Condición: Very Good. `In Cracking the Hard Class, the undisputed master of behaviour management, Bill Rogers, shows us that being an effective teacher isnt a result of God-given gifts of charisma and presence, but can be developed through a series of specific skills and learned actions. Its one of the mot useful books around for new teachers - Geoff Barton, The Times Education Supplement `[Bill Rogers] most recent books - both from Paul Chapman Publishing - are Behaviour Management: A Whole-School Approach and Cracking the Hard Class. Both are excellent and, if you can catch him live on one of his UK roadshows, youre in for a real treat. This practical approach from a writer who has clearly retained at least a notional foot in the classroom is the one that works best for me - Geoff Barton, Times Educational Supplement `It is rare to read a book about education that makes you laugh and cry. Members of our profession frequently adopt academic, ponderous or obscure writing styles. Here s a writer to has rejected the pulpit to reveal the human emotions in a teachers work in an entertaining, thought provoking book. While light-hearted Bill is no lightweight. His work has a sound theoretical base but out of this we catch only a passing glimpse. He prefers to concentrate on practical strategies to help teachers cope - Books and Writing `This book would certainly be invaluable to colleagues in the school where some had done the course and others had learnt at second hand. It would have a place in the staffroom of most schools, especially in the secondary sector. Bill Rogers is clearly a charismatic teacher what he offers is based on secure knowledge of child psychology, classroom dynamics and staffroom politics - Emotional & Behavioural Difficulties `Bill Rogers is the modern guru of discipline. I enjoyed both books and found Cracking the Hard Class especially interesting. Mind you, you cant go far wrong with a title like that - Times Educational Supplement `If you are a fan of Bill Rogers then this book will not disappoint. If you have never heard of him and want to know more about strategies for coping with discipline, then read this. An excellent book with many clear ideas and examples that will undoubtedly change the way you teach. This book covers all key stages but seems to edge slightly more towards secondary school. Buy it now! - Phil Burney-Cumming `This is an excellent book for teachers at any key stage who have one or more "difficult" pupils in their class, as well as those with the "hard class". It provides simple and effective behaviour management strategies and makes you realise you are not alone and that its okay to have a bad day. It mainly discusses secondary education but does refer to primary. Many of the strategies are suitable for all levels anyway. An absolute must-have for teacher - Amazon Review At some point in every teachers career he/she will encounter the `hard class and from day one the countdown to the end of the day, term and year is on in earnest. But as demanding as it may be, a difficult class does not have to dominate and permeate through all waking moments. Bill Rogers, in Cracking the Hard Class, highlights many practical strategies that can be implemented to overcome the hard class syndrome. These include: identifying what makes a class `hard; developing a class behaviour plan; developing colleague support; following up on disruptive students; changing patterns of bad behaviour; and assisting relief teachers and the hard class. As well as constructive ideas and strategies, Cracking the Hard Class also highlights the normality of the pressures and stress felt by teachers dealing with these classes. . To view the video - click here ------------------------------------------------------------- `One of the most reliable (and readable) guides to what is involved in counselling that stems from the various psychoanalytic traditions. Jacobs well-organized and comprehensive summaries of the main theories and his illustrations of psychodynamic counselling drawn from his own work will inspire students and trainees on counselling and therapy courses. They will also interest (and create envy) in more experienced readers - Professor Andrew Samuels, Centre for Psychoanalytic Studies, University of Essex Psychodynamic Counselling in Action is widely regarded as the most accessible introduction to the psychodynamic approach, making it ideal for readers who are new to the subject. In this Third Edition of his bestselling book, Michael Jacobs describes the psychodynamic counselling process from initial meeting right through to the end of the relationship. He sets out the main theory and principles involved in psychodynamic work and - through two case studies - a man and a woman - shows how these can be applied creatively and effectively within the process. In updating the book, he has also extended his discussion of defences and the therapeutic relationship. Psychodynamic Counselling in Action has been instrumental in training many thousands of counsellors. Now in its Third Edition, it continues to be the essential text for a wide range of courses. . In art, such learning depends on exploring and experimenting with the visual language through which artists communicate, and the visual elements such as line, colour and shape. The National Curriculum places strong emphasis on experimenting with and applying the visual elements. This book systematically explores the basic knowledge needed to do this effectively. The author deals with the visual elements of art, their properties, how they are related, and especially with the ways in which childrens knowledge of each can be developed through simple but creative activities. Each element is placed in context, with extensive cross-referencing. The author shows how these elements can be observed in the childrens environment and provides examples of how they have been used in works of art and craft. This accessible book does not assume any specialist knowledge or experience. It is essential for teachers at primary and secondary levels, art co-ordinators and for undergraduate and postgraduate level students of art education. Condición: Very Good. `This thoughtful and thought-provoking book is essential reading not only for those involved in the training of counsellors within the person-centred approach, but also for individuals who may have simplistic, dismissive or otherwise ill-informed notions of the depth of self-awareness required of the person-centred practitioner and the far-reaching challenges offered by the approach. For counsellors who define themselves as "person-centred" but who have had no substantial training, it should be compulsory reading - British Journal of Guidance & Counselling Person-centred counselling probably requires more training - and a greater intensity of training - than most other mainstream counselling approaches, but until now no one book has concentrated solely on the principles, practices and requirements of training person-centred counsellors. Dave Mearns has drawn on the lived experiences of both trainers and trainees to demonstrate the potential range and importance of training in this field. The material covered includes selecting and supporting trainers, selecting course members, skills development, supervision and other professional issues - essential features of all counsellor training, but of particular relevance to the person-centred approach. Written expressly for both trainees and trainers, this book also extends and develops current thinking within the approach, and will be a valuable resource for all person-centred practitioners. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

In Case Study 5 (a grassroots Childrens Mathematics Network group) the initiative supported the participants in their professional change by giving them a space for the detailed and joint consideration of childrens mathematical thinking. Another significant feature of this initiative is its focus on careful consideration and analysis of childrens mathematics, and the ways in which professionals can support and encourage the childrens mathematical thinking and reasoning The standard of the mathematical understanding, thinking and reasoning that the displays revealed was far higher than the specified curriculum objectives for children of this age - Researching Effective CPD in Mathematics Education (RECME) project: (NCETM, 2009) The review also plays great score by play-based learning of a mathematical nature, and makes specific recommendations regarding early mark-making as a precursor to abstract mathematical symbolism. Section 115 features childrens mathematical graphics and emphasises: The role of mark-making in childrens cognitive development is set out in the taxonomy (Carruthers and Worthington, 2006). The report recommends that local authorities, leaders, managers and head teachers should provide a culture with a significant focus on mathematical mark-making and a learning environment that encourages children to choose to use their own mathematical graphics to support their mathematical thinking and processes - The Williams Maths Review: (DCSF, 2008) `At the very heart of the success of the book is the authors ability to see mathematics through young childrens eyes by listening to and reflecting on the constant efforts made by children to make sense of their world. This is a liberating book which proposes that the teaching of mathematics could and should be a highly creative and enjoyable proceess - Branwen Llewelyn Jones, Early Years Consultant at PACE Ltd / TACTYC Ground breaking. To single out any one chapter would be unfair because there is something thought-provoking and inspirational throughout. If you want to expand your understanding upwards and outwards then get a copy soon - Times Educational Supplement I first read Childrens Mathematics, Making Marks, Making Meaning a couple of years ago and it had an immediate impact on my own thinking and teaching, and the work I do with trainee teachers. Im sure you will find it compelling reading too. I think it has the potential to change, in a fundamental way, how we think about early mathematical development - Lynne McClure, Editor, Math Co-ordiators File, Mathematics Association In their exceptionally readable and informative book, Childrens Mathematics, Making Marks, Making Meaning Carruthers and Worthington (2006) draw attention to one of the main goals of early years teaching, that is, to help children make links between the mathematics they have already encountered (and continue to engage with) at home and the more abstract mathematics of the school. These authors suggest that by encouraging children to represent mathematical ideas in their own ways and, crucially, by talking to the pupils about the marks they have made, we are given a "window" onto their thinking that may otherwise be inaccessible - Liz Pumphrey, NRICH This book draws on the authors many years of teaching children aged three to eight years and also on their extensive research with children in the home, nursery and school. The authors explain the development and range of young childrens mathematical marks and visual representations, showing how children make mental connections between their own early marks and subsequent abstract mathematical symbolism, and go on to develop their own written methods. Combining theory and practice, this acclaimed book demonstrates how childrens own mathematical graphics are highly creative and show deep levels of thinking. The authors show how this is the key to success in school mathematics and to higher levels of achievement. The authors are winners of TACTYCs (2003) Jenefer Joseph Award for the Creative Arts (3 - 8) - awarded for their innovative work with children on mathematical graphics. This is a book for those who want to find more, to broaden their own perceptions and understanding of inclusion and to base their own practice on research, and as such would interest and inform any practitioner from managers to students.- Early Years Update This text is a must buy for anyone interested in inclusive education in the early years A particular strength of the book is the way in which the everyday experiences of children, parents and practitioners are discussed in relation to educational theory Perhaps the greatest strength of the book though, lies in the way that ideas are based on research findings are presented so clearly. It will almost certainly be nominated for this years NASEN/TES academic book award and deservedly so - SENCO Update Refreshingly, in this book, inclusion is not about a narrow group of students defined as special but about increasing the participation of everybody involved in early years settings. It is about reducing the exclusion of all children, their families and communities. It is also about the practitioners who work with them, whose involvement in decisions in their own workplace is critical if they are to support the participation of children. It is rich with experience, from the UK and internationally, building up an understanding of education from stories of encounters with children and their families. This book will help readers to escape from the confines of considering children, and the difficulties they encounter, through the constricting and distorting lens of special educational needs - Tony Booth, Professor of Inclusive and International Education Canterbury Christ Church University Fascinating reading . bound to inform discussions and encourage early years practicioners to develop and reflect on their own practices . I will be recommending this book to colleagues and adding it to my essential reading list for students - Nursery World A very helpful book which both challenges and informs. [It] brings together important evidence to help us find a positive way forward - Early Education Well-written and accessible. The book is rich with the reported experiences and ideas of educators and provides clear pointers for further research and discussion. It will serve as an excellent stimulus for educators in any early-years setting who are seeking to develop their own agreed philosophy and inclusive practices - Support For Learning By identifying and discussing key research studies on inclusion in the early years, and drawing on studies of practitioners views and experiences of working inclusively, this insightful text shows how practices in a range of early years settings can be influenced by the attitudes and responses of adults in those settings. The authors argue for a broad definition of inclusion, not limited to those with learning difficulties or impairment, but addressing factors affecting all members of the learning community. Key factors which can make inclusion successful are highlighted, including curriculum and pedagogy, professional development and work with parents. The book shows how working inclusively involves all members of the setting community, and presents a number of original stories (generated from a recent research project carried out by the authors) of how the lives of practitioners, parents and children have been affected by inclusive and non- inclusive practices. This is an essential text for all early years students, practitioners and researchers who want to become familiar with current research into inclusion and to develop ways of drawing on such studies to inform and develop their own inclusive practices.
