Paperback. Condición: Good. The world's foremost mentalist demonstrates how to condition mind and body in order to accomplish many of the extraordinary mental feats that Kreskin accomplishes. The Amazing Kreskin is a scientist of the mind, relying on natural and scientific means to perform effects that have baffled millions around the world. Natural laws govern the working of the mind, he says. Those who do not understand the laws usually label mental phenomena as supernatural or extrasensory. In fact, few of us have tapped more than a fraction of our mental potential. In this book, he reveals how readers can use their latent mental abilities to enhance the ordinary senses to accomplish effects that resemble telepathy and clairvoyance. Kreskin insists that there is nothing supernatural about any of these effects, and he redefines ESP as extremely sensitive perception to remove all connotation of the other world from this completely natural ability. Kreskin explains how to heighten awareness, increase powers of concentration, discover unknown strengths, tap the power of the unconscious, employ the power of illusion, utilize the power of suggestion, control attitudes and behavior, use silent communication, and predict with educated guesses. He also offers tips on how to hear whispers in a crowded room; predict news stories weeks in advance; read thoughts in the minds of complete strangers; influence others' attitudes and actions; produce hypnotic effects without hypnosis; become a human lie detector; and locate lost objects. Readers will be amazed and amused by what Kreskin can teach them about their own potential.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. The mystery of the Bermuda Triangle had been told and retold in books, magazine articles, and on television and radio talk shows for several years when, in 1972, Larry Kusche, then a reference librarian, decided to collect all the information he could find on each incident. He made contact with the Coast Guard, the Air Force, Lloyd's of London, and many other agencies. He obtained microfilm copies of newspapers from cities where various incidents had been reported. This exhaustive research had an unexpected result - it solved the mystery. It also resulted in the publication of The Bermuda Triangle Mystery-Solved, which is now back in print.Larry Kusche's book is more than an investigation of a mystery; it is a fascinating case history of a manufactured mystery in the making. It shows how over the years the raw materials of official accident reports, newspaper accounts, articles in the mainstream press, and word of mouth have been assimilated into a false mystery.…

Hardback. Condición: Good. Inspiring and uplifting, David Suzuki explains our biological needs, which include dependence on air, water, soil, and the sun's energy--and a fifth vital need, the diversity of life itself. Suzuki shows how these elements connect us to each other and to the Earth and how human beings have a genetically programmed need to live with other species. THE SACRED BALANCE offers the seeds of a new direction for us all.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. In this comprehensive survey of Mormon Polygamy, Richard Van Wagoner details, with precision and detachment, the tumultuous reaction among insiders and outsiders to plural marriage. In an honest, methodical way, he traces the origins, the peculiarities common to the midwestern and later Utah periods, and post-1890 new marriages. Drawing heavily on first-hand accounts, he outlines the theological underpinnings and the personal trauma associated with this lifestyle. What emerges is a portrait that neither discounts nor exaggerates the historical evidence. He presents polygamy in context, neither condemning nor defending, while relevant contemporary accounts are treated sympathetically but interpreted critically. No period of Mormon history is emphasized over another. The result is a systematic view that is unavailable in studies of isolated periods or in the repetitions of folklore that only disguise the reality of what polygamy was. Scattered throughout the western United States today are an estimated 30,000 fundamentalist Mormons who still live "the principle." They, too, are a part of Joseph Smith's legacy and are included in this study.…

Hardback. Condición: Good. Uncovering the Past is an absorbing history of archaeology that traces the study of ancient material culture from its beginnings as a hobby for Renaissance scholars to the sophisticated modern discipline we know today. Professor William Stiebing devotes the first part of his chronicle to the exploits of the colorful, dynamic excavators of archaeology's Heroic Age. One may wonder whether the adventures of Indiana Jones are really far-fetched after reading Steibing's account of Giovanni Belzoni's removal of the seven-ton colossus of Ramesses II, which was dragged by wooden platform and transported by boat from Egypt to London; or of clergyman John Peters' skirmish with Arab tribesmen, who surrounded his excavation site and finally pillaged and burned his camp; or of Heinrich Schliemann's quest to prove the authenticity of Homer's Iliad by searching for ancient Troy in Turkey. The second part of the book shifts the focus to modern archaeology, describing how new methodologies and techniques such as area surveys, statistics, carbon-14 dating, and computer visualization are turning the former pastime of dillettnates into a rigorous science. Uncovering the Past is an excellent introduction to archaeology, both for those who enjoy its romance and those who seek an accurate survey of its history and current status.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. For many years Dr. Kevorkian was at the center of the red-hot debate over physician-assisted suicide. The inventor of the suicide machine stirred up both admiration and controversy. His Deaths with Dignity won him the accolades of the pro-choice movement. Other groups, like Operation Rescue, the AMA, the Hemlock Society, and especially the Michigan State Legislature, insisted that Kevorkian had gone too far. His much-publicized campaign to assist the terminally ill to commit suicide eventually led to his prosecution and imprisonment. In Prescription: Medicide, the famed suicide doctor talks about why he was so committed to his struggle. He addresses the need to assist the terminally ill to die, how death row inmates should be allowed to donate organs after their deaths, and the need for medical reform to create a rational program of dignified, humane, beneficial planned death.…

Hardback. Condición: Good. The popularity of Steve Allen on the Bible, Religion, and Morality led him to take another good look at the good book, a further examination of the Scriptures, designed to interest the average reader in reasonable analysis of the most influential document in Western civilization. Like his previous book, More Steve Allen on the Bible, Religion, and Morality is arranged alphabetically with totally new entries. Although the Bible has been referred to, quoted from, and applied to broad social issues and private problems for centuries, Allen asserts that the degree of common ignorance as to its content is vast and deep. Noting that adults rarely read the Bible, Allen is convinced that the millions who do read it are not able to understand certain passages at all. Steve Allen's Bible study began during his travels: he would peruse the Bibles found in any hotel room, marking passages that would strike him as extraordinary, beautiful - or extremely confusing. Spellbound by the mystery of it, he became aware that from the very beginning the text leads not just to scholarly argument, but directly to controversy that has, over the centuries and even today, fostered unaccountable slaughter and atrocity. And, he notes, it is perhaps of greater urgency now than ever before that all Americans become conversant with the Bible, because of those who would use it as a weapon to force their views on the rest of the population. Throughout the book, Allen offers direct quotes from biblical scholars - Catholic, Protestant, Judaic - in addition to generous references to the views of various scholarly specialists. His goal - to make people think reasonably about the Bible - is achieved through clear andreadable prose.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Can you tell when you're being deceived? This classic work on critical thinking - now fully updated and revised - uses a novel approach to teach the basics of informal logic. On the assumption that it takes one to know one, the authors have written the book from the point of view of someone who wishes to deceive, mislead, or manipulate others. Having mastered the art of deception, readers will then be able to detect the misuse or abuse of logic when they encounter it in others - whether in a heated political debate or while trying to evaluate the claims of a persuasive sales person. Using a host of real-world examples, the authors show you how to win an argument, defend a case, recognize a fallacy, see through deception, persuade a skeptic, and turn defeat into victory. Not only do they discuss the fundamentals of logic (premises, conclusions, syllogisms, common fallacies, etc.), but they also consider important related issues often encountered in face-to-face debates, such as gaining a sympathetic audience, responding to audience reaction, using nonverbal devices, clearly presenting the facts, refutation, and driving home a concluding argument. Whether you're preparing for law school or you just want to become more adept at making your points and analyzing others' arguments, The Art of Deception will give you the intellectual tools to become a more effective thinker and speaker. Helpful exercises and discussion questions are also included.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. Biologists study life in its various physical forms, while philosophy of biology seeks answers to questions about the nature, purpose, and impact of this research. What permits us to distinguish between living and nonliving things even though both are made of the same minerals? What moral questions arise regarding genetic engineering or cloning? What is more relevant to human nature: genetics or sociocultural influences? Condición: Good. The volume contains new publications of five works by Einstein - his valuable book Relativity: The Special and the General Theory, written for a wider audience - and four articles, which nicely complement the issues discussed in the book. The selected works contain not only Einstein's own explanations of his revolutionary contributions to fundamental physics, but also give the readers, particularly his popular book, the unique chance to be exposed to Einstein's original thinking in action. Einstein's five works included in the volume are:1. Relativity: The Special and the General Theory. A Popular Exposition 2. What is the Theory of Relativity, written at the request of The London Times and published on November 28, 19193. Ether and the Theory of Relativity, An Address delivered on May 5th, 1920 in the University of Leyden4. Geometry and Experience, An expanded form of an Address to the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin on January 27th, 19215. A Brief Outline of the Development of the Theory of Relativity, Nature volume 106, pages 782-784 (17 February 1921)One notable issue - the concept of relativistic mass - is not discussed in Einstein's five works republished in the volume. Although he wrote in his popular book (included here, p. 36) the inertial mass of a body is not a constant, Einstein did not discuss the concept of relativistic mass (i.e., the relativistic increase of the mass of a body as its velocity increases), which he silently abandoned after using it in his 1905 paper, where he defined longitudinal mass and transverse mass. As Einstein's unclear view of the relativistic mass might have provided some encouragement for what has probably been the most vigorous campaign ever waged against the concept of relativistic mass, an Appendix On Relativistic Mass is included in this volume to address that unprecedented campaign and to help the readers make their own decision on the concept of relativistic mass.…

Paperback. Condición: Good.
