Añadir al carritoBuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware -Grazing animals enjoy an ambiguous reputation in the field of nature conservation. Livestock are often treated as a scourge, yet native large herbivores form the prime attraction of many a reserve. This book gives the first comprehensive overview of the use of grazing as a tool in conservation management. Considering in turn the ecological and historical background, the impact of grazing on community structure, management applications and future prospects, this book examines issues such as the role of herbivores as keystone species, the assessment of habitat quality and the function of scientific models in advancing grazing management. Large herbivores are shown to be potentially powerful allies in the management of nature reserves, particularly in the maintenance, enhancement or restoration of biodiversity. Grazing and Conservation Management will appeal to conservation biologists and rangeland managers, providing them with a clearer understanding of grazing and conservation management.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 232 pp. Englisch.

Añadir al carritoTaschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware -Applied Mathematics is the art of constructing mathematical models of observed phenomena so that both qualitative and quantitative results can be predicted by the use of analytical and numerical methods. Theoretical Mechanics is concerned with the study of those phenomena which can be ob served in everyday life in the physical world around us. It is often characterised by the macroscopic approach which allows the concept of an element or particle of material, small compared to the dimensions of the phenomena being modelled, yet large compared to the molecular size of the material. Then atomic and molecular phenomena appear only as quantities averaged over many molecules. It is therefore natural that the mathemati cal models derived are in terms of functions which are continuous and well behaved, and that the analytical and numerical methods required for their development are strongly dependent on the theory of partial and ordinary differential equations. Much pure research in Mathematics has been stimu lated by the need to develop models of real situations, and experimental observations have often led to important conjectures and theorems in Analysis. It is therefore important to present a careful account of both the physical or experimental observations and the mathematical analysis used. The authors believe that Fluid Mechanics offers a rich field for il lustrating the art of mathematical modelling, the power of mathematical analysis and the stimulus of applications to readily observed phenomena. 160 pp. Englisch.

Añadir al carritoBuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware -The material in this book reflects, in many respects, the culmination of several years of research regarding the measurement of monetary policy. On all the issues addressed in the text, I have thus attempted to provide a perspective of the type that can only be gained from 'living with' a topic over an extended time horizon. I have often said that I came to understand the monetary indicators literature only after having written dozens of papers on the subject. This statement may seem a bit trite, but I feel certain that anyone who has waded through this morass (or at least tried to) can fully empathize and recognize the grain of truth therein. It is my sincere hope that the synthesis given in the work will calm the fears and anxieties that often (and understandably) plague beginners in this field. In settling down to the process of 'pulling together' this manuscript, I was surprised to find the ease and consistency with which various topics, explored at widely diverse times and in no particular order, meshed into a unified whole. I attempted to write the book in a manner that would simultaneously be generally comprehensible to students (particularly at the graduate level) and to practitioners desiring a relatively thorough overview of the indicators literature and yet be of value to scholars desiring to explore (and hopefully advance) this field.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 164 pp. Englisch.

This work'shop was initiated and sponsored by the Environmental Agency of the Federal Republic of Germany (project officer: Dr. J. Pankrath) as part of a research contract (project leader: Dr. B. Ulrich). THE PROBLEM SEEN UNDER THE ASPECT OF ADMINISTRATION The problem of forest damage caused by air pollution is not new in Europe. Already in 1983 a comprehensive report from Schroeder and Reuss about vegetation damages by fume in the Harz mountains was published. In 1923, Prof. Dr. Julius Stocklasa of the Bohemian Technical Highschool in Prague was concerned with research of toxical effects of sulphur dioxide in his publication 'The damage of vegetation by flue gas and exhalations of facili ties'. This comprehensive and instructive work concludes with the sentence: 'It is already high time for the governments of all cultural states to take legal, police and private measures in order to prevent damage by flue gases'. In the neighbourhood of industries with high gaseous and dust emissions damages have been shown to occur for a long timei these deleterious effects have influenced the growth of trees and in extreme cases have even caused their early death.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 412 pp. Englisch.

However, it only became known as a scientific discipline under that name when the physical domain studied by STP became accessible to in situ observation and measurement by man or man-made instruments. Indeed, it was STP that provided the initial scientific driving force for the launching of man-made devices into extra-terrestrial space during the International Geophysical Year - aided of course by the genetically engrained drive of humans to expand their frontiers of knowledge, influence and dominance. We may define STP as the discipline dealing with the variable components of solar corpuscular and electromagnetic emissions, the physical processes governing their sources and their propagation through interplanetary space, and the physical-chemical processes related to their interaction with the Earth and other bodies in interplanetary space. Much of STP deals with fully-or partially-ionized gas flows and related energy, momentum and mass transfer in what now appears as one single system made up of distinct but strongly interacting parts, reaching from the photosphere out to the confines of the heliopause, engulfing planets and other solar system bodies, and dipping deep into 6 the Earth's atmosphere.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 436 pp. Englisch.

Neuware - This new work on oral complications of cancer chemotherapy is edited by two dentists who have made pioneering contributions in this previously neglected area. Their efforts have established the invaluable role of the dentist in oncologic research and cancer patient management. The editors have collected nine chapters that will be of interest to dentists and dental hygienists, oncology nurses, and all physicians treating cancer patients with chemo therapeutic agents. Background chapters on oral complications of cancer chemotherapy, the pharmacology of chemotherapeutic agents, and principles of infection management and prevention set the stage for more specific chapters focusing on prevention and treatment of chemotherapy induced oral and dental disorders. Valuable contributions to the supportive care of the cancer patient are contained in this book. A full comprehension of this book, coupled with an appreciation for advances in other areas of supportive care, such as antiemetic therapy and pain control, will allow all those involved in cancer treatment to be more successful. A large part of our lack of success in dealing with these patients is related to our empiric therapeutic attempts. Slowly our basic understanding of the lung cancers is improving and techniques are becoming available to allow us to better understand the biology of these neoplasms. This volume reviews several areas of interest in regard to the biologic behavior and characteris of lung cancer. tics Chapters deal with the in vitro growth of small cell lung cancer, the inves tigation of growth factors in human lung cancer, the production of mono clonal antibodies against lung cancer and the application and potential use fulness of the human tumor cloning assay in lung cancer management. These avenues of investigation are likely to establish a more scientific basis on which more rational therapy can be designed. Carney and associates have established several continuous small cell lung cancer cell lines in their laboratory. The amine precursor uptake and decar boxylation (APUD) properties of this neoplasm have been confirmed by demonstrating the presence of neurosecretory granules and high levels of the APUD enzyme L-dopa decarboxylase. In addition, several new markers have been documented including bombesin, creatine-kinase BB and neuron specific enolase. These tumor products along with others may be useful serum markers in patients with small cell lung cancer.

New research work is published in a perplexing diversity of publications and is inevitably concerned with the minutiae of the subject. The sheer number of research journals and papers also causes confusion and difficulties of assimilation. Review articles usually presuppose a background know ledge of the field and are inevitably rather restricted in scope. There is thus a need for short but authoritative introductions to those areas of modern biological research which are either not dealt with in standard introductory textbooks or are not dealt with in sufficient detail to enable the student to go on from them to read scholarly reviews with profit. This series of books is designed to satisfy this need. The authors have been asked to produce a brief outline of their subject assuming that their readers will have read and remembered much of a standard introductory textbook of biology. This outline then sets out to provide by building on this basis, the conceptual framework within which modern research work is progressing and aims to give the reader an indication of the problems, both conceptual and practical, which must be overcome if progress is to be maintained. 96 pp. Englisch.

To a certain extent, this kind of representation is analogous to the one on which 'resonance theory' is based and this fact can be projected by a comparison of the various ways in which MOVB theory depicts a species made up of three core and two ligand MO's which define two subsystems containing a total of six electrons and the ways in which 'resonance theory' (i. e. , qualitative VB theory) depicts a six-electron-six-AO species such as the pi system of CH =CH-CH=CH-CH=O. The 2 different pictorial representations are shown in Scheme 1 so that the analogies are made evident. First of all, the total MOVB diagrammatic representation of the 6/5 species is obtained by a linear combination of three complete bond diagrams, as in Al, which describe the optimal linear combination of!l! MOVB Configuration Wavefunctions (CW's). By the same token, a total VB diagrammatic representation of the 6/6 species can be obtained by writing a 'dot structure', as in Bl, and taking this to mean the optimal linear combination of all VB CW's. Next, we can approxi mate the MOVB wavefunction of the 6/5 species by one complete (or detailed) bond dia gram' (A2). No simple VB representation analogy can be given in this case. Alterna tively, we can approximate the MOVB wavefunction by a linear combination of compact bond diagrams, as in A3, in the way described before. 600 pp. Englisch.

Alterna tively, we can approximate the MOVB wavefunction by a linear combination of compact bond diagrams, as in A3, in the way described before.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 600 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -The theory of Lie groups has proven to be a most powerful analytical tool in many areas of modern scientific endeavors. It was only a few years ago that economists discovered the usefulness of this approach in their study of the frontiers of modern economic theory. These frontiers include the areas of technical change and productivity, technology and preference, economic conservation laws, comparative statics and integrability conditions, index number problems, and the general theory of ~ observable market behavior (Sato [1980, 1981], Nono [1971], Sato and N~no [1983], Russell [1983]). 1 In Nono [1971] and Sa to [1981, Chapter 4] the concept of 'G-neutral' (group neutral) technical change was first introduced as a natural extension of the well-known concepts of Hicks, Harrod, Solow and Sato-Beckmann-Rose neutrality. The present monograph contains a further extension of the G-neutral technical change to the case of non-constant-returns-to-scale technology and to the case of multiple factor inputs. The methodology of total productivity estimation by means of Lie group transformations is also developed in this monograph. We would like to express our sincere thanks to many individuals notably to Professor M. J. Beckmann, Professor F. Mimura, Professor G. Suzawa, T. Mitchell, K. Mino and P. Calem, for their numerous contributions at various stages of this work. We are also grateful to Marion Wathey for her usual superb typing of this difficult manuscript. Providence, R. I. , U. S. Neuware -The student of biological science in his final years as an undergraduate and his first years as a graduate is expected to gain some familiarity with current research at the frontiers of his discipline. This outline then sets out to provide by building on this basis, the conceptual framework within which modern research work is progressing and aims to give the reader an indication of the problems, both conceptual and practical, which must be overcome if progress is to be maintained.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 96 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -For most people, intuitive notions concerning probabilities are connected with relative frequencies of occurrence. For example, when we say that in toss ing a coin, the probability of its coming up 'heads' is 1/2, we usually mean that in a large number of tosses, about 1/2 of the tosses will come up heads. Unfortunately, relative frequency of occurrence has proved to be an unsatis factory starting point in defining probability. Although there have been attempts to make frequency of occurrence part of the axiomatic structure of probability theory, the currently accepted formu1ation is one based on measure theory due to Ko1mogorov. In this formulation frequency of occurrence is an interpretation for probability rather than adefinition. This inter pretation is justified under suitab1e conditions by the 1aw of 1arge numbers. The starting point of probability theory is usua11y taken to be an experi ment the outcome of which is not fixed apriori. Some fami1iar examples inc1ude tossing a die, observation of a noise vo1tage at a fixed time, the error in measuring a physica1 parameter, and the exact touchdown time of an aircraft. Let ~ denote the set of all possib1e outcomes of an experiment. For examp1e, for the experiment of tossing one die, ~ = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}, whi1e for the touchdown time of an aircraft, ~ might be chosen to be 0 ~ tSpringer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 188 pp. Englisch.

An outstanding tutorial on the classical problem of spectral density estimation is given by Kay and Marple (1981). For an excellent collection of fundamental papers dealing with modern spec tral density estimation as well as an extensive bibliography on other fields of application, see Childers (1978). To devise a high-performance sample spectral density estimator, one must develop a rational basis for its construction, provide a feasible algorithm, and demonstrate its performance with respect to prescribed criteria. An algorithm is certainly feasible if it can be implemented on a computer, possesses computational efficiency (as measured by compu tational complexity analysis), and exhibits numerical stability. An estimator shows high performance if it is insensitive to violations of its underlying assumptions (i.e., robust), consistently shows excellent frequency resolutipn under realistic sample sizes and signal-to-noise power ratios, possesses a demonstrable numerical rate of convergence to the true population spectral density, and/or enjoys demonstrable asymp totic statistical properties such as consistency and efficiency. 236 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Our knowledge of postoperative thromboembolic complications has increased enormously over the past 2 decades, particularly where diag nosis and prophylaxis are concerned. The 125 I-fibrinogen method of diagnosing thrombosis has completely changed our concept of the frequency, occurrence, and natural course of thrombosis, and it has formed the basis of most thromboprophylactic studies. Concurrently with the development of this diagnostic method, two methods for the prophylaxis of thrombosis have come into vo gue, namely low-dose heparin and dextran. Both these methods were tested in very extensive studies during the seventies, and their value has been unequivocally proved, for reducing both the frequency of thrombosis with and without symptoms, and the frequency of fatal pulmonary embolism. Thromboprophylaxis is not particularly common in surgery; how ever, and its general use is far from uncontested. It has been argued that not only does it complicate surgical activities and make them mo re expensive, but it also involves an unacceptable number of other complications. 252 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The essays in this volume were presented to Professor Isamu Yamada in honor of his seventy-third birthday. In view of his many professional contributions and associations, a single volume of essays is really insufficient to house the works of all those who wish to be part of a venture of this kind. Therefore, the editors would like to apologize to those friends and well-wishers of Professor Yamada who could not be accommodated in this volume. Born in Nagoya in 1909, Professor Yamada began his brilliant career at Nagoya Commercial College where he studied economics, statistics, mathematics and physics. After serving as a Professor of Economics and Statistics at Yokohama College between 1939-1940, Professor Yamada moved to Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo, where he served as a Professor of Econometrics until his retirement in 1973. Currently, he is teaching at Asia University as a Professor of Economics and Statistics. During his long tenure at Hitotsubashi University (where Professor Ichiro Nakayama, a 'Japanese Schumpeter', served as President of the University), Professor Yamada was instrumental in introducing several generation of students to the methods of modern econometrics. One of the editors (Ryuzo Sato) of this volume is a direct beneficiary of his lectures on modern econometric techniques. In the 1950's, Professor Yamada was one of several prominent Japanese economists who were selected for study abroad. It was during this time, on a visit to the Cowles Commission at the University of Chicago, that Professor Yamada met the other editor of this volume. 212 pp. Englisch.
