Neuware -Of all of Martin Gardner's writings, none gained him a wider audience or was more central to his reputation than his Mathematical Recreations column in 'Scientific American', which virtually defined the genre of popular mathematics writing for a generation. Flatland, Hydras and Eggs: Mathematical Mystifications will be the final collection of these columns, covering a period roughly from 1979 to Gardner's retirement as a regular columnist in 1986. The notable trend over Gardner's career is the increasing sophistication of the mathematics he has been able to translate into his famously lucid prose. These columns show him at the top of his form and are not to be missed by anyone with an interest in mathematics. As always in his published collections, Gardner includes letters received from mathematicians and other commenting on the ideas presented in the columns.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 404 pp. Englisch.

Despite occurring in gal- ies many millions of light-years away, amateur telescopes can reveal these colossal explosions, and even discover them. In the past 25 years, the amateur astronomer¿s contribution to supernova research has been staggering. Visual variable star observers with access to large-aperture amateur telescopes have contributed a steady stream of magnitude estimates of the brightest and closest supernovae. In addition, with the increasing availability of robotic telescopes and CCD techn- ogy, more and more amateurs are discovering supernovae from their backyards. Worldwide, there have been more than 400 supernovae discovered by amateur astronomers using amateur telescopes. Supernova research has never been so important. Recent professional measurements of the most distant Type Ia sup- novae have revealed the staggering and unexpected discovery that the acceleration of the Universe is actually increasing! This,in turn, has led to a new phrase, dark energy, entering the astronomical vocabulary; a mysterious force,in opposition to gravity, driving the accelerated expansion. Although amateurs cannot study the farthest supernovae, their discovery and measurement of the closer examples helps to re ne the science that is the hottest topic in cosmology today; that is,pinning down the history of the Universe and how much mass and energy exists within it today. As always, amateur astronomers are making a valuable contribution, and, hopefully, this book might inspire a few more to monitor and discover new supernovae. Martin Mobberley Suffolk, U. Añadir al carritoTaschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware -Sirius - A Diamond in the Night will tell two stories. The first and most obvious is why the star known as Sirius has been regarded as an important fixture of the night sky by many civilizations and cultures since the beginnings of history. A second, but related, narrative is the prominent part that Sirius has played in how we came to achieve our current scientific understanding of the nature and fate of the stars. These two topics have a long intertwined history, and the telling of one story eventually leads back to the other. Presently, new observations from space are revealing, in precise terms, how stars like Sirius and the Sun have evolved and what they will ultimately become, while at the same time answering some of the age-old questions about Sirius. The book is divided into five parts. The first (Chapters 1 and 2) describes how Sirius was viewed by the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Greece and Rome. The second part (Chapters 3-5) describes how early astronomers sought to determine the nature of the stars, including the prediction that Sirius possessed an unseen companion and the eventual discovery of this white dwarf companion 18 years later. The third part (chapters 6-9) describes the major discoveries in stellar astrophysics revealed by observations of Sirius. The fourth part (chapters 10 and 11) probes the modern scientific and pseudo scientific controversies involving Sirius, including the ¿Red Sirius¿ and Dogon tribe stories. The final part (Chapters 12 and 13) highlights modern observations made with the Hubble Space Telescope and other spacecraft of the white dwarf companion.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 280 pp. Englisch.

Añadir al carritoTaschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware -Our motivation for writing this book was a dissatisfaction with the many books with titles hke Foundations of Statistics. These books provide a needed description of the subject with examples of various statistical methods; but they do not satisfy the discerning reader because they do not explain why certain conclusions may be drawn from certain data and they do not discuss how statistics, the subject, meshes with the scientific process. We naively set out to fill in these gaps, but the situation is not so simple. What is desired is a tool¿the one true statistics¿which can be applied to data with certainty to justify conclusions, but what is available, in fact, are various competing theories of statistics. The careful reader may correctly point out the relation of this manuscript to po- modem epistemology, a philosophy which emphasizes that all human knowing¿in fields as diverse as religion and science¿is culture dependent and that therefore 'truth' is not absolute. Take, for example, the 'truths' of Christianity and Islam¿ wars have been fought over their differences. In the field of statistics there are, for example, Bayesians and sampling theorists. Carson (2003) states, 'Surely it is better, postmodems tell us, to encourage insights that flow from many different perspectives. . . ' In statistics, postmodernism is manifest at two levels. First, the findings of statistical applications are not about the true state of nature but about models of experiments on nature.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 168 pp. Englisch.

Much of this attention, however, has revolved around trends in culture, art, food and music or pathological concerns about poverty, crime, drugs, and immigration. What have not been adequately addressed are the demographic trends affecting Latinos in the United States, Mexico, and Latin America, particularly the aging of the H- panic population and its resultant health and long-term care needs. That Latinos are living longer and shifting from a youthful population to an increasingly older cohort is little known, except among the small cadre of Hispanic gerontologists. Ironically, this invisibility of aging Hispanics is juxtaposed to the almost p- icked response of the U. S. media and public toward the aging of the general U. From thin films to field effect transistors, the emphasis is on reducing dimensions from the micro to the nanoscale. Fundamentals of Nanoscale Film Analysis concentrates on analysis of the structure and composition of the surface and the outer few tens to hundred nanometers in depth. It describes characterization techniques to quantify the structure, composition and depth distribution of materials with the use of energetic particles and photons. The book describes the fundamentals of materials characterization from the standpoint of the incident photons or particles which interrogate nanoscale structures. These induced reactions lead to the emission of a variety of detected of particles and photons. It is the energy and intensity of the detected beams that is the basis of the characterization of the materials. The array of experimental techniques used in nanoscale materials analysis covers a wide range of incident particle and detected beam interactions.Included are such important interactions as atomic collisions, Rutherford backscattering, ion channeling, diffraction, photon absorption, radiative and nonradiative transitions, and nuclear reactions. A variety of analytical and scanning probe microscopy techniques are presented in detail.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 352 pp. Englisch.

Yet while social theories are implied in today¿s public health arena, they are rarely acknowledged. Now an international panel of leaders in world health explores this vital but understudied aspect of health promotion.Health and Modernity proceeds from the thesis that contemporary health promotion is, by definition, inextricably linked to its social context. The authors discuss global challenges in terms of cultural capital, risk and causality, systems theory, and the dynamic between individual and community. In the process, they define an entity that: Understands the centrality of health to all areas of human life Is committed to equity in access to health-promoting resources Applies a multidisciplinary approach to public concerns Looks beyond quick fixes and simple answers to complex issues Employs a variety of political and social agents to accomplish health objectives Is dedicated to empowerment, facilitation, and inclusivenessThe insights found in Health and Modernity are certain to raise the level of debate among professionals, researchers, and the academic community in the global/public health and health promotion fields. Neuware - Prior to the evolution of modern medicine, with its superabundance of diagnostic and therapeutic medical technology and the rise of the litigious society, the value of clinical skills was evident in both history taking and the physical examination. Even today, physicians can make a correct di- nosis solely by utilizing their clinical skills in about 90% of patient enco- ters. Furthermore, in the past physicians understood their role as a 'psychologist' and were more apt to be familiar with the social context of their patients. House calls were common. The doctor was also a 'placebo' who, at his best, inspired hope and probably sped recovery. Geriatricians use both clinical skills and take advantage of modern technology sparingly, for they know they are dealing with the most ch- lenging and frail of patients-older patients who so often present with multiple, complex, interacting behavioral, social, and physical problems. In contrast to medicine for young people, working with the older patient is much more demanding. Furthermore, the complex issue of societal at- tudes toward old people can come into play, speci cally the physician's need to deal with natural fears of aging, dependency, depression, dementia, and death. Ageism is the enemy of effective medical treatment. At its best, geriatrics exempli es ways that medical care for all ages can become more humane, problem-oriented, and holistic.

Neuware -Fuel cell science and technology is evolving fast for the past two decades as it is thought to be an efficient way of transforming chemical energy of hydrogen rich compounds to electrical energy. Although this idea of direct conversion of chemical energy to electrical energy was first demonstrated by Sir William Grove in 1839 using a fuel cell, it was only in the middle of the twentieth century when Bacon's pioneering work led to the use of fuel cell in space missions. The interest in commercialization of fuel cell for civilian use has caught up with government organizations and private corporations for the past decade on account of fluctuating oil prices and environmental concerns. It is well known that the conventional fossil fuel, which is a primary source of gasoline, is not going to last more than a hundred years in the face of ever-increasing demand in the developed and developing countries. Although the reserves of natural gas, coal and tar sands may last another two to three hundred years with the current rate of production, their conversion is not efficient and pollution-free. Thus, scientists all over the world have taken up fuel cell development work in their quest of solution to the energy crises looming largely on global population. This book aims to script the present status of the rapidly developing field of fuel cell science and technology.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 388 pp. Englisch.

Añadir al carritoBuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware -Dendritic cells play the most vital part in inducing anti-viral immune responses in HIV and AIDS among many other viruses. Research on dendritic cells (DCs) is emerging as a fundamental aspect for the comprehension of the mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of viral diseases as well as for the progress on the development of prophylactic and therapeutic vaccines. This volume focuses on the role of DCs in the pathogenesis and immunity of HIV-1 infection. It has recently been clarified that DCs are important targets and reservoirs of HIV and may play an important role in virus spreading to T cells. Interestingly, HIV can exploit many of the cellular processes responsible for the generation and regulation of the adaptive immune responses to gain access to its main target cells, i.e. the CD4+ T lymphocytes. Thus, the central role of DCs in stimulating T cell activation not only provides a route for viral transmission, but also represents a vulnerable point at which HIV-1 can interfere with the initiation of primary T cell immunity.Recent studies have revealed that several HIV proteins can profoundly influence the phenotype and functions of DCs even in the absence of a productive infection, often resulting in an abnormal immune response. While this knowledge has resulted in the identification of some major mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of HIV-1 infection, the recent progress on DC biology has opened perspectives in the research on new adjuvants (selectively acting on DCs) and on novel strategies for the in vivo targeting of antigens to DCs, which appear to be highly relevant for the development of HIV vaccines. Of note, defects in the number and functions of DCs have been observed in the course of HIV infection and during disease progression, thus suggesting that DCs play an important role in the immune control of viral replication and virus-induced dysfunctions. The development of therapeutic vaccination strategies to be combined with HAART is thought as an important step for an effective control of HIV infection in patients. In this context, the use of autologous DCs may represent an attracting strategy. Notably, DCs are now regarded as a valuable approach for the development of cancer vaccines and several clinical trials have explored the efficacy of different DC preparations as cellular adjuvants in inducing a potentially protective immune response. Recent data in animal models provide the background for the clinical testing of DC-based vaccines in HIV-1-infected patients. Now that we start to understand the complex interactions between HIV and DCs in the pathogenesis of AIDS and we are learning how to prepare potentially effective DCs from lessons on cancer vaccines, we may reasonably assume that DC-based therapeutic vaccines can represent a topic of increasing interest in protocols of clinical immunotherapy of HIV-1-infected patients.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 576 pp. Englisch.

Correct methods for computing the precision of the survey data and for making inferences to the target population are absolutely essential to sound decision making. Now in its second edition, Introduction to Variance Estimation has for more than twenty years provided the definitive account of the theory and methods for correct precision calculations and inference, including examples of modern, complex surveys in which the methods have been used successfully. The book provides instruction on the methods that are vital to data-driven decision making in business, government, and academe. It will appeal to survey statisticians and other scientists engaged in the planning and conduct of survey research, and to those analyzing survey data and charged with extracting compelling information from such data. It will appeal to graduate students and university faculty who are focused on the development of new theory and methods and on the evaluation of alternative methods. Software developers concerned with creating the computer tools necessary to enable sound decision-making will find it essential.Prerequisites include knowledge of the theory and methods of mathematical statistics and graduate coursework in survey statistics. Practical experience with real surveys is a plus and may be traded off against a portion of the requirement for graduate coursework. This second edition reflects shifts in the theory and practice of sample surveys that have occurred since the content of the first edition solidified in the early 1980¿s. Additional replication type methods appeared during this period and have featured prominently in journal publications. Reflecting these developments, the second edition now includes a new major chapter on the bootstrap method of variance estimation. This edition also includes extensive new material on Taylor series methods, especially as they apply to newer methods of analysis such as logistic regression or the generalized regression estimator. An introductory section on survey weighting has been added. Sections on Hadamard matrices and computer software have been substantially scaled back. Fresh material on these topics is now readily available on the Internet or from commercial sources.Kirk Wolter is a Senior Fellow at NORC, Director of the Center for Excellency in Survey Research, and Professor in the Department of Statistics, University of Chicago. He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and a Member of the International Statistical Institute. He is a past president of the International Association of Survey Statisticians and a past chair of the Survey Research Methods Section of the American Statistical Association. Genetic mutation studies have been instrumental in providing insight into some of the mechanisms involved in targeting CSR to various switch DNA regions located upstream of C region genes, especially a role of AID motifs, transcription, and R-loops. Recent studies support a dominant role of receptor editing in central B cell tolerance and signaling pathways that regulate receptor editing in self-reactive and non-self-reactive immature B cells. These were some of the topics of discussion at the 11th International Conference on B cell Biology. These proceedings highlight recent developments in lymphocyte development, Ig gene rearrangements and somatic hypermutation, chromatin structure modification, B lymphocyte signaling and fate, receptor editing, and autoimmunity.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 208 pp. Englisch.

Neuware - This is the third and final volume of a three volumes book series devoted to photorefractive effects, photorefractive materials and their applications. Since the publication of our first two Springer books on 'Photorefractive Materials and Their Applications' (Topics in Applied Physics, Vols 61 and 62) almost 20 years ago a lot of research has been done in this area. New and often unexpected effects have been discovered, theoretical models developed, known effects could be finally explained and novel applications had been proposed. We believe that the field has now reached a high level of maturity, even if research continues in all areas mentioned above and with new discoveries arriving quite regularly. We therefore have decided to invite some of the top experts in the field to put together the state of the art in their respective fields. This after we had been encouraged to do so for more than ten years by the publisher, due to the fact that the former volumes were out of print since long time. The first volume is devoted to the description of the basic effects leading to photoinduced refractive index changes in electro-optical materials. In the second volume the status of the most recent developments in the field of photorefractive materials is reviewed and the parameters, which govern the photorefractive nonlinearity are highlighted. This third volume deals with the applications of the photorefractive effects and of materials. Starting about 35 years ago the attractivity of the photorefractive effect for data storage, for optical metrology, optical signal processing and nonlinear optical applications has been recognized. One of the main reasons for this is the large nonlinearity or refractive index change, which can be induced by low light intensities by using the photoinduced space-charge fields in electro-optical materials. Many new concepts have been demonstrated in the laboratories over all these years. Several of these concepts have been proved useful also in other areas of nonlinear optics. Particularly interesting was the observation of a large energy from pump beams to the signal beam in two- and fourwave mixing experiments. This effects lead to coherent amplification of a waveform covering spatial information and to self-pumped optical phase conjugation with applications in the area of wavefront correction of self-induced optical resonators. In this third volume a series of applications of photorefractive nonlinear optics and of optical data storage are presented in several chapters. This and the other two volumes on photorefractive effects, materials and applications have been prepared mainly for researchers in the field, but also for physics, engineering and materials science students. Several chapters contain sufficient introductory material for those not so familiar with the topic to obtain a thorough understanding of the photorefractive effect. We hope that for researchers active in the field these books should provide a useful reference source for their work.

Neuware - The genesis of this project is a direct result of the fact that there is no substantive textbook that addresses the full-spectrum of surgical emergencies. Even in a eld in which there is a plethora of excellent textbooks on a variety of surgical topics (including trauma), there is no one reference book with a dedicated emphasis on both traumatic and nontraumatic conditions potentially necessitating surgical int- vention in the acute setting. This project became even more unique when its st- wise development paralleled the evolution of a new specialty-acute care surgery. This was far from a serendipitous link.On the contrary,my editorial colleagues and I, along with many of the contributors, have recently been part of a major effort to build the foundation for this new specialty. As with any proposed new specialty, there have been a few rough interfaces with some of the other surgical specialties regarding the scope of practice of the acute care surgeon. Fortunately, the key to this con ict resolution will revolve around what is best for the patient. However, irrespective of these dynamics, there is a worsening crisis in acute care in this nation.

It will be a complete chronological log of all attempted orbital manned spaceflights, including the X-15 'astroflights' of the 1960s that only achieved an altitude of c. 50 miles and the two 1961 Mercury and Redstone missions which were non-orbital. There will be an image depicting each manned spaceflight, and data boxes containing brief biographies of all the space travellers and basic flight data. The main text will be a narrative of each mission, its highlights and accomplishments, including those strange facts and humorous stories that are connected to every mission.By targeting publication in September 2006, the return to flight of the Shuttle, two more Soyuz TMA launches and, quite possibly, a second Chinese manned mission. The resulting book will be a handy reference to all manned spaceflights, the names astronauts and cosmonauts who flew on each mission, and their roles and accomplishments. Recent announcements of a return to the Moon and eventual manned flights to Mars, as new hardware and procedures are developed to support these long-range programs, emphasizes the case for future updates of this book. 830 pp. Englisch.

Linking Restoration and Ecological Succession integrates practical information from restoration projects around the world with the latest developments in successional theory. This innovative book recognizes the critical roles of disturbance ecology, landscape ecology, ecological assembly, invasion biology, ecosystem health, and historical ecology in habitat restoration and argues that restoration within a successional context will best utilize the lessons from each of these disciplines. To successfully restore an ecosystem that needs minimal care, the temporal dynamics of successional processes must be considered. By re-examining restoration in the light of succession, the authors hope to encourage the development of new approaches to the practice of restoration supported by solid ecological principles. 188 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The Physics of Automatic Target Recognition is part of a series focusing on Advanced Sciences and Technologies for Security Applications. This book will address the fundamental physical bases of sensing, and information extraction in the state-of-the art automatic target recognition field. We will explore both passive and active multispectral sensing, polarimetric diversity, complex signature exploitation, sensor and processing adaptation, transformation of electromagnetic and acoustic waves in their interactions with targets, background clutter, transmission media, and sensing elements. The general inverse scattering, and advanced signal processing techniques and scientific evaluation methodologies being used in this multi disciplinary field will be part of this exposition. The issues of modeling of target signatures in various spectral modalities, LADAR, IR, SAR, high resolution radar, acoustic, seismic, visible, hyperspectral, in diverse geometric aspects will be addressed. The problem of clutter modeling from a physics point of view will be also explored. The methods for signal processing and classification will cover concepts such as sensor adaptive and artificial neural networks, time reversal filter. The issue of invariants of sensor and transmission transformations (geometrical, spectral and polarimetric invariants) will be explored . These invariants are crucial in the development of low latency and computationally manageable ATR systems. The book will address the issue of transformations that a signal goes through in its interactions with targets and background, in its passage through a medium and its final reception by a sensor. It is only through understanding these transformations that one can hope in addressing the inverse problem: the identification of originating sources of a signal (target recognition).Advanced Sciences and Technologies for Security Applications focuses on research monographs in the areas of-Recognition and identification (including optical imaging, biometrics, authentication, verification, and smart surveillance systems)-Biological and chemical threat detection (including biosensors, aerosols, materials detection and forensics)-Secure information systems (including encryption, and optical and photonic systems). The series is intended to give an overview at the highest research level at the frontier of research in the physical sciences. 250 pp. Englisch.
