Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Air explores the tradition in British art of finding inspiration in the airaround us and skies above us. The book weaves its way through British artincluding early experiments with air and studies of clouds, torepresentations of breath (blowing glass, balloons) and wind instrumentsto flying creat…ures (real and imaginary) and wartime skies, beforeconsidering the physical possibilities of flight which shifted our perceptionsof the landscape, as aerial photography made the view of the earth fromabove available to wider audiences. Contemporary work introduces newenvironmental issues to the narrative, making reference to climate changeand air-borne disease, as well as considering air as an integral componentin the process of making art, to demonstrate how air is everywhere. The beautifully illustrated book includes a number of insightful essayswhich expand on the exhibitions interweaving themes looking at the lifeof breath from a philosophical position; an exploration of our enduringfascination with the pursuit of ballooning from the first intrepid flights inthe eighteenth century from co-curator Christiana Payne, and a nebulousaccount of clouds throughout British art from Gemma Brace, attempting tovisualise the invisible in words. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Top Bristol photographer Stephen Morris has been out and about trying to catch up with Bristol's ever-changing graffiti - an anarchic scene so interesting that Destination Bristol has given it a tourist web page all its own. In all, he's captured more than 50 examples. Some walls have been commis…sioned, by schools, pubs, youth clubs and building sites. One superb example of commissioned graffiti is the flying bread and cakes on Herbert's bakery in Wellington Avenue, but the liveliest artwork is the unofficial, sprayed as it were on the run from arrest. Even the best is often quickly lost under fresh paint, good art obliterated by the mindless. And yes, Banksy is represented here. Love it or hate it, Bristol graffiti is inventive, clever and sometimes brilliant. Is it art? Stephen Morris just took the pictures, and says it's for us to decide. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. With his fiercely unsophisticated paintings the near illiterate mariner Alfred Wallis became the unlikely darling of the 1930s modernists grouped around Ben Nicholson, while Bryan Pearce's serene, naively crafted depictions of St Ives have also taken their place in the pantheon of twentieth…century British art. A chapter on the self-taught Mary Jewels throws new light on the life of a much neglected artist, first encouraged by Cedric Morris and later collected by Augustus John. The survey concludes with brief profiles of a dozen other artists whose individual visions have enriched the life of this celebrated artists' community. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. John Edgar Platt was one of the leading lights of 1920s and 1930s printmaking. This is the first book to consider his place in British 20th century printmaking and investigate the influence of Japanese woodblock printing on the output of Platt and his contemporaries. It features colour illus…trations of all his printed work and two essays by print expert Hilary Chapman.A master of the colour woodblock print in the Japanese style, Platt combined eastern technique with a western design sensibility. His use of bold colour inspired one critic to praise the 'gamut of singing hues' found in his prints. Fellow colour woodblock artist Allen Seaby acknowledged that There is no doubt that in your hands the wood print has been raised far above its former status. The fusion of traditional European subject matter with the Japanese woodblock method enabled Platt to create some of the most original images in British printmaking. He found subjects to inspire him among the harbours and fishing boats of Cornwall and Devon and in warmer climes at St Tropez. During the 1930s he adopted a spare style based on blocks of flat colour to create strikingly modern works including Horse (1934), Lapwings (1936) and his masterpiece the triptych The Plough (1937). First book about this printmaker John Edgar Platt. Considers his place in British 20th century printmaking and investigates the influence of Japanese woodblock printing. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. The Newlyn artist Elizabeth Forbes (18591912) for long suffered the fate of women artists of her generation, living in the shadow of her husband, Stanhope Forbes. This first major study of her life and work gives a more rounded view of this fine artist and moving spirit in the Newlyn artist colon…y. In her most characteristic work, her studies of children and domestic interiors, she is clearly a match for her male colleagues painting their more grimly realistic depictions of life in the Cornish fishing community. Elizabeth was central to the cultural and artistic life of the area, running with her husband the celebrated Newlyn School of Painting. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Using both words and images author, Gill Clarke tracks the genesis of the Women's Land Army in the First World War through to its re-formation in the Second World War and final disbandment in 1950. This is the first study to make extensive use of paintings by distinguished and lesser-known artist…s, together with recruitment posters, cartoons and photographs from both World Wars to portray the life and work of the Women's Land Army. Theirs is something of a forgotten history. Yet, the work these women did on the land often in terrible conditions was vital to the success of the war effort. They played a crucial part in increasing levels of productivity from the land in both World Wars. Drawing on published autobiographies and recent interviews by the author with Land Girls in the Second World War, this book tells their story and those of the artists and illustrators who recorded their heroic work. The book is divided into three illustrated sections - Holding the Home Front: The Women's Land Army in the First World War; Back to the Land: The Women's Land Army in the Second World War; and, Recording Life on the Land: Portraits of the Artists and Illustrators. This book is profusely illustrated, with many iconic images being published here for the first time. It is published to coincide with a unique exhibition devoted to the Women's Land Army at St Barbe Gallery, Lymington in October 2008. The publication follows renewed interest in twentieth-century British art. It is published in the year that the Women's Land Army veterans are officially honoured by the Government and awarded a badge to recognise their efforts. This book will appeal not only to former Land Army Girls and their families, but to a varied audience including students, researchers and scholars of art, social and cultural history and biographical studies. In addition it will appeal to those with an interest in the connections between biography and art. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. In the 1960s Tim Scott tested the limits of what a sculpture could be. Visionary and audacious, his large-scale constructions radically transformed the inheritance of Constantin Brancusi and Henri Matisse. How spatially expansive could sculpture become whilst retaining its identity as sculpt…ure? Could sculpture incorporate colour and translucency, without abandoning a sense of mass and density? Scott explored these questions in materials new to sculpture including plywood, fibreglass, steel, aluminium, perspex and latex foam. This publication provides succinct commentaries on ten key sculptures by Scott, along with an introduction by his contemporary William Tucker. AUTHOR: Sam Cornish is a writer and curator. His publications include Frank Bowling: Sculpture (Ridinghouse, 2022), John Hoyland: The Last Paintings (Ridinghouse, 2021), Mali Morris: Painting (Royal Academy, 2019), Stockwell Depot 1967-79 (Ridinghouse, 2015), John Panting: Sculpture (Sansom & Co, 2012) and Robert Motherwell: Drawings (Bernard Jacobson Gallery, 2011). Amongst his exhibitions are Unreal City (Saatchi Gallery, 2024), Mali Morris: Returning (Hatton Gallery, 2024), Garth Evans Sculpture: A Place In the World (CALOSA, Mexico, 2024), These Mad Hybrids: John Hoyland and Contemporary Sculpture (RWA, Bristol, 2024), Mali Morris: Calling (Ikon Gallery, 2023), Frank Bowling: Sculpture (University of Greenwich Galleries 2022), John Hoyland: The Last Paintings (Sheffield Museums, 2021), Kaleidoscope: Colour and Sequence in 1960s British Art (Arts Council touring exhibition, 2017-18), and John Panting: Spatial Constructions (Adam Art Gallery, New Zealand, 2013).
