Without such a 'bridge' course, most upper division instructors feel the need to start their courses with the rudiments of logic, set theory, equivalence relations, and other basic mathematical raw materials before getting on with the subject at hand. Students who are new to higher mathematics are often startled to discover that mathematics is a subject of ideas, and not just formulaic rituals, and that they are now expected to understand and create mathematical proofs. Mastery of an assortment of technical tricks may have carried the students through calculus, but it is no longer a guarantee of academic success. Students need experience in working with abstract ideas at a nontrivial level if they are to achieve the sophisticated blend of knowledge, disci pline, and creativity that we call 'mathematical maturity. ' I don't believe that 'theorem-proving' can be taught any more than 'question-answering' can be taught. The treatment of these notions appears here, in Chapter VII, for the first time in book form. The second feature consists in some not-so-easily-available nuptial delights that grew out of the marriage of topology and functional analysis; they are topics mainly courted by functional analysts and seldom given in topology books. Specifically, one knows that the set C(X) of all real- or com plex-valued continuous functions on a completely regular space X forms a locally convex topological algebra, a fortiori a topological vector space, in the compact-open topology. The field of optimal inputs has been an area of considerable research recently with important advances by R. Mehra, G. c. Goodwin, M. Aoki, and N. E. Nahi, to name just a few eminent in vestigators. The authors' interest in optimal inputs first developed when F. E. Yates, an eminent physiologist, expressed the need for optimal or preferred inputs to estimate physiological parameters. The text assumes no previous knowledge of optimal control theory, numerical methods for solving two-point boundary-value problems, or system identification. As such it should be of interest to students as well as researchers in control engineering, computer science, biomedical en gineering, operations research, and economics. In addition the sections on beam theory should be of special interest to mechanical and civil en gineers and the sections on eigenvalues should be of interest to numerical analysts. The authors have tried to present a balanced viewpoint; however, primary emphasis is on those methods in which they have had first-hand experience. Their work has been influenced by many authors. Special acknowledgment should go to those listed above as well as R. Bellman, A. Miele, G. A. Bekey, and A. P. Sage. At the turn of the nineteenth century, a number of observ…ations, made sporadically over the preceding years, began to inspire systematic investigations into the common features of these three disciplines, which have developed rather independently of each other for so long. It was found that many concepts of this triad-analysis, algebra, geometry-could be incorporated into a single, but considerably more abstract, new discipline which came to be called functional analysis. In this way, many aspects of analysis and algebra acquired unexpected and pro found geometric meaning, while geometric methods inspired new lines of approach in analysis and algebra. The techniques used in this paper have been föund useful in solving certain problems in the theory of open resonators. The topic of G. P. Astrakhantsev's paper is similar to that of the paper by V. M. Babich. Here also the parabolic-equation method is used to find the asymptotic solution of the elasticity equations which describes Love waves concentrated in a neighborhood of some surface ray. The paper of T. F. Pankratova is concerned with finding the asymptotic behavior of th~ eigenfunc tions of the Laplace operator from the exact solution for the surface of a triaxial ellipsoid and the re gion exterior to it. The first three papers of B. G. Nikolaev are somewhat apart from the central theme of the col lection; they treat the integral transforms with respect to associated Legendre functions of first kind and their applications. With the recent development of the digital computer, the range of applications… of mathematics, including the calculus, has increased greatly and now includes many disciplines that were formerly thought to be non quantitative. Some of the more traditional applications have been altered, by the presence of a computer, to an extent such that many problems hitherto felt to be intractable are now solvable. This book has been written as a reaction to events that have altered the applications of the calculus. The use of the computer is made possible at an early point, although the extent to which the computer is used in the course is subject to the decision of the instructor. Some less traditional applications are included in order to provide some insight into the breadth of problems that are now susceptible to mathematical solution. The Stieltjes integral is introduced to provide for easier transition from the stated problem to its mathematical formulation, and also to permit the use of functions like step functions in later courses (such as statistics) with relative ease. National Academy of Sciences who has made important contributions to physics and engineering, published a short article in the Proceedin…gs of the National Academy of Sciences entitled' A Mathe matical Aid in Optimizing Engineering Design. ' In this article Zener considered the problem of finding an optimal engineering design that can often be expressed as the problem of minimizing a numerical cost function, termed a 'generalized polynomial,' consisting of a sum of terms, where each term is a product of a positive constant and the design variables, raised to arbitrary powers. He observed that if the number of terms exceeds the number of variables by one, the optimal values of the design variables can be easily found by solving a set of linear equations. Furthermore, certain invariances of the relative contribution of each term to the total cost can be deduced. The mathematical intricacies in Zener's method soon raised the curiosity of R. J. Duffin, the distinguished mathematician from Carnegie Mellon University who joined forces with Zener in laying the rigorous mathematical foundations of optimizing generalized polynomials. Interes tingly, the investigation of optimality conditions and properties of the optimal solutions in such problems were carried out by Duffin and Zener with the aid of inequalities, rather than the more common approach of the Kuhn-Tucker theory.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 472 pp. Englisch.
