Hardcover. Condición: New. Contents: Texts: I. General considerations: 1. Rigveda. 2. The Yajurveda. 3. The Samaveda. 4. Atharvaveda. 5. The Brahmanas. 6. The Aranyakas and the Upanishads. 7. Kalpasutras. 8. Supplementary texts. 9. The schools: the Veda after the Vedic period. II. Beliefs. III. Speculations. IV. Rituals: 1. The public rites. 2. The domestic rites. 3. Magic. V. Civilisation. Index. "These texts include the Samhita or "collections", generally in verse, which contain more especially hymns, prayers and ritual formulae; the Brahmana or "Brahmanic explanations", theological commentaries on the Samhitas, in prose; the Aranyaka, "forest texts", and Upanishad, commentaries adjoined to the Brahmanas but of a more esoteric character. Finally the Veda is concluded by the Vedanga "(auxiliary) limbs of the Veda", subsidiary works of exegesis, explanation, which are not part of the Veda in the narrow sense: they are no longer sruti but smriti, "(tradition entrusted to) memory". The intense development of the priestly spirit in the Post-Rigvedic texts was not able entirely to overcome this state of mind, which spontaneously modified the more pacific trend of the Brahmanic culture which supervened after the first invasions. But the Vedic culture was also enabled to impose itself by the richness of its religious ideas, which were powerful enough to set the framework of all the forms assumed by the religions of India through the centuries which followed." Summary of Prathyabhinj philosophy as given by Pandit Kalla. 2. Kalidasa and music. 3. Glossary. In this book a modest attempt is made to present to the readers some of the beauties from the works of Kalidasa so that those who have got the leisure or patience to study all his work may get a glimpse of the poet's genius. It is a standing reproach to our Indian Sanskrit scholars that they have not done justice to the greatest poet of their country. The labours of this writer in publishing these beauties or gems from the works of Kalidasa will be amply repaid if some Indian scholars come forward to give the result of their critical study about the works of Kalidasa as Henry Morley Dowden Gervinus Moulton and others have done in respect of Shakespeare. 170 pp.

Kriti analysis of Muthuswami Dikshitar Syamasastri Swati Tirunal and Papanasam Sivan. 5. Conclusion. Bibliography. Classical music and dance are some of the very proud treasures of the heritage of our nation. The author wishes to analyze the extent and scope for Abhinaya leading to dramatic potentials as available in most of the Kritis of eminent composers of Carnatic music. Both Carnatic music and dance have prominent place in the cultural and fine arts set up. This has not only swayed the hearts of the ethnic Indian community but also the hearts of the universe breaking all barriers. Together they have a great role in the cultural diplomacy to make the world a better and befitting place to live. The author shares her experience in the dance field as a vocalist with different dancers to select this particular subject for her analysis. This experience of her singing for different dancers and for different forms which inspired the author for a special study. As an attempt for a comprehensive study covering all the composers and their entire compositions for review it would be very voluminous the author has taken the study of the Musical Trinity and few of the prominent post period musical Trinity composers. During the course of deep study of these composers the author has realised greater potentiality specially in the kritis of Tyagaraja for portraying different types of Abhinaya which further propelled her interest on the subject. She has also made a comparative study of the compositions of these composers under review. 182 pp.

A history of education should explain how educational doctrines are related to the intellectual and social tendencies of the times in which they originated should expound these doctrines and should indicate how they affect educational practice. This work does not profess to be a history of education it confines itself to a exposition of the doctrines of a limited number of representative educators. It does not deal with their lives. in one respect this is a disadvantage in another an advantage. It is a disadvantage in so far as the lives of the authors frequently help to elucidate their doctrines it is an advantage in so far as it enables us to avoid the argumentum ad hominem fallacy which is frequently exemplified in histories of education. Students of education are advised to read the texts of the authors along with the chapters on the doctrines here given. For the doctrines of educators only incidentally mentioned in these pages or entirely omitted from them they are referred to such a history of education as Monroe's Text Book. Other readers will find the chapters designed to give a general idea of the doctrines of the great educators without recourse to other works. 262 pp.

Hardbound. Condición: As New. New. From the above works of various descriptions can be judged the versatile nature of the genius of their author. He was a poet a dramatist and an astronomer. And his works bespeak the superior order of his scholarship his acquaintance with the important systems of philosophy the Upanisadas and the Puranas his close observation of society and its intricate problems his delicate appreciation of the most refined feelings his familiarity with the conflicting sentiments and emotions of the human heart and his keen perception of and deep sympathy with the beauties of nature. His imagination was of a very high order and of a constructive nature. His description aerial voyages in Raghuvansam and Sakuntala is so exquisitely beautiful and so true to nature that one can not but the struck with the vast range of the constructive and reproductive capacity of his imagination. Of the three plays of Kalidasa the Sakuntala has acquired the greatest celebrity. The popularity of this pay with the natives of India exceeds that of any other dramatic and probably of any other poetical composition. But it is not in India alone that the Sakuntala is known and admired. Its excellence and beauty are acknowledged by many learned men in every country of the civilized world. Sakuntala is a maiden bordering on womanhood. Her heart when we first see her is already undet the influence of love though that feeling has not yet assumed a clear and distinct form. She is guileless but she feels no scruple in telling an untruth if it serves her ends without doing injury to others. Her capacity for love is unbounded. She can forget herself forget the world and everything when she is absorbed in thoughts of love. She is gentle and meek yet she can undauntedly give vent to her moral indignation against the ruler of the earth. But she is not vindictive. She has that benign graciousness that forgivingness and that kindly nature the presence of which in a woman makes a goddess of her and a heaven of home. The Uttaramacarita a drama of considerable celebrity from the pen of Bhavabhuti the poet of deep pathos and the sublime bears some resemblance to the Sakuntala. The Uttaracarita opens with the installation of Maharaja Ramachandra and his Queen Sita on the throne of Ayodhya and in this respect does not compare with the Sakuntala the first three acts of which are taken up with a description of the hero's devices for gaining the hand of the heroine. The real comparison begins after the banishment of Sita and the public disowning of Sakuntala. The pangs of love which the heroes of both the pays feel at the separation from their respective queens is matter common to the two plays. But Bhavabhuti excels in describing the deep pathos and the heart stirring incidents. In the closing scenes the resemblance is greater. Dusyanta sees his unknown son feels his heart overflowing with affection for him and from a collation of circumstantial evidence concludes the boy to be his son. In the Uttaracarita precisely similar is the predicament of Rama with regard to his unknown sons. Both Sita and Sakuntala are exemplary wives. But Sita a devotion to her husband is of a transcendental nature her forgivingness verges on improbability. 202 pp.

Realization and resolution. Selected bibliography. Unlike most of the modern writers who misinterpret man's true condition by accepting a bitterness about absurd existence Anita Desai holds the view that the writer must perpetually fight for the true depiction of man's condition and the mystery about it. During the execution of her process of exploration of this mystery Anita Desai calls for a fresh approach to reality holds life as a sacred asset and seeks to communicate its richness power and mystery through ideas that contradict the formidable stances of alienation and absurdity. Ordinary life feels Anita Desai has always been man's true condition and that its exclusion from art is a step toward inauthenticity and error. Art for Anita Desai seems to be a purgation of consciousness having something to do with the achievement of stillness in the midst of chaos. It seems that for Anita Desai the great imperative for art is to dissociate itself from theoretical abstractions and ingenious explanations of reality and try to restore the magic or enhancement of life which is innate in every human being. The obstacles attending the realisation of such a vision in art constitute for Anita Desai the essence of the problem of affirmation above and beyond particular stances of world views. Though Anita Desai is conscious of the fact that man is basically a stranger and an exile in this world she does not hold the view that man's exile is without remedy. Rather she has the hope of a promised land of steady wisdom of life which involves her belief that man must face his trap situation lucidly and he must not brood over the sense of the absurd. 220 pp.

Modern trends in the application of tone tune and text in Hindustani Classical Music. Conclusion. Bibliography. Index. The world of music is as vast as an ocean as endless and infinite as the sky. The present book The Importance of Tone Tune and Text in Indian Music is an interesting study of music as it attempts to trace out a few distinctive features of music from their origin to this modern time. Tones or swaras gradually ware extended with the discovery of strutis. These strutis were later used to create different tunes or melodies which gave rise to ragas the soul of Indian classical music. Text in music in the via media through which the message of a raga or the indication of a rasa comes out to win over the hearts of the listeners. Last but not the least Tala acts as a binding agent between the three and puts life and rhythm into it. 236 pp.

There is nothing in nature that arouses our attention or affects our feelings so quickly as a sound. The murmuring of water the sighs of the zephyrs the whispers of the evening breeze the roar of the storms the chirpings of the birds the cries of the animals the hum of distant multitudes and the concussion of sonorous bodies excite in our minds feeling of pleasure pain or fear and contain in them the germs of music. A musical sound is a noise no doubt by every noise is not a musical sound. There is marked difference between the two. Noise is a confused combination of sounds resulting from the concussion of non elastic bodies musical sound is a pure harmonious effect produced from a simple elastic body such as the tone of a bell. It flies further and is heard at a greater distance then a noise. The musical instruments played at a gathering may be heard at a distance of a mile but the noise made by the people at the gathering however overpowering it may be on the spot is scarcely audible at a similar distance. Sound (Sanskrit Nada) has been described as either inarticulate (Dhanyatmaka) or articulate (Varnatmaka). Instrumental music is considered inarticulate and vocal music articulate by the curious structure of the vocal organs man is capable of making a greater variety of tones than any other animal and has at his disposal the power of giving expression to every emotion. The human voice in its tone and accent is undoubtedly the purest and most sonorous of any which distinguishes the vocal animals. In those countries where man may be said like a plant to grow and flourish the voice expands and colder regions where the mouth is more constantly kept closed the voice is restricted and escapes with difficulty. Hence it is that the Afghan Dutch and similar other languages are so guttural that in the delivery of some of their words the speakers seem as if they are choked and hence it is that in India Greece Italy and other Southern Countries the climate of which is noted so much for its beauty and mildness the vocal art has risen to so much fame. A few facts concerning Hindu music are given a place in the appendix. To enter into details of the kind in the body of the work would be going beyond its general scope. 374 pp.

Library  Science deals  with maintenance and arrangements of books Although Library Science is a new discipline the conception of reduplication on the basis of printing techniques goes back to Indus Valley Civilization Many an ancient Indian classic are now available on Bhojapatra which could not be possible without an effort of maintenanceModern practices of maintaining books have become complex Evolution of printing press made it possible to produce more and more books A librarian has to deal with a number of jobs procurement of books categorisation and cataloguing etc He has to maintain a file of reference periodical section and record of new arrivals The art of cataloguing relates to both catalogues and bibliographies It is the art of describing and listing material in such a way as to make it as easy as possible to discover the nature and extent of what is available and if appropriate where this material may be located or obtained from With the advent of computer and development of information technology the task of a librarian has become easier Even books are now kept in digital form Huge shelves and big buildings prove to be useless Through an internet a huge library is now available on computer screen.
