Modern simulation tools are not used only by experts, however, and reliability has therefore become an important issue, meaning that it is not sufficient for a simulation package merely to print out some numbers, claiming them to be the desired results. An estimate of the associated error is also needed. The errors may derive from many sources: errors in the model, errors in discretization, rounding errors, etc. Unfortunately, this situation does not obtain for current packages and there is a great deal of room for improvement. Only if the error can be estimated is it possible to do something to reduce it. Popkin in Marsh's Library on July 7-8, 1994. It was one of the most stimulating events held in the Library in recent years. Although we have hosted many special seminars on such subjects as rare books, the Huguenots, and Irish church history, this was the first time that a seminar was held which was specifically related to the books in our own collection. It seems surprising that this type of seminar has never been held before although the reason is obvious. Since there is no printed catalogue of the Library scholars are not aware of its contents. In fact the collection of books by late seventeenth and early eighteenth century European authors on, for example, such subjects as biblical criticism, political and religious controversy, is one of the richest parts of the Library's collections. The workshop was one of the fIrst meetings held on the flexibility mechanisms after the Kyoto Protocol had been accepted at the Third Conference of the Parties (CoP3) in Kyoto, Japan, in December 1997. During the workshop it became clear that during the stage of translating the Protocol provisions on the flexibility mechanisms (notably Articles 6, 12 and 17) into concrete action, there are still many questions on how to interpret the scope and meaning of the Protocol text precisely. Indeed, various issues need to be elaborated on before a full assessment of the future practical work - the start of CDM and JI projects and possibly international emissions trading - can be made. Neuware -The Feynman integral is considered as an intuitive representation of quantum mechanics showing the complex quantum phenomena in a language comprehensible at a classical level. It suggests that the quantum transition amplitude arises from classical mechanics by an average over various interfering paths. The classical picture suggested by the Feynman integral may be illusory. By most physicists the path integral is usually treated as a convenient formal mathematical tool for a quick derivation of useful approximations in quantum mechanics. Results obtained in the formalism of Feynman integrals receive a mathematical justification by means of other (usually much harder) methods. In such a case the rigour is achieved at the cost of losing the intuitive classical insight. The aim of this book is to formulate a mathematical theory of the Feynman integral literally in the way it was expressed by Feynman, at the cost of complexifying the configuration space. In such a case the Feynman integral can be expressed by a probability measure. The equations of quantum mechanics can be formulated as equations of random classical mechanics on a complex configuration space. The opportunity of computer simulations shows an immediate advantage of such a formulation.
