However, it actually had its beginnings much earlier when, as an undergraduate at the University of Virginia, I first read Hume's 'Of Miracles' and became interested in it. (Fascinated would be too strong. ) My teacher put the following marginal comment in a paper I wrote about it: 'Suppose someone told you that they had been impregnated by an angel whispering into their ear. Wouldn't you think they had gone dotty ' She had spent time in England. I thought about it. I agreed that I would not have believed such testimony, but did not think this had much to do with Hume's argument against belief in miracles. What surprised me even more was the secondary literature. I became convinced that Hume's argument was misunderstood. My main thesis is established in Part I. This explains Hume's argument against justified belief in miracles and shows how it follows from, and is intrinsically connected with, his more general metaphysics. Part II Part I. It should give the reader a more complete understanding builds on of both the structure of Hume's argument and of his crucial and questionable premises. Neuware -The present book is the result of work carried out over a period of about ten years by the author and his co-workers in order to describe more accurately the slow irreversible deformation in time of the rocks surrounding underground openings. To begin with, our efforts were directed toward a better under standing of the mechanical behaviour of rocks and to the formulation of more precise mathematical models for their dominant mechanical properties, mainly irreversible dilatancy and/or compressibility during creep. Subsequent efforts were focused on finding improved solutions to important mining and oil engineering problems, such as, for instance, the creep of rocks around wells and tunnels, short-term failure which may occur around an underground opening, damage and failure which take place after long-time intervals, the tunnel support analysis incorporating rock creep, etc. The book is the result of a great number of questions posed either by mining engineers or by the author himself, and of the corresponding answers (unfor tunately often only partial answers). This dialogue must certainly be continued in order to improve the models and to formulate models for other kinds of rocks, or, ultimately to obtain solutions for other important engineering problems. Data on the School as a whole are included only in the first and last part of the book. This work is based on my monograph (1985), which appeared in Polish. The influence of the forest on operations is described at length, the terrain, topography, forest soils as well as the engineering characteristics of trees and forest stands. It also considers the impact of oper ations on the forest. The principal author of this volume was Dr. Ross Silversides. Chapters 11, 12 and 13 were written by-Prof. Sundberg.

One species, the rice brown planthopper, is among the most economically important pests in Asia. In past decades, government policies encouraged the control of rice planthoppers with synthetic pesticides, a tactic which promoted insecticide resistance and often led to the pesticide-induced resurgence of pest populations. To deter planthopper outbreaks, a more ecologically sound management strategy is being implemented, one based on a thorough investigation of population dynamics, natural enemies, and the genetics of host plant and insecticide adaptation. In the natural habitats of North America and Europe, scientists have also used planthoppers as model organisms to test ecological and evolutionary theory. The consequence of these diverse studies is an extremely scattered literature on planthoppers that has never been synthesized from an ecological perspective. Both convective and diffusive processes are strongly influenced by the effect of disorder of granular matter in porous media, suspensions, fluidized beds or/and by the randomness caused in turbulent flow field. This book has been initiated by a NATO summer institute held in Cargese (Corsica, FRANCE) from June 15 th to 27 th 1987 . Its aim was to associate statistical physicists, fluid mechanicians and specialists of chemical engineering on the problems of the relation between disorder and mixing and, in this respect, this is a ' premiere '. This book is made of chapters based on lectures given in the meeting. However we have paid a considerable attention to harmonize the contents and styles of chapters made by scientists trained in different communities and using different languages and techniques to describe similar problems. The Prelude by the editors of the book introduces the different points and is a biased view of some of the important and most active aspects of the subjects developed. We wish to thank all contributors and students of the institute who gave the style of the present interdisciplinary approach.
