Neuware -This book describes how the phenomenon of magnetic attraction has been a topic of interest for more than a thousand years, and how our modern understanding of magnetism and its connection with electrical effects, has led to all sorts of applications. From the industrial revolution to the modern data age and medicine, magnetism has enabled all manner of technologies which have shaped our lives in uncountable ways. Moreover, the study of magnetism made a decisive contribution to advances in the understanding of the structure of matter in the first decades of the 20th century. Assuming no background in science, this book captures the magic of the magnet and explains how magnetism has had an inexorable influence on the course of humanity. 204 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware -This open access book introduces crealectics, a new creative methodology that bridges philosophical depth with practical innovation. Drawing on Leibniz's concept of compossibility the idea that not everything possible can coexist in the same world the author develops a five-phase approach to holistic innovation: resetting, crealing, profusing, compossibilizing, and realizing.Tested through real-world applications including case studies with Vattenfall R&D, the crealectic method offers an alternative to purely analytical or dialectical approaches to innovation, what the author calls inner-novation.' The book presents the C.I.P.H.E.R. model (Crealectic Intelligence and Philosophical Health for Eudynamic Realities), demonstrating how individual transformation and collective innovation can work together to create 'the best of compossible worlds.'This interdisciplinary work contributes to possibility studies, sustainability thinking, and innovation methodology, offering practical tools for academics, practitioners, and students seeking approaches to creative problem-solving that honor both diversity and coherence. 160 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware -Pregnant women in the past had sex, yet we know nearly nothing about their sexual desires, or what people thought about sex during pregnancy. While there is much research on the sexual maternal body, studies of pregnancy and sex are lacking. This Palgrave Pivot provides the first history of pregnant women s sexuality in England from 1550 to 1800, with discussion of Northern European perspectives on pregnancy sex. It explores a range of medical literature for descriptions of pregnancy and sexuality, including popular medical and midwifery books, as well as Latin scientific treatises. Alongside these texts, it considers popular culture materials including novels, ballads, pornography, marital guides, and diaries and correspondence. Drawing on methodologies from gender and queer history, the book attempts to locate pregnant women s articulations of desire in this period. Moreover, the book reveals the paradoxical nature of early modern attitudes to sex and pregnancy: women s gravid sexuality was portrayed as natural and desirable, but also excessive, potentially dangerous and disruptive to the foetus. 176 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware -This book examines influence among decision-makers in group decision-making. It is quite common that people influence and are influenced by each other in group decision-making. Likewise, artificial intelligences can influence and be influenced by each other in interaction or collaboration, and both a person and an artificial intelligence can be called an agent. The author explores how humans or artificial intelligences can interact with and influence each other during the decision-making process, where such influence can reshape the outcome of the group decision. With an interdisciplinary approach, various applications are considered including: computer science (distributed computing, distributed artificial intelligence, particularly multi-agent system); economics and management (joint-stock company voting); and politics (domestic elections and international organization decision-making). The book presents settings of group decision-making where agents preferences/choices are influenced (and thus changed) by each other. As the influence of reality faced by an agent usually comes from more than one agent simultaneously, the author provides both cardinal and ordinal approaches, building social influence functions and a matrix influence function, to address multiple sources of influence in group decision-making. To better describe the complex influence in reality, the author provides a framework of the three levels of influence and its mathematical models to address individual, coalitional, and structural influence and their mixed effects in the context of group decision-making. Even though it is not easy to address the influence of structures on an agent as the influencing subject and the influenced object are disparate, the former is the inter-relationships between agents while the latter is the preference/choice of a single agent.Furthermore, the author considers combinatorial and collective decision-making and provides a framework model of influence across multiple agents and issues. 116 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware -This book traces the intertextual genealogy behind Netflix s new series Ripley, directed by Steve Zaillian, and offers a critical examination of Tom Ripley s enduring appeal across different media. As the series quickly climbs Netflix s international charts, this volume provides a timely and insightful contribution to the Ripleyverse, exploring the character s complex moral and sexual dimensions in today s cultural context. McEntee investigates Ripley s role within the televisual antihero genre, engaging with theories from Jason Mittell s Complex TV and Margrethe Bruun Vaage s The Antihero in American Television. While Andrew Scott s portrayal of Ripley aims to generate empathy, this book contends that traditional frameworks for understanding antiheroes are insufficient. Instead, it introduces Eric Leake s notion of difficult empathy as a more appropriate model for analyzing Scott s Ripley, offering a fresh perspective on the character s moral ambiguity. This contrasts sharply with Anthony Minghella s 1999 adaptation, where Matt Damon s Ripley elicited a more straightforward emotional response. Readers will discover a nuanced discussion of how Ripley both adheres to and subverts the conventions of the antihero genre and comments self-reflexively on the process of adaptation. The book invites scholars and students of television studies, film, and literature to engage with these themes, providing a rich resource for understanding the evolving landscape of media narratives. Whether you are a scholar of media studies or a curious reader intrigued by the complexities of modern narratives, this book promises to deepen your understanding of the cultural significance of Tom Ripley s latest iteration. 180 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware -This book critically examines the failures and contradictions of UK drug policy, exposing how current laws disproportionately target marginalised communities while overlooking the widespread harms of legal substances like alcohol. Drawing on the author's unique experiences as a magistrate and bouncer, alongside academic research, policy analysis, and lived experience testimonies, it reveals the systemic injustices embedded in drug enforcement. By contrasting the treatment of so-called 'problematic' versus 'functional' drug users, the book highlights how class, race, and power shape who is punished and who is protected. It also interrogates the influence of moral panic, media narratives, and political ideology on drug legislation, questioning the absence of evidence-based, harm-reduction approaches. Ultimately, the book aims to challenge prevailing assumptions, inform public discourse, and advocate for a more just, ethical, and effective drug policy rooted in health, evidence, and equality.

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware -This book is a study in cultural collegiality and interchange. Over the course of a long life, Thomas Mann established working relationships with some of Hungary's cultural luminaries. On the six occasions that he visited Budapest to give public readings of his work, he met the novelists Dezs¿ Kosztolányi and Sándor Márai. Because they wrote in Hungarian, those distinguished writers were not then widely known outside of Hungary; since then, however, many of their novels have appeared in English and other languages, to critical acclaim. Both Kosztolányi and Márai spoke German fluently and were thus able to engage Mann in serious discussions of the literary art. The Manns were received with pleasure at the Buda villa of József Lukács, a prominent banker whose son György (Georg) was living abroad because of the role he played in the Hungarian Soviet Republic of 1919. The young Lukács wrote primarily, though not exclusively, in German and Mann read and admired his early - and subsequently his later - work. The ensuing literary, epistolary, and personal contacts between the great German writer and the famous Marxist critic and philosopher led Mann to the work of Béla Balázs, the writer and film theorist, and Arnold Hauser, the sociologist of art and literature. It was primarily as a correspondent and a creative writer in need of expert advice that Mann formed a friendship with the learned student of mythology and religion Károly (Karl) Kerényi. From these Hungarians and others, including Arthur Koestler, Aurel Kolnai, Charles de Tolnay, and Béla Bartók, Mann was pleased to acknowledge that he gained insights that contributed immeasurably to his work and self-understanding. At the same time, the Hungarians drew inspiration from their association with one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century. Together with him, they wrote a little-known but fascinating chapter in the cultural history of modern Europe.

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware -This unique book is about the near-death experience of a medical illness, told as a provocative story about activating aloneness, disconnection, pain, suffering, loss, grief, impermanence, healing, resilience, renewal, love, hope, recovery, and a growing dialogue between faith, values, health, and science. The author, a leading addiction psychiatrist describes how he learned the meaning of being a patient through the experience of physical and mental diminishment, vulnerability, and uncertainty. This journey is also about reexamining the author's approach to working with patients living with addiction and how it has profoundly shaped his professional identity and personal life. The book is deeply affirming, for both healthcare practitioners and lay people, offering an invitation to recognize the poignant value of working through their experience of illness, starting a conversation on how they choose to think of the world, themselves, their loved ones, their patients and families (for practitioners), and coming to terms with their own struggles and discovering their internal hidden resources and wisdom. This narrative has no intention to provide an expert advice or a recipe on how people should experience illness and reclaim their personhood and deep worth. A compelling contribution to the clinical literature, Rethinking Illness: A Psychiatrist's Near-Death Reckoning with Healing and Healthcare is written from the heart with profound call for a more holistic and deep appreciation and understanding of the interplay of personal, scientific, spiritual dimensions of health and healing, with the ultimate outcome of change and growth. This genre of memoir is an essential reading for everyone who is willing to examine the experience of living with an illness and everyone in training or working in healthcare.

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware -This open access book presents an integrative vision to achieve better brain health. Across the globe is a growing awareness of the impact of neurological conditions and mental health on wellbeing. Also as populations age, the number of people impacted by brain health conditions also grows, shining a light on the need for brain health solutions that are sustainable. Although the knowledge of what is working for a variety of brain health conditions continues to expand, we need to realize that not all solutions will come from medical research. What is needed to address brain health in a more sustainable way is a better understanding of the care that community provides and how a vision of better brain health will be found by deepening our understanding of the role of community and elevating the value of their contributions. Community organizations provide frontline care and have a tangible understanding of the needs that accompany the populations above. This means they are well equipped to provide local and accessible care. Community is a place in which brain health solutions can be delivered in a sustainable, effective, efficient, equitable and person-centered way. As such, the knowledge community organizations can contribute to the bigger picture of health care is important. This project responds to the need to better understand community care by highlighting how the role of evaluative thinking in the community sector can help us generate evidence to navigate towards better brain health futures. By first recognizing and then supporting community-led care, we can expand how we view and receive care.Along these lines, the book moves from a view of healthcare as being only delivered in hospitals and clinics to recognizing the continuum of care and integration of healthcare options. It provides a space for stories of health care solutions that indeed have connected health to the social and the community sectors. By exploring community interventions that have been integrated with biomedical/neuroscientific solutions, we will learn how integrated sustainable solutions can be created. The role of evaluation in helping facilitate the creation of such solutions also will be explored. This project is a partnership between the Ontario Brain Institute and the Evaluation Centre for Complex Health Interventions and reflects our collective learnings from our work in developmental evaluation and brain health. 248 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware -This book is the first to consider the relationships between the Open Science and DEI (social responsiveness) movements in psychology. These two movements sometimes work smoothly together, but are also sometimes in tension. They can differ in their understanding of what science is and how psychology should behave as a science. This volume aims to shed light on the trade-offs inherent in trying to search for truth while promoting social justice. It covers the history and philosophy of these two movements as background for an exploration of the tensions between them. This volume moves beyond the conflict, acknowledging the conflicts but also showing the way toward a unified field of psychology. It will appeal to researchers and students, as well as those who train them. Exploring the relationships between these two movements will be enlightening to scholars as well as practitioners. 61 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware -In June of 1925, almost a hundred years ago, Werner Heisenberg spent ten days on the island of Heligoland - thanks to his hayfever. This respite afforded him the time to write an article that would mark the beginning of the history of modern quantum theory. Two years later, in October of 1927, thefifth Solvay Conference, arguably the most famous gathering in the history of physics, took place in Brussels, bringing the riveting story of the origins of quantum mechanics to a close. During this crucial and relatively short period between 1925 and 1927, eight physicists from five countries developed a theory that would radically change the physical understanding of our world and would become the basis for almost all advanced technologies: transistors, lasers, light-emitting diodes, medical imaging, the electron microscope and much more. The reader will travel through time from September 1924 to October 1927 and learn by way of monthly entries how quantummechanics came into being, what the people involved experienced and thought in thecontext of the time they lived in, and howaunified whole slowly emerged from the interactions of these individuals. The book is aimed at laypeople who are fascinated by quantum mechanics and its history. They will learn that this theory, like Anita Berber, jazz or the invention of television, is a characteristic child of the 1920s. 272 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware -This open access book examines the first modern diplomatic contact between Europe and East Asia: the 1517 Portuguese embassy to China. The experience did not end well, for in 1521, the Ming Court decided to cut off relations, and a battle broke out between the Guangdong and Portuguese fleets. This work seeks to explain why this happened. Making extensive use of both Chinese and Western archival sources, it proposes a new interpretation one that breaks with the traditional clash of civilizations viewpoint and focuses instead on the diversity of actors and the complex relationships between them. 248 pp. Englisch.
