Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. 'The incredible story of the man who went from trying to win the Grand National to playing a key role in co-ordinating the French Resistance.' Daily Express An English racehorse trainer and horse dealer's son, John Goldsmith was born and brought up in Paris and spoke fluent French. In 1942 he was recruited in to the legendary Special Operations Executive, or SOE, and dropped three times behind enemy lines. In 1943 he organised the escape of a French air force general across the Pyrenees but a few months later he was caught by the Gestapo in Paris only to engineer his own getaway from a locked third floor hotel room. By the end of the war he had been awarded the DSO, MC, Croix de Guerre and Legion d'Honneur. Resuming his peacetime occupation in 1946 Goldsmith was sent numerous French racehorses to train. He found uncanny similarities between the secret agent's milieu and the black market world of Britain's post war racetracks and, in partnership with a high stakes Mayfair bookie, he orchestrated some of the most audacious betting coups in racing history. The brilliantly told true story of the exploits of trainer, gambler and SOE agent John Goldsmith. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

Very Good+ Condition Book minimal bumping to the base of the spine. Very Good Unclipped Dust Jacket, some slight edge wear (see image). Winning It Back is Gary Wiltshire's autobiography, telling the story of Britain's most famously larger‑than‑life gambler — a man who rose to the top of the betting world, crashed spectacularly, and then rebuilt everything from scratch. Wiltshire was a racecourse bookmaker, punter, and BBC betting‑ring pundit, known for his huge physical presence and even bigger bets. The book traces his life from childhood — calculating bets at age five and serving the Kray twins on his father's flower stall — through decades in the racing and greyhound worlds. Hardback. Condición: Mint. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. Second Impression. OF HORSES AND HEROES Brough Scott. Racing Post Publishing, Newbury.2009 Second Impression ISBN 9781905156573 256pp Illustrated Hardback. Signed by Author. This mint unread copy is bound in cloth covered boards with bright gilt titling to the spine, tight, white, bright and square. The unclipped dust wrapper is lightly sunned to the leading edge but still in fine condition. This copy was clearly given by the author on the occasion of the Racing Post Juvenile Night on 3 March 2009 and is signed on thye half title 'Congratulations Brough Scott' with no other dedication. Brough Scott has been inspired by horses. As a professional jockey he rode them in the Grand National and at Cheltenham. As a writer and broadcaster, he has followed the racing game as far afield as Australia, Argentina, Hong Kong and Japan but for him it has always been the horses that have been at the heart of it all. In this collection of his writings over the last 40 years, he puts them centre stage. No one has ever written about the racehorse the way he does. Whether actually in the saddle on Red Rum, in the stable with Shergar, at the fences with Denman, or inflight with Motivator, he gives us a unique understanding of the equine athlete and those around it. He takes us up the gallops at Newmarket, on to the Moors at Middleham, into the Forest of Chantilly and across the Curragh Plain. He stands in the foaling box and at the winning post. He goes where only the gallopers go. No one who likes horses or racing should miss it. Ref R4. Signed by Author(s).…
