Hardback, 240x280mm, 144p, 100 colour illustrations. ISBN 9788857214146. A selection of drawings by two Belgian artists: Philippe Vandenberg, painter, and Berlinde De Bruyckere, sculptress. Philippe Vandenberg (Ghent, 1952 Brussels, 2009) was a foremost Belgian painter, whose oeuvre presented a series of radical stylistic and thematic shifts, reflecting both a personal trajectory and responses to varying socio-cultural changes. The creative basis of Berlinde De Bruyckeres drawings, sculptures and installations, is rooted in her childhood, and has been layered over with subsequent experiences and ideas. Its figurative points of departure render her work highly recognizable. Even though their oeuvres are so divergent in approach, sensibility, imagery, style, iconography, they show some strong affinity. As far as the content of their work is concerned, the two artists share parallel existential views, as well as a deep interest in the literary world, in the history of Western art, and in the traditions of religious imagery. The starting point is Berlinde De Bruyckeres intuitive selection from Philippe Vandenberg's legacy of drawings. For more than one year she leafed through his work. From the extensive amount of drawings that he left behind, she selected about 70 items and joined them to a selection from her own drawings. This book is the reflection of a meeting. It is a dialogue, not between artists who may, or may not, have known each other, but between their corpus of drawings. 0 g.…

Hardback, 297x210mm, 512p, 650 bw and col. illustrations. English edition . ISBN 9788857221243. Visual artist, choreographer, writer and director, Jan Fabre has been one of the most influential figures on the European scene for over twenty years. His provocative forays into all different art forms are aimed at breaking down the artistic and moral barriers of his times. Published on the occasion of the exhibition of Fabres works at the MAXXI in Rome, the monograph brings together, for the first time, the action art and performances of the Belgian artist from the 70s to the present: drawings, thinking models, collages, films, photos and other documentation that lay the groundwork for a rediscovery of dozens of Fabres performances and interventions, both public and private, held in Belgium and abroad. The extreme, even brazen exploration of the human body, which frequently scandalizes viewers, is linked to the idea of metamorphosis, which Fabre may have derived from that passion for the sciences he inherited from his great-grandfather, the esteemed entomologist Jean-Henri Fabre. Jan Fabre has devoted much of his career to studying the human body and its transfiguration, central themes in his work 0 g.…

It is now a well-recognized fact that during the Roman Empire, tens of millions of Germans crossed its border. Germanic mercenaries served loyally under Julius Caesar, first as auxiliaries, later as legionaries, while some reached important military ranks.Today it is accepted that without the contribution of the Germans, it would have been difficult for the Roman Empire to last as long as it did. But how did Rome repay the northern barbarians for their almost total availability? This scholarly and accessible volume attempts to provide an answer to this historical puzzle. 0 g.…

Hardback, 280 x 380mm, 116 pages, 70 bw and col. illustrations. ISBN 9788857214443. This new artists book by Berlinde De Bruyckere presents for the first time her recent sculptures and drawings concerned with the human figure and the deer Berlinde de Bruyckere is a sculptor from Ghent in Belgium, whose wild and sensual figures are formed using a melange of natural materials such as animal pelts, hair, wood and wax. In her recent works Berlinde De Bruyckere worked with a professional dancer, Romeu, as model, defining his movements and poses and developing her own sculptural choreography. The figures are faceless, malformed and fragmentary. At first their shape seems familiar although their forms resist interpretation, offering a disturbing vision of fragility and suffering. Alongside the human body the deer plays a prominent role in De Bruyckeres new work: the deer is a majestic ambassador of nature, sometimes present as flesh-coloured antlers masterfully rendered in wax. The photographer Mirjam Devriendt shows the fragile and vulnerable sculptures in a unique setting, an abandoned house in the old town of Ghent. The accompanying text by Caroline Lamarche reads like a fairy tale about the life and work of a sculptor and her urge to create. Romeu my deer is the most personal book of De Bruyckere. It recounts the story of intense memories, and describes the process of creation. (Caroline Lamarche). 0 g. …
