Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Perhaps I should begin by saying that I am not, in terms of ethnic origin, English. My parents emigrated to England from the Irish Republic, and we have all lived in Britain for so long that no one can see the join - or can they? Some years ago, my mother was admitted to hospital for a routine operation. Award nurse saw her obviously foreign name on the admissions list, and concluded she must be Asian. Accordingly, she arranged for my mother to have a bed in the same bay as other Asian women, and ordered her a curry for lunch. Part of me was angry at the stereotypical thinking rhat every- one with a strange name must be Asian, but I had to concede that I myself knew little about other cultures. My own patients came from a variety of cultural traditions, but neither I nor my colleagues knew very much about them. What information we had was culled directly from patients and their families in a haphazard 'do this' or 'don't do that' basis. Because we had no understanding of the traditions, staff could become exasperated over what they interpreted as 'awkwardness'.Our inadequacies were further highlighted when patients did not speak English: there was always the question of who could translate for them, and whether they fully understood their illnesses and their treat- ments. For some, the experience of being in hospital must have been frightening. Part of me was angry at the stereotypical thinking rhat every one with a strange name must be Asian, but I had to concede that I myself knew little about other cultures. Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. This book intends to act as a resource for those caring for children. The children I nursed who experienced pain are the stimulus for both my interest in the issue of pain and latterly in writing this book. Some of the children I cared for stand out as milestones in terms of provoking thought and in questioning practice -James, Ralph and Felicity. These children were tough and brave and taught me a lot about the human aspect of pain and suffering. However, as children, especially vulner- able children in hospital, they would not have had to have been as tough or as brave if! had been more knowledgeable about practice issues such as distraction, imagery, massage and so on or had a better understanding of the complexity of pain. Nursing should add to a child's life. By developing knowledge and skills within pain management and prevention nurses are in a strong position to ensure that they, the child and their family are in control of the pain and that the pain is not in control of the child.Developing these skills is ultimately rewarding both personally and professionally and nurses should be encouraged to scrutinize their practice carefully and identify areas where improvements could be made. Listening carefully to what children and their families say about their pain and in identifying the needs of the individual child is an essential part of holistic and comprehensive nursing care. By developing knowledge and skills within pain management and prevention nurses are in a strong position to ensure that they, the child and their family are in control of the pain and that the pain is not in control of the child. How do you respond to the distress of a man who is sitting before you, in his own flat, towels draped around his shoulders, newspaper wedged beneath the brim of his hat, an upturned frying pan over his hat and a partially filled washing-up bowl balanced on top of the frying pan? He holds the bowl with one hand and a cigarette in the other, while he force- fully proclaims the secret services have placed someone in the flat above to drop radioactive dust down on him all day and all night. To start with, you could offer him a light for his cigarette. The most likely medical response would be to consider increasing his antipsychotic medicine, though a cursory glance at his medical history suggests that inpatient admissions and large mUltiple prescriptions of injections and tablets have failed to eradicate the distressing fears that the secret services have occupied the ward above. Perhaps all the increased medication will achieve is to stop him going upstairs intent on retribu- tion. It may even leaden his limbs sufficiently to make his current balanc- ing act too difficult to sustain. How do you respond to the distress of a man who is sitting before you, in his own flat, towels draped around his shoulders, newspaper wedged beneath the brim of his hat, an upturned frying pan over his hat and a partially filled washing-up bowl balanced on top of the frying pan? If you are an expert in research, this is not the book for you unless you merely wish to revise your existing knowledge. Above all this book is intended as an outline and a guide. It does not provide a definitive recipe on how to conduct a research project. You will learn by your own studies which methods and techniques suit you best and how to modify ideas to meet your own requirements. NB Therapist is referred to as she in the text for simplicity. Acknowledgements lowe particular thanks to Dr Naomi Fraser-Holland for her substantial contributions to the production of this book. My sincere thanks also go to Marion Walker, Dr John Gladman, Dr Nadina Lincoln, Dr Alison Hammond and Julia Nuthall for ideas, information and advice, and to Jane Greaves for her wonderful cartoons. I would also like to acknowledge the assistance of colleagues at the Stroke Research Unit, City Hospital, Nottingham, and at the Derby School of Occupational Therapy.I am grateful to Jo Campling for her support and guidance and to the staff at Chapman & Hall for all their assistance. Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. This book aims to give health professionals a balanced and indepen- dent overview of massage and aromatherapy. I have written it because, despite growing interest, there is a dearth of professional literature on this subject. This book aims to cover a number of topics which are under-represented in existing publications. These include: * scientific research in massage and aromatherapy; * the use of the therapies in medical settings; * the knowledge base of massage and aromatherapy; * professional and managerial issues; * safety. Understanding of these subjects is essential for any reasoned evalu- ation of massage and aromatherapy. Yet this book is probably the first to provide information suitable for this task. At the current time of writing, almost all books on massage and aroma therapy have been written with the lay public in mind. The texts recommended to students and practitioners by the foremost schools and institutions are exactly the same as those available in health food shops as general introductions for prospective patients. Not surprisingly, such books generally fail to include in-depth discussions of professional issues. This book aims to give health professionals a balanced and indepen dent overview of massage and aromatherapy. These include: scientific research in massage and aromatherapy; the knowledge base of massage and aromatherapy; Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

In 1986 the Trustees of the Nuffield Provincial Hospitals Trust decided to develop a major core programme of studies concerned with the organization, development and improvement of services for physically disabled and frail elderly people. This programme developed rapidly due to the enthusiastic response of those in the field; and by 1992 the total value of the programme was in excess of GBP2 million and currently totals over GBP3. 2 million. It comprised a cohesive matrix of grants commissioned throughout the United Kingdom for work in identified areas which, taken in conjunction with existing grants, formed a comprehensive programme of much-needed studies and research in this field. The whole was to be underpinned by a major study planned and financed by the Trust but conducted by the Royal College of Physicians to survey the existing services being provided by some 180 health authorities. This study, together with concern for the handicapped schoolleaver, information about the availability of disability services and the care of mild/moderate head-injured persons, formed the prime initial thrust of the programme. In the case of head injury, the Trust was particularly concerned that there was discontinuity of care for many patients and little evidence as to which treatments were effective. Once patients had stabilized in hospital they were discharged into the community under the care of their general practitioner often without a continuing responsibility from the hospital. In 1986 the Trustees of the Nuffield Provincial Hospitals Trust decided to develop a major core programme of studies concerned with the organization, development and improvement of services for physically disabled and frail elderly people. Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Since 1990 there has been considerable development in research in nursing practice which uses a model of nursing. This is due to many reasons. However, the aims of this book remain the same as for the first edition -to present the reader with current reports of studies in nursing practice which use a model of nursing as their base. I will also criticize the research methods that the studies use, to give the reader an indication of the credi- bility of the findings, as well as commenting on the popularity of the model in different countries and cultures. A development that is possible since the last edition is the ability to give some indication of why the model of nursing was used; in other words what was the author's intention in studying nursing practice in depth with the use of a model. This will give some indication of the impli- cations of the authors' work; I will develop this point further in the Introduction to this edition. Therefore this edition is not simply an updating of further studies published since 1990. Since the last edition there has also been some comment on the models that I included.I am grateful to Margaret Clarke (1991) and others who have pointed out that Neuman's model should be included, and there is therefore a chapter devoted to this in this edition.
