Covers worn and corners rubbed round. Ownership inscription of 'William Lindley' of Chatton, dated 1737 to free front and rear endpaper and fly-leaf. Leaves toned a…nd with a touch of foxing and damp-staining and a little general thumbing and marking. Illustrated with several copper plates engraved by David Lockley. 7 1/2". The Rev. Michael Malard, a French Protestant refugee, was tutor for that language to the princesses, daughters of George II for whom he wrote this instructional book. The book was intended to provide universal knowledge and to 'put them into a condition of being never seduced by Popery' 'to make godly and understanding youths' 'to make greater improvements in the French tongue' and as a 'Traveller's Guide into the finest Towns and Places of Europe, Asia, and Africa'. Contents include scientific subjects such as 'Of Clouds' 'Of the Thunderbolt' etc, chapters on travel, venerated cities and such additions as 'Of the Parisian Gang', occult matters, eg - 'Of Witches, Charmers, Enchanters, Chiromancers, and Necromancers.' 'If one can raise the Devil with Agrippa's Book' and lots of chapters concerned with Popery. This title is described in 'A Biographical History of England. Volume 3' by Rev. Mark Noble - 1806 as "now seldom to be met with; as, besides being a sort of school-book, in which service numbers of the copies were very likely to be worn out, it is a work that would certainly be destroyed by the Roman Catholics whenever it came in their way". David Lockley (ilustrador).

Frontispiece at front of Vol I, (xxvi, a separate overall preface, note to the reader, and index, for the entire set),(xx), 312; (xxiv), 276; (xxii), 287; (xxii), 288; (xxii), 276; (xxii), 264; (xiv), 248; (xviii), 280. Volumes 1-4 and 7-8 wi…th 1718 publication date, Volume One stated Nineteenth Edition on volume title page with 1718 date [this volume having appeared earlier and being reprinted prior to the other volumes), Volumes 2-4 and 7-8 stated Seventh Edition; Volumes 5 and 6 with 1717 date and stated Seventh Edition on title page, with publisher "Tooke" spelled as "Took". Despite the variation in dates and edition statements, In matching contemporary full calf bindings, 5 bands, red and black morocco spine labels, elaborate gilt tooling on spine and edges. An excellent set, light fraying at a few tips, bindings and hinges solid, gilt still bright, spine labels intact, light even foxing to text blocks, pages square and undamaged. The origins of the work are complex and disputable, but the manuscript by Marana survives at least for the early volumes, one or more of the later volumes likely being English additions. Important for the light it shows on what Europeans thought was happening, rather than for exact reporting on what was actually occurring. See Bibliographical Society of America LII (1958), PMLA LXXII (1957), Revue de litterature compares XXXII (1958), and the Times Literary Supplement 12/24/1982 and 7/1/1983 to appreciate the variety of views regarding the authorship of the later volumes. Defore wrote a continuation of this series in 1718, not present here.

"Mackenzie, Sir George, of Rosehaugh (1636/1638 - 1691), lawyer and politician, was born in Dundee either in 1636, as most sources assert, or in 1638, as his own works suggest. To coincide with Charles II's restoration in 1660, Mackenzie published his first work, entitled Aretina, or, The Serious Romance, often regarded as 'the first Scottish novel'. Defending the didactic value of romance-writing as serving to show 'what should be done', he proceeded to incorporate a thinly veiled allegorical account of the recent civil wars within his tale (preface, 7). As justice-depute, Mackenzie became involved in the notorious series of trials staged during one of the largest witch-hunts in Scottish history, when, in sixteen months between 1661 and 1662, over 600 people were accused of acts of sorcery and diabolism. While not denying witchcraft's existence, Mackenzie was disturbed by the ways in which he believed 'poor Innocents die in Multitudes by an unworthy Martyrdom, and Burning comes in fashion', and he therefore insisted on the strictest degrees of judicial rigour and impartiality to dispel popular superstition and hysteria (ibid., Sixteenth pleading, 1.89). Amid recrudescent religious sectarianism, Mackenzie published Religio stoici (1663), attacking 'those mad-cap Zealots of this Bigot Age' (sig. A2r). Reprinted eight times during the Restoration, his tract denounced religious persecution, arguing that to punish 'the body for that which is a guilt of the soul' was as unjust as penalizing one family member for the crime of a relative (ibid., sig. A6r). In 1665 Mackenzie's Moral Essay Preferring Solitude to Publick Employment attracted the attention in London of Abraham Cowley, who allegedly 'sent all about town in vain to get the author' (Vickers, x) before John Evelyn penned a devastatingly skilful rejoinder rejecting Mackenzie's showy elevation of le.

Añadir al carrito2nd. Edn. 3 Vols. 8vo. (22cm. tall x 13cm.). pp. viii, 588; xi, 518; & xiii, 424*. 5 folding facsimiles of Junius' manuscript letters. 1 engraved plate of Junius' seals. From the library of Campbell of Stonefield with his circular bookplate on each front pastedown. In a mid - 19th Century full calf binding by J. Carss, Glasgow. R…ed leather gilt labelled spines with gilt ruled raised bands. The panels are blind stamped. Boards have blind ruling. There is slight rubbing of the leather, and Vol. I has a 4cm. scuff on the lower edge of the front board. There is some foxing throughout. The last 3 leaves of Vol. III. have had 7cm. repairs to the inner margins. *It would appear that these damaged leaves were all that was salvaged from the later signatures of this volume at rebinding. It ends at 224 and 254 pages are called for. This results in the loss of 8 of the miscellaneous letters. This is still a handsome sound set.
