Johnson, Letter to William Drummond August 13, 1776 The therapeutic effectiveness an…d safety of beta-adrenergic blocking drugs has been well established in patients with essential hypertension and arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease. These drugs are useful in primary protection against cardiovascular morbidity or mortality in patients with essential hypertension and secondary protection (mor bidity and mortality in patients with myocardial infarction). Although there are mass action effects common to all of beta-adrenergic block ing agents, these agents differ in their effects on the RAS system, beta blockade, norepinephrine release, CNS effects, peripheral vas cular resistance, inotrophic effects, vasomotor effects, and effects on plasma volume. Dr. Ton J. M. Cleophas has addressed this problem of different com pounds and different strategies in the use of beta-adrenergic blockers. In Chapter 1 of this book the author deals with the problem of paradoxical pressor responses from non cardioselective beta blockade. Chapter 2 deals with a review of the literature dealing with these pressor responses which are usually thought to be mild and occur in situations of increased sympathetic activity (57 references). Chapter 3 deals with the benefi cial effects of alpha blockade in Raynaud's Syndrome, and the effect of beta blockade in counteracting the alpha blocker side effects of fluid retention and tachycardia. 100 pp. Englisch.

During the meeting it was felt that the contribu tions to the Symposium…justified a volume presenting its main scientific achievements. The present title of the volume shows that the center of inter est has slightly shifted with respect to the initial objective: in order to under stand the processes involved in accretion taking place at oceanic ridges, it is crucial to study the interaction between uppermost mantle and lower crust. The approach favored here is that of petrological and structural analysis of oceanic rocks in present-day oceanic ridges combined with similar studies in ophiolites. Rock specimen collected by submersibles or dredge hauls in oceanic ridge environments provide a 'ground truth'. However, except for areas such as the MARK (Mid-Atlantic Ridge ne ar Kane fracture zone) where, thanks to multiple submersible dives, the local geology is known with aprecision even better than in many onshore ophiolites, mutual rela tionships between uppermost mantle and lower crust are poorly known. In contrast, onshore ophiolites provide a necessary large-scale picture built up over many years of structural and petrological mapping. 224 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -This volume contains several surveys focused on the ideas of approximate solutions, well-posedness and stability of problems in scalar and vector optimization, game theory and calculus of variations. These concepts are of particular interest i…n many fields of mathematics. The idea of stability goes back at least to J. Hadamard who introduced it in the setting of differential equations; the concept of well-posedness for minimum problems is more recent (the mid-sixties) and originates with A.N. Tykhonov. It turns out that there are connections between the two properties in the sense that a well-posed problem which, at least in principle, is 'easy to solve', has a solution set that does not vary too much under perturbation of the data of the problem, i.e. it is 'stable'. These themes have been studied in depth for minimum problems and now we have a general picture of the related phenomena in this case. But, of course, the same concepts can be studied in other more complicated situations as, e.g. vector optimization, game theory and variational inequalities. The point of departure is the notion of the left spectrum of an associative ring, and the first natural steps of general theory of noncommutative affine, quasi-affine, and projective schemes. This material is presented in Chapter I. Further developments originated from the requirements of several important examples I tried to understand, to begin with the first Weyl algebra and the quantum plane. The book reflects these developments as I worked them out in reallife and in my lectures. Applications of the quantitative approach are also reviewed in the concluding chapters that deal with decision support systems, breeding and agro-ecological zoning. An outstanding point of this book is that both the crop ecology and the modelling of a broad range of biotic and abiotic factors are treated by scientists representing groups which are specialized in the subject. The two related disciplines met during the conference and thus wrote the chapters with each other's interest in mind. The success of this theory in the single operator case inspired attempts to create a general theory in the much more complicated case of several commuting operators with finite-dimensional imaginary parts. During the past 10-15 years such a theory has been developed, yielding fruitful connections with algebraic geometry and sys tem theory. Our purpose in this book is to formulate the basic problems appearing in this theory and to present its main results. It was introduced by Walter Baade after he was able to resolve the Andromeda Nebula and its companions into stars when he used re…d-sensitive plates and realised that there were two fundamentally different Herzsprung-Russell diagrams in our and these nearby galaxies (common stars in the solar neighborhood versus globular clusters). This result was published in two papers in 1944 in volume 100 of the Astrophysical Journal. Subsequent research gave the concept a much firmer basis and at the famous Vatican Symposium of 1957 resulted in a general scheme of the concept and a working hypothesis for idea's on the formation and evolution of the Galaxy. This has been a guiding principle of studies of our and other galaxies for decades. Some years ago it seemed to us appropriate to commemorate Baade's seminal work in 1994, when it would have its 50-th anniversary, and to review its present status and also its role in contempory understanding. While we were in Leiden for an administrative committee, we discussed the matter again and over beers on October 29, 1991 we decided the take the initiative for an IAU Symposium on the subject during the 1994 IAU General Assembly in Den Haag, the Netherlands. 496 pp. Englisch.

These concepts are of particular intere…st in many fields of mathematics. The idea of stability goes back at least to J. Hadamard who introduced it in the setting of differential equations; the concept of well-posedness for minimum problems is more recent (the mid-sixties) and originates with A.N. Tykhonov. It turns out that there are connections between the two properties in the sense that a well-posed problem which, at least in principle, is 'easy to solve', has a solution set that does not vary too much under perturbation of the data of the problem, i.e. it is 'stable'. These themes have been studied in depth for minimum problems and now we have a general picture of the related phenomena in this case. But, of course, the same concepts can be studied in other more complicated situations as, e.g. vector optimization, game theory and variational inequalities. Let us mention that in several of these new areas there is not even a unique idea of what should be called approximate solution, and the latter is at the basis of the definition of well posed problem. 280 pp. Englisch.
