simple linear receiver to the Viterbi algorithm; the effects of channel filtering and of hardlimiting are described. The volume thus serves well as a pedagogical book for research engineers in industry and second-year graduate students in communications engineering. The production of a manageable book required that many topics be left out.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 520 pp. Englisch.

Boom in his preface to the Fourth Edition, published late in 1971. That edition was produced by traditional typesetting methods from compilations of biographical data prepared by national Sub-Editors. The major effort required to produce a directory by manual methods provided the impetus to use computer techniques for the Fifth Edition. The account of the production of the first computer assisted Directory was described by S.C. Abrahams in the preface of the Fifth Edition. Computer composition, which required a machine readable data base, offered several major advantages. The choice of typeface and range of characters was flexible. Corrections and additions to the data base were rapid and, once established, it was hoped updating for future editions would be simple and inexpensive. The data base was put to other Union uses, such as preparation of mailing labels and formulation of lists of crystallographers with specified common fields of interest. The Fifth Edition of the World Directory of Crystallographers was published in June of 1977, the Sixth in May of 1981. The Subject Indexes for the Fifth and Sixth Editions were printed in 1978 and 1981 respectively, both having a limited distribution. 284 pp. Englisch.

The Topic and the structure of the Proceedings The papers in this book are the proceedings of a conference held at the Economics Department of the Graduate Faculty of the New School for Social Research in March 1985 in New York for which financial support was provided by .the West German Consulate. The topic of the conference was 'Competition, Instability, and Nonlinear Cycles.' A number of mathematical economists from Italy, West Germany, France, Japan, and the u.s. were invited as participants in this meeting. The conference was preceded by two other conferences in which several of the invited scholars had taken part. One, on 'la gravitation des prix,' took place in Nanterre, France,in March 1984. The other was held at the New School for Social Research in April 1984 on 'Price of Production in Joint Production systems.' Both conference were concerned with classical prices of production systems and their revival in the form developed by Sraffa and Pasinetti (1977). In these conferences, considerable interest arose in more properly modeling the dynamics of prices of production systems in a multi sectoral framework by utilizing modern mathematical tools of dynamical systems. Such a discussion on the dynamics of the classical process of competition and the stability of classical production prices was originally initiated by several papers by Nikaido (1977, 1983, 1984) and further pursued by several scholars (see Steedman, 1983; Boggio, 1980; Kuroki, 1983; Dumenil/Levy, 1983; Krause, 1983, 1984; Hosoda, 1985; Filippini, 1985). 360 pp. Englisch.

The editors and authors feel strongly that more standardiza tion is needed on a worldwide basis in cancer therapy. This, of course, is only possible if experts from all countries subscribe to a joint policy of making their treatment designs available to practising oncologists all over the world. Current Treatment of Cancer will discuss all the equipment and methods now in use in cancer therapy. It will cover all types of cancer, thus providing the reader with comprehensive information on cancer management. In recent decades there has been a tremendous improvement in the treatment of cancer, and there is hope for even further success in this fight. We are convinced that this series will help us to make a concerted response to the challenge of cancer. VICC Treatment and Rehabilitation Programme Ismail Elsebai Chairman VII Preface During the past two decades we have witnessed an exciting evolution in the un derstanding and management of hematologic malignancies. The number of drugs available 20 years ago for the treatment of acute leukemia was so small that the disease in children and in adults could be discussed within one chapter. Since then, rapid progress has been made in the management of childhood leukemia, making for a much better prognosis. Over the past 10 years we have seen the same developments in respect of leukemia in adults. 128 pp. Englisch.

Most of the flows are buoyancy flows, i.e. currents in which gravity acts on small density differences. Part I presents the basic concepts of stagnant, densit- stratified water, and of flowing non-miscible stratified fluids. The similarity to the (presumed) well-known open channel flow, subject to a reduced gravity, is illustrated. Part II treats the miscible density stratified flows. In outlining the governing equations, the strong coupling between the turbulence (the mixing) and the mean flow is emphasized. The presentation and discussions of the basic governing equa tions are followed by illustrative examples. Separate chapters are devoted to Dense Bottom Currents, Free Penetrative Convec tion, Wind-driven Stratified Flow, Horizontal Buoyancy Flow and Vertical jet/plumes. Part III presents some examples of practical problems solved on the basis of knowledge given in the present lecture notes. It is the author's experience that the topics treated in chapter 8 and in the subsequent chapters are especially well suited for self-tuition, followed by a study-circle. From the titles and contents of 1449 key papers and books which are listed and numbered in Sec tion 5, I have selected keywords and subject headings and ar ranged them alphabetically together with the numbers of perti nent references in Section 3. Number 1153, for instance, denotes my book' Applied Statis tics'. It contains a bibliographical section on pages 568 to 641. Supplementary material is displayed in this small bibliographi cal guide. It also complements well-known textbooks of Box, Hunter and Hunter (No.121), Dixon and Massey (No.286), Snedecor and Cochran (No. 1238), and many recent competitors. Since the methodology of statistics is expanding rapidly, many methods are not considered at all or only introduced in the basic textbooks of statistics. There is a need for intermediate statistical methods concerned with increasingly complicated ap plications of statistics to actual research situations. Here the specification of terms helps to find some sources. Since the ref erences vary considerably in length and content, the number of culled or extracted terms per referenced page varies even more, as does also their degree of specialization; however in most cases an intermediate statistical level is maintained. 228 pp. Englisch.

The second edition includes additional information on optical resonators, minor improvements of the text and several new problems, completed with solutions. 248 pp. Englisch.

Two themes are treated which are closely related to each other and to the law of the iterated logarithm: I) curved boundary first passage distributions of Brownian motion, 11) optimal properties of sequential tests with parabolic and nearly parabolic boundaries. In the first chapter I discuss the tangent approximation for Brownianmotion as a global approximation device. This is an extension of Strassen' s approach to t'he law of the iterated logarithm which connects results of fluctuation theory of Brownian motion with classical methods of sequential statistics. In the second chapter I make use of these connections and derive optimal properties of tests of power one and repeated significance tests for the simpiest model of sequential statistics, the Brownian motion with unknown drift. To both topics:there under1ies an asymptotic approach which is closely linked to large deviation theory: the stopping boundaries recede to infinity. This is a well-known approach in sequential stötistics which is extensively discussed in Siegmund's recent book Sequential Analysis'. This approach also leads to some new insights about the law of the iterated logarithm (LIL). Although the LIL has been studied for nearly seventy years the belief is still common that it applies only for large sampIe sizes which can never be obser ved in practice. 152 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -A brief historical account of the background leading to the publication of the first four editions of the World Directory of Crystallographers was presented by G. The Subject Indexes for the Fifth and Sixth Editions were printed in 1978 and 1981 respectively, both having a limited distribution.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 284 pp.

Such a discussion on the dynamics of the classical process of competition and the stability of classical production prices was originally initiated by several papers by Nikaido (1977, 1983, 1984) and further pursued by several scholars (see Steedman, 1983; Boggio, 1980; Kuroki, 1983; Dumenil/Levy, 1983; Krause, 1983, 1984; Hosoda, 1985; Filippini, 1985).Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 360 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -The present lecture notes cover a first course in th~ most common types of stratified flows encountered in Environ mental Hydraulics. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT The author has benefited by the valuable help of his col legues at the Institute of Hydrodynamics and Hydraulic Engin eering, the Technical University of Denmark, especially our librarian Mrs. Kirsten Dj¢rup, our secretary Mrs. Marianne Lewis and our technical draftsman Mrs. Liselotte Norup.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 292 pp. Englisch.
