The project started in 1990 and was planned to be compl…eted fifteen years later. lt is now clearly ahead of schedule. But even when the project is completed much work remains-the analysis of the function of the 30-40,000 genes in the human genome is beyond the scope of the project and willlast for decades. However, even before the HGP started, it was rather controversial from an ethical point of view; not so much because of the sequencing work as such, but because of its anticipated consequences. The results of the project might be used, for example, in developing genetic tests, genetically tailor-made drugs, and gene therapies. Some people fear that genetic testing may lead to discrimination in insurance and at the workplace. Some view the pharmaceutical companies' research on genetically tailor-made drugs as an unacceptable commercialization of science. Some anticipate that the development of gene therapy will give rise to a society in which parents want to design perfect babies with genetic enhancement techniques.

The functional importance of a number of genes has undoubtedly been proven with the help of transgenic animals. Based on this evidence we develop a theory of superconductivity in conventional and mate- als from a unified point of view. Following Bardeen, Cooper and Schrieffer (BCS) we regard the phonon exchange attraction as the cause of superc- ductivity. For cuprate superconductors, however, we take account of both optical- and acoustic-phonon exchange. BCS started with a Hamiltonian containing 'electron' and 'hole' kinetic energies and a pairing interaction with the phonon variables eliminated. These 'electrons' and 'holes' were introduced formally in terms of a free-electron model, which we consider unsatisfactory. We define 'electrons' and 'holes' in terms of the cur- tures of the Fermi surface. 'Electrons' (1) and 'holes' (2) are different and so they are assigned with different effective masses: Blatt, Schafroth and Butler proposed to explain superconductivity in terms of a Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) of electron pairs, each having mass M and a size.
