Its purpose is to investigate how these perceptions are organized in the minds of different groups of American adults, to find valid and efficient ways of measuring these percep tions, to suggest ways these measurement methods could be implemented to yield a series of social indicators, and to provide some initial readings on these indicators; i.e., some information about the levels of well-being perceived by Americans. The findings are based on data from more than five thousand Americans and include results from four separate representative samplings of the American population. One of the ways our research is unusual is that it includes a major methodological component. Typical surveys involve a modest effort at instru ment development, the application of the instrument to a group of respondents, and an analysis of the resulting data that mainly describes the people studied. Our work, however, was implemented in a series of sequential cycles, each of which consisted of conceptual development, instrument design, data collection, analysis, and interpretation. These diseases traditionally have been grouped together under the general term of cancer, without any scientific reason and irrespective of many differences existing between them. It has led to major revisions in concepts of cellular immunity and theories on the recovery of multicellular systems from viral infection. Since its discovery, interferon has held the interest of the molecular biologist, and definitive answers as to its clinical value are close at hand. The following treatise is an attempt by the authors to pre sent a complete picture of the many aspects of interferon. Having recently had the privilege of visiting the laboratories of the au thors and several others of our Soviet colleagues working in the interferon field, I was most impressed with the amount of research being done in this area. Because of the explosion of research into the anatomy, physiology, chemistry, and behavioral aspects of the hip pocampus, some means of synthesis of the results from these lines of research was called for. We first thought of a conference. In fact, officials in the National Institute of Mental Health suggested we organize such a conference on the hippocampus, but after a few tentative steps in this direction, interest at the federal level waned, probably due to the decreases in federal support for research in the basic health sciences so keenly felt in recent years. However, the editors also had come to the view that conferences are mainly valuable to the participants. The broad range of students (of all ages) of brain behavior relations do not profit from conference proceedings unless the proceedings are subsequently published. Furthermore, conferences dealing with the functional character of organ systems approached from many points of view are most successful after participants have become acquainted with each other's work. Human remains unearthed in Lancashire, England, dating from ap proximately 900 AD, show clear evidence of the aftliction. However, it was not until the 1800s that physicians rediscovered the condition, and a little more than 100 years ago that Sir James Paget published a perceptive and accurate description of the disease from the clinical and pathologic points of view. He felt the disease represented an inflammatory condition of the skeleton and hence named it osteitis deformans. The condition again lapsed into anonymity for several decades afterwards, and therapeutic approaches did not evolve until after World War II when several groups, located mainly in the Boston area, began using a variety of agents, includ ing corticosteroids for treatment of this condition. These early attempts at therapy were unsuccessful and the condition remained essentially untreat able until the development of the calcitonins and the bisphosphonates in the 1970s. In 1978, the Paget's Disease Foundation, a private nonprofit volun tary health agency, was founded to assist individuals aftlicted by Paget's disease of bone, to provide education regarding this condition to the medical community, and to encourage research efforts to better under stand and treat the condition. The origin of this meeting goes back to 1982 when the organizers met at the GANIL laboratory in Caen, France which had just started accelerating argon ions at 44 MeV per nucleon. We then realized that 1984 should be the appropriate time to review the first results obtained with such new kinds of facilities. The material contained in this volume, presenting many beautiful re sults on nuclei at high excitation, fully confirms this point. Many stimulating exchanges between experts in rather diffe rent fields already took place during the school and we hope that this cross fertilization will lead to further developments. About half of the present volume is also devoted to the field of relativistic heavy ion collisions, which is now expanding rapidly. As an illustration, let us recall that the construction of a 30 on 30 GeV per nucleon collider at Brookhaven has been recognized last year as one cf the major priorities by the US Nuclear Science Advisory Committee. The authors noted that such a high value of the phosphorylation coefficient suggests a fundamental difference in the mechanisms of A TP formation coupled with respiration, and glycolysis, since in the latter case, the amount of the ATP synthesized is equal to that of the substrate utilized. A lot of hypothetical schemes were put forward to explain the nature of coupling between electron transfer and phosphorylation, but none of them solved the problem. Only quite recently, one hypo thetical scheme of energy coupling, viz. Mitchell's chemiosmotic concept, 2.3 was supported by experimental data which allow us to prefer it to alternative possibilities. D. P. Burkitt, who has been in the forefront of this investigation, has included among the 'diseases of civilization' hiatus hernia, ischemic heart disease, cholelithiasis, polyps of the colon, and cancer of the colon. All of these conditions appear to have the same geographic distribution. In these areas, the diets were characterized by increased amounts of fat and meat protein, and by an apparent deficit of fiber. It is noteworthy that while an increased intake of refined sugars also has been implicated in the Western diet, the consumption of sugar and other sweetners in the United States actually has remained fairly stable since about 1925 when the use of complex carbohydrates in the form of starchy foods began to decline. The mechanism whereby deficiency of fiber in the diet contributes to the development of colonic diverticula, presumably is by facilitating the development of segmentation of the colon and pockets of intracolonic high pressure zones associated with prolonged transit time of bowel content. Preliminary therapeutic observations, furthermore, have suggested that the addition of fiber in the form of bran to the diet may promote regularity of bowel function and perhaps lessen the likelihood that new diver ticula will be formed after the resection of involved colonic segments. 196 pp. Englisch.

Quasielastic light scattering (also called self-beating spectroscopy or intensity correlation spectroscopy) is the technique, introduced by Benedek and coworkers and by Cummins and coworkers about 15 years ago, by which dynamical information about a scattering medium is obtained through the measurement of the power spectrum (or the intensity correlation function) of the laser light scattered from the medium. The technique received in the early seventies a considerable impulse from the development of real-time fast digital correlators. The aim of the Workshop was to bring together a selected number of researchers in order to discuss recent developments in quasielastic light scattering and related optical methods and to report about new applications of the technique in physics, chemistry and biology. Historically, carrier systems have been chosen on the basis of selective affinity for target sites. For instance, monoclonal antibodies bind selectively to antigens on the surface of cells and the same applies to ligands such as certain glycoproteins which bind to cell receptors. The under standing of molecular mechanisms of replication and their regulation should allow a better comprehension of the alterations that lead to the proliferation of tumor cells and to error-prone repair in cells exposed to radiation or chemical carcinogens. During the last several years, many enzymes and proteins which participate in replication of DNA in eukaryotic cells have been identified, isolated and characterized. New concepts in chromatin structure have refocused attention on the study of replication of DNA complexed with his tones and non-histone chromosomal proteins. However, progress has been noticeably slower than for prokaryotes, essentially because of the difficulty in genetic analysis of eukaryo tic DNA replication. The discovery of the virus two decades ago resulted from clinical and basic science collaborative studies on Burkitt lymphoma. Subse quently, nasopharyngeal carcinoma and infectious mononucleosis have been linked etiologically with the virus. During the first decade of research following the discovery of the virus, the mechanisms for the induction of BL, NPC, and IM were sought. At that time one prevailing view was that individual oncogenic strains of EBV were responsible for the different disorders. Paralleling the development of immunology in the 1970's was the accrual of knowledge about immunological events occurring during IM. These studies suggest that immune defense mechanisms deter mine the outcome of this viral infection rather than different viral strains. During the early 1970's, Starzl and Penn and Gatti and Good had noted an increased frequency of malignancy in renal allograft recipients and children with primary immune deficiency disorders, respectively. These observations provoked investigators to restudy the role of immune surveillance against malignancy. The aim of these lectures was to highlight some of the current progress in our understanding of the degenerate electron 'liquid' in an external field which is neither uniform nor periodic. This theme brought together such topics as the electronic structure at metallic surfaces and in random metallic alloys, liquid metals and metallic glasses. As is the case in connection with infinite order ed crystals, the central issues to be discussed were the nature of the electronic spectra, the stability of the various phases and the occurrence of such phenomena as magnetism and supercon ductivity. In the theoretical lectures the emphasis was on detailed rea listic calculations based, more or less, on the density functional approach to the problem of the inhomogeneous electron liquid. How ever, where such calculations were not available, as in the case of magnetism in random alloys and that of metallic glasses, sim pler phenomenological models were used. The theoretical discussions were balanced by reviews of the most promising experimental techniques.
