When the physical problem is studied, the mathematical proofs…are either not given or are quickly explained. In this book, we give a systematic treatment of the partial differential equations which arise in elastostatic problems. In particular, we study problems which are obtained from asymptotic expansion with two scales. Here the methods of operator pencils and differential-operator equations are used. This book is intended for scientists and graduate students in Functional Analy sis, Differential Equations, Equations of Mathematical Physics, and related topics. It would undoubtedly be very useful for mechanics and theoretical physicists. We would like to thank Professors S. Yakubov and S. Kamin for helpfull dis cussions of some parts of the book. The work on the book was also partially supported by the European Community Program RTN-HPRN-CT-2002-00274. xiii INTRODUCTION In first two sections of the introduction, a classical mathematical problem will be exposed: the Laplace problem. The domain of definition will be, on the first time, an infinite strip and on the second time, a sector. To solve this problem, a well known separation of variables method will be used. In this way, the structure of the solution can be explicitly found. For more details about the separation of variables method exposed in this part, the reader can refer to, for example, the book by D. Leguillon and E. Sanchez-Palencia [LS]. 232 pp. Englisch.

The tirst seminar was a four-day scientific event on Governance Structures in Higher Education Institutions. The seminar was held along the banks of the Douro River, Portugal, on 13-17 October 2001. The second seminar focused on the Emergence of Managerialism in Higher Education Institutions and took place at the same location on 4-9 October 2002. The theme of the third seminar is Markets in Higher Education to be held 2-6 October 2003. The release of genetically modified (GM) mosquitoes may offer… an alternative strategy to do so while circumventing the pitfalls of current vector control methods. Current methodologies are stalling because of drug resistance, absence of vaccines and inadequate mosquito control techniques. GM mosquitoes have been developed that are resistant to pathogen infection and transmission, but the public-health and environmental consequences of releasing such insects are unclear, mainly because of a lack of knowledge of the ecology and population biology of mosquitoes. This book is the reflection of a workshop, held in June 2002, that addressed these issues. Experts on mosquito ecology met for the first time to discuss the current knowledge of mosquito ecology with respect to GM-insect technology. Emphasis of the workshop was on evaluating how human health and natural ecosystems, including target wild-mosquito populations, will respond to the invasion of GM vectors. On the one hand there are treatises that attempt to cover all or most aspects of the subject, and where an attempt is made to give all results in their best possible form, together with… either a full proof or a sketch of the proof together with references to where a full proof can be found. Such books, aimed at the professional pure and applied mathematician, are rare. The first such, that brought some order to this untidy field, is the classical 'Inequalities' of Hardy, Littlewood & P6lya, published in 1934. Important as this outstanding work was and still is, it made no attempt at completeness; rather it consisted of the total knowledge of three front rank mathematicians in a field in which each had made fundamental contributions. Extensive as this combined knowledge was there were inevitably certain lacunre; some important results, such as Steffensen's inequality, were not mentioned at all; the works of certain schools of mathematicians were omitted, and many important ideas were not developed, appearing as exercises at the ends of chapters. The later book 'Inequalities' by Beckenbach & Bellman, published in 1961, repairs many of these omissions. However this last book is far from a complete coverage of the field, either in depth or scope. 568 pp. Englisch.
