Añadir al carritoOctavo, blue boards (hardcover), gilt letters, 176 pp. Bookplate, otherwise, Fine; in a Very Good+ dust jacket with lightly rubbed edges. From dust jacket: Here, for the first time, the activities of aerial smugglers have been brought under review. In preparing this book the author has enjoyed full facilities for interviewing top customs officials; and records covering the past fifty years have been made available to him. Some incidents read more like fiction than fact. There is the story, for example, of the mysterious man in the green car who made fifty-seven flights across the Channel to organize a smuggling pipeline which extended over four countries. There are innumerable revelations concerning the activities of big-scale operators and their bids to win fabulous fortunes by smuggling gold, currency, diamonds, watches and dangerous drugs. There is a chapter on the wiles of expert women smugglers, and many sidelights are shed on the thousand-and-one tricks and stratagems devised by twentieth-century smugglers in their efforts to outwit the authorities. Aviation, Smuggling, Contraband, Smuggler, Bootleg, Illicit, Unlawful. yslic.

Añadir al carritoCloth, gilt cover device, 8vo, 372 pp, plates. The classic biographical and bibliographical account of Wise , expanded from the American edition published in 1939 as "Forging Ahead ". Highly readable, well-illustrated and fascinating. From the blurb: "In spite of the fame he attained before the exposure of many of the pamphlets in his Ashley Library, Wise was largely a Mystery Man. Practically nothing was known of his early origins and career. He was just accepted by the world as a wealthy, fastidious, and able connoisseur who was the possessor of superb collections of rare books and manuscripts. This work supplies his biographical background. But it does much more. Apart from information given by Wise to him personally, the author has had exclusive use of private papers of well-known men with whom Wise formed associations. In the building-up of his rich library he made great scoops. His most wonderful was the acquisition of the mass of Swinburne's unpublished manuscripts; and the author's two chapters giving a first-hand account of the astonishing events at the poet's retreat 'The Pines' brings out intimate and hitherto unpublished stories of Swinburne. Nor are these the only biographical sidelights. Into the general picture the author - partly from his personal reminiscences and partly from new sources - works in anecdotes and glimpses of Joseph Conrad, Thomas Hardy, Edmund Gosse, Ruskin, the Pre-Raphaelites, Dr Furnival, Clement Shorter, and that little known but much abused worthy Richard Herne Shepherd; all of which throw reflective light on the main character of this forthright book." Errata slip tipped-in, Good in remains of badly torn dustwrapper.

A copy with some inserted material of interest: (1) the printed volume has a paragraph of text on p227 replaced with asterisks -the missing text is supplied on a typescript rider pasted to the facing verso of a plate; (2) clippings from a Sotheby's auction catalogue of 13 December 1977 and another unidentified catalogue (either Sotheby's 26 April 1979 or Christie's NY 18 November 1988 ) are pasted to the front endpapers: these contain descriptions of Wise and Partington material including a copy of 'Forging Ahead' extensively annotated by George Bernard Shaw, who claimed to regard Wise's forgeries as a harmless joke played on his clients. Textblock edges slightly spotted, rear board lightly rubbed, slight bumps to lower edge and corner of front Board, otherwise Good in a used dustwrapper. Errata slip tipped in.

This absorbing account of the town (hill fort) of Maiden Castle shows there is no evidence of Roman occupation of the hilltop beyond the battle at the eastern gate, and a lone hermit-like temple or chapel of an apparently decadent Pagan religion. Situated on the outskirts of Dorchester, Dorset, this is an interesting town, and the author provides an interesting history.
