Hardback, 336 pp. This publication presents Kazimir Malevich's theoretical legacy, which is first and foremost connected to the time he spent in Kyiv and in Ukraine. When he lived in Kyiv, he taught at the Kyiv Art Institute and published in the journals Nova Generatsiia [New Generation] and Almanah-Avanhard [Avant-Garde]. In addition to these topics, the book also covers his letters, memoirs, and various publications related to his exhibition at the Kyiv Art Gallery in the 1930. Kazimir Malevich. This unique exhibition catalogue, published with Rodovid Press in Kyiv Ukraine. The lushly illustrated publication features 77 photographs, some never seen or published. Three important interviews with Hujar's closest friends and colleagues, plus a scholarly essay on his work with the photographer Richard Avedon, chronicle Hujar's ceaseless creative exploration and observation of life in the East Village of New York. While Hujar's later work from the 1970s and '80s may be better known, Doroshenko locates a seed in these early pieces. He noted Hujar's strict Ukrainian upbringing (he didn't speak English until he entered kindergarten), as much as how he entered the field of photography without any formal training. Hujar's Ukrainian grandmother raised him exclusively in the Ukrainian language until he was 5 years old. Hujar's difficult and unstable upbringing in a troubled household influenced his artistry and vision significantly, and he turned to photography, which would become his port in a storm.
