However, actual systems subject to control do not admit a strictly deterministic analysis in view of random factors of various kinds which influence their behavior. Such factors include, for example, random noise occurring in the electrical system, variations in the supply and demand of commodities, fluctuations in the labor force in economics, and random failures of components on an automated line. The theory of con trolled processes takes the random nature of the behavior of a system into account. In such cases it is natural, when choosing a control strategy, to proceed from the average expected result, taking note of all the possible variants of the behavior of a controlled system. That year, Harold Hotelling's widow had donated the collection of his private p:;tpers, correspondence and manuscripts to the Butler Library, Columbia Universi…ty. This is a most appropriate place for them to reside, in that Hotelling's most productive period as an active researcher in eco nomics and statistics coincides with the years when he was Professor of Mathematical Economics at Columbia (1931-1946). The Hotelling Collection comprises some 13,000 separate items and contains numerous unpublished letters and manuscripts of great importance to historians of economics and statistics. In the course of the following year I was able, with the generous financial assistance of the Nuffield Foundation, the Economic and Social Research Council, the British Academy and the University of Durham, to spend six weeks over the Easter period working on the collection. I returned to New York in September 1986 while on sabbatical leave from the University of Durham, and I spent most of the following eight months examining the many documents in the collection. For some social scientists, they became part of a br…oader discussion concerning the need for new analytical techniques for research based on longitudinal data. In 1976, the Social Science Research Council (SSRC), with funds from the National Institute of Education, established a Committee on the Methodology of Longitudinal Research. (The scholars who comprised this committee are listed at the front of this volume. ) As part of the efforts of this Committee, an interdisciplinary conference on cohort analysis was held in the summer of 1979, in Snowmass, Colorado. Much of the work presented here stems from that conference, the purpose of which was to promote the development of general methodological tools for the study of social change. The author's treatment is 'classical', i.e., employing classical analysis. Classical calculus of variations, the complex variables approach, and the Kolosov Muskhelishvili theory are the basic techniques used. He derives many results that are of interest to practical structural engineers, such as optimum designs of structural elements submerged in a flowing fluid (which is of obvious interest in aircraft design, in ship building, in designing turbines, etc.). Optimization with incomplete information concerning the loads (which is the case in a great majority of practical design considerations) is treated thoroughly. ' The study of discrete event dynamical systems (DEDS) has become rapidly popular among researchers in systems and control, in communication networks, in manufacturing, and in distributed computing. This development has created problems for re searchers and potential 'consumers' of the research. The first problem is the veritable Babel of languages, formalisms, and approaches, which makes it very difficult to determine the commonalities and distinctions among the competing schools of approaches. The second, related, problem arises from the different traditions, paradigms, values, and experience that scholars bring to their study of DEDS, depending on whether they come from control, com munication, computer science, or mathematical logic. As a result, intellectual exchange among scholars becomes compromised by unexplicated assumptions. The purpose of the Workshop was to promote exchange among scholars representing some of the major 'schools' of thought in DEDS with the hope that (1) greater clarity will be achieved thereby, and (2) cross-fertilization will lead to more fruitful questions. I wrote the first two books for beginning graduate students with some knowledge of probability; if you can follow Sections 10.4 to 10.9 of Markov Chains you're in. The first two books are quite independent of one another, and completely independent of the third. This last book is a monograph which explains one way to think about chains with instantaneous states. The results in it are supposed to be new, except where there are specific disclaim ers; it's written in the framework of Markov Chains. Most of the proofs in the trilogy are new, and I tried hard to make them explicit. The old ones were often elegant, but I seldom saw what made them go. With my own, I can sometimes show you why things work. And, as I will VB1 PREFACE argue in a minute, my demonstrations are easier technically. The first problem consists of clarifying the conditions for mutual absolute continuity (equivalence) of probability distributions of a 'random process se…gment' and of finding effective formulas for densities of the equiva lent distributions. Our second problem is to describe the classes of spectral measures corresponding in some sense to regular stationary processes (in par ticular, satisfying the well-known 'strong mixing condition') as well as to describe the subclasses associated with 'mixing rate'. The third problem involves estimation of an unknown mean value of a random process, this random process being stationary except for its mean, i. e. , it is the problem of 'distinguishing a signal from stationary noise'. Furthermore, we give here auxiliary information (on distributions in Hilbert spaces, properties of sam ple functions, theorems on functions of a complex variable, etc. ). Since 1958 many mathematicians have studied the problem of equivalence of various infinite-dimensional Gaussian distributions (detailed and sys tematic presentation of the basic results can be found, for instance, in [23]). In this book we have considered Gaussian stationary processes and arrived, we believe, at rather definite solutions. In the mid 1950's, the theory of cyclotomic fields was taken up again by Iwasawa and Leopoldt. Iwasawa viewed cyclotomic fields as being analogues for number fields of the constant field extensions of algebraic geometry, and wrote a great sequence of papers investigating towers of cyclotomic fields, and more generally, Galois extensions of number fields whose Galois group is isomorphic to the additive group of p-adic integers. Leopoldt concentrated on a fixed cyclotomic field, and established various p-adic analogues of the classical complex analytic class number formulas. In particular, this led him to introduce, with Kubota, p-adic analogues of the complex L-functions attached to cyclotomic extensions of the rationals. Finally, in the late 1960's, Iwasawa [Iw 1 I] . made the fundamental discovery that there was a close connection between his work on towers of cyclotomic fields and these p-adic L-functions of Leopoldt-Kubota.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 272 pp. Englisch.

The spectral decomposition for this class of operators, which play a central role in the rest of the book and its consequences are introduced. At the end of the chapter, some classical operator inequalities are presented as well.Recent new results that deal with different aspects of the famous Jensen operator inequality are explored through the second chapter. These include but are not limited to the operator version of the Dragomir-Ionescu inequality, the Slater type inequalities for operators and its inverses, Jensen¿s inequality for twice differentiable functions whose second derivatives satisfy some upper and lower bound conditions and Jensen¿s type inequalities for log-convex functions. Hermite-Hadamard¿s type inequalities for convex functions and the corresponding results for operator convex functions are also presented.The ¿eby¿ev, (Chebyshev) inequality that compares the integral/discrete mean of the product with the product of the integral/discrete means is famous in the literature devoted to Mathematical Inequalities. The sister inequality due to Grüss which provides error bounds for the magnitudeof the difference between the integral mean of the product and the product of the integral means has also attracted much interest since it has been discovered in 1935 with more than 200 papers published so far. The last part of the book is devoted to the operator versions of these famous results for continuous functions of selfadjoint operators on complex Hilbert spaces. If, however, biographical material about these eminent statisticians was not gathered, then one might lose the chance to gain insight into the origins of many an important statistical development. The remarkable experience of these colleagues could not be readily duplicated. Fired by these thoughts, I took it upon myself to plan the framework of this book.
