Old illegible stamp to front paste-down, moderate foxing, and the hinges tender, but precariously holding. A popular English language trans…lation of this influential German preacher and philosopher. Soft cover. Condición: Good. 12mo. [4], 96pp. [Continuously paginated, vol. II with half-title]. In modern wraps with label on front cover. Leaves toned and foxed throughout. Unlike other editions, this edition does not call for illustrations. Good. Relatively unknown today, Elizabeth Helme was a popular and prolific novelist in… her time; she was also a translator, travel writer and educational author. The history of Louisa, the lovely orphan was her first and most popular novel, was published anonymously in London, 1787. It appears that the first American was printed in 1795 in Wilmington, [Del.], called the 8th edition and this 9th edition is the first Boston printing of the novel. The first New York edition appeared in 1800. Evans 33867.

Hardcover. Condición: Fair. Contemporary full calf with spine label. Small octavo. Two volumes bound in one. First American edition of this conduct book by the English novelist, poet, playwright and conduct book author, Jane West (1758-1852). Her earlier novel "A Gossip Story" (1796) served as a source text for Jane Austen's "Se…nse and Sensibility". Our copy is a curious one in that pages 29-32 of the text are misbound between pages vi and vii of the contents and introduction. The text is however complete. The leather covers are rubbed and worn but in firm shape and quite attractive. The text is worn with some foxing and spotting throughout, occasionally heavy. Eight pages have closed tears at the right side but the text is still present. Scarce.
