A series of papers by John Hill, originally published in the London advertiser and Literary gazette, the London daily advertiser and Literary gazette and the London daily advertiser: London: Jackson, Cowlrick, Griffths, 1751-1753. volume 1 (of 2) only, [iv] 338 [7] [3]pp, 3 pages of publisher's adverts at the end, contemporary speckled calf (somewhat worn, minor loss of leather to the edges, corners bumped with joints showing, joints cracked), red morocco spine label, neat ink annotation on page 11, a few isolated light spots, 12mo (175x105mm), ESTC T11885 (locating only 7 copies in Britain, 4 of which are at Oxford).

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Woodcut ornaments, 11 inserted full-page copper-engraved plates (signed Miller or Price); inserted very neat manuscript leaves of additional Linnean text bound in. Full contemporary calf, gilt spine label damaged with some loss. Two bookplates and an old ownership signature. A very good copy. Raised bands and gilt stamping to spines. General rubbing and wear. Some material loss along extremities, particularly a heads of spines and at corners of boards. Edges of textblocks dyed red. With marbled endpapers. Age toning as expected within. Previous owner's signature on title page in Volume I and tear to adjacent page. Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. First Edition. An eleven volume set complete with a 12th supplementary volume. All 12 volumes uniformly bound in dark red cloth covered hardback bindings, lettered in gilt at the spines. An ex-lib set but showing minimal such markings. Books are firm and square with strong joints, no bumps, no scuffs. Contents are tight and clean, just evenly age-toned. Thus a very good set indeed: very well rebound in relatively modern and presentable matching hardback bindings.

Separate title pages, early owner notes on rear pastedown, old book description laid down on front pastedown; light foxing, pages browned with sporadic damp stains at top edges, not affecting text; boards smudged, soiled, foot of spine chipped 1.5", with some creaking at head of spine, otherwise a very good copy. SCARCE to appear with ten printed sermons collected and bound in one set. Luke Milbourne [1649-1720] was an English Presbyterian clergyman and preacher, who was known for his high flying sermons. This collection of 10 sermons between 1707-1720 reflected on the execution and martyrdom of King Charles, who was accused of treason. In the years that followed, Millbourne called for passive obedience, a religious-political doctrine to obey law and accept punishment for ones crimes. Contemporary calf, modern reback, title leaf coming loose, the last 100 pages with a faint crease in the lower corners, else a very good copy, ex libris RICHARD FREEMAN with his notes at the front. *FREEMAN BNHB #3589 - This, the second edition, is the first to have the plates of grasses; tipped in at the front of this copy are two, unidentified leaves, VERSES BY MR. STILLINGFLEET. The first contribution is an Oration by Linnaeus, 1741 : An oration concerning travelling in one's own countrey. Stillingfleet is to be credited with being the foremost commentator to promote Linnaeus's binomial nomenclature.
