This has significant implications for bioethics, implications that have not previously been developed. With this volume, `the ethics of diagnosis' is established as an important branch of bioethics.

Optimization of the computerize…d solution process is now a major problem of applied mathematics, which stimulates the search for new computational methods and ways to implement them. In Minimax Models in the Theory of Numerical Methods, methods for estimating the efficiency of computational algorithms and problems of their optimality are studied within the framework of a general computation model. The subjects dealt with in this important book are very different from the traditional subjects of computational methods. Close attention is paid to adaptive (sequential) computational algorithms, the process of computation being regarded as a controlled process and the algorithm as a control strategy. This approach allows methods of game theory and othermethods of operations research and systems analysis to be widely used for constructing optimal algorithms. The goal underlying the study of the various computation models dealt with in this title is the construction of concrete numerical algorithms admitting program implementation. The central role belongs to the concept of a sequentially optimal algorithm, which in many cases reflects the characteristics of real-life computational processes more fully than the traditional optimality concepts. 276 pp. Englisch.

By tracing the narrative of the `crisis' from Husserl's early treatment of arithmetic and logic through to Heidegger's meditations on the essence of technology, the author not only proposes a unified reading of both Husserl's and Heidegger's work, but points to important elements of the often underplayed continuity between these phenomenologists. At the same time, the concept of `crisis' also illustrates the difference between Husserl and Heidegger. Though both define the crisis as one of `forgetting', and both view this `forgetting' as a matter of philosophical responsibility, essential divergence emerges in their interpretation of this phenomenon. Three questions uncover these points of convergence and divergence. First, does not the `forgetfulness' reveal itself as a type of felix culpa, a necessary decay that now reveals itself in a positive light, indeed, as the precondition of history itself Second, what is presupposed when the subjects is held responsible for forgetting Third, what are the political consequences of such `crisis'-philosophy This last question allows access not only to hidden political aspects of Husserl's thought, but opens a further perspective for considering Heidegger's overt political activities. Husserl, Heidegger and the Crisis of Philosophical Responsibility reveals the presuppositions about history, the subject, and the subject's relationship to a community that lie at the heart of any `crisis-thinking'. While demonstrating in scholarly fashion that the notion of `crisis' forms a hermeneutical key to the work of both Husserl and Heidegger, this work also grapples with questions of considerable contemporary significance: for what is philosophy `responsible' in this age of the crisis of reason, and in a broader sense, what does it mean to be `responsible' for that which we do not fully control The author's suggestion of a `non-calculative' philosophical responsibility moves away from any notion of philosophical `crisis-management', while still maintaining that philosophy can have practical effects and that certain elements of the Husserlian plea for philosophical responsibility retain their value. 324 pp. Englisch.

He edited this collection of lectures in chemistry by H.T. Scheffer and published it in 1775. It was probably the first book designed to be used as a textbook for univer…sity classes in chemistry. Bergman presented the first of his successively improved Tables of Elective Attractions in this book, a table of the chemical elements which was one of the earliest attempts to present all the chemical elements and their properties in a single table. This table preceded the modern periodic table of the elements by nearly a century. It is of basis of this table that Bergman is considered to be the father of physical chemistry. One of the many discoveries described in this book is Scheffer's `Pelican Experiment'. which disproved the transmutation of elements, and preceded by two decades the identical experiment carried out by Antoine Lavoisier. This book will be of interest to historians of science and chemists in particular. Scientists in general and educators will also be interested to read this book.
