Contains transcribed articles from two Georgia newspapers of the Reconstruction Era: The Quitman Banner and Southern Enterprise (Thomasville). The brief articles are almost universally racist and anti-Black. In the introduction, the authors state their intention is not to inflame but to show history "as it really was" with all the racial prejudice and hatred which caused such great bloodshed. While the content of the book is disturbing, it stands as an example of how the printed word was used to exploit fear and hatred in the South after the Civil War.…

Glossy pictorial cover. Condición: Very good. First Edition. 315p octavo, a very good copy rubbed along the spine at the spineheads, light wear to the corners. Author's own copy with his statement on the inside front panel "A T Goodloe Corrected Copy" where he lists 16 pages and the lists them in more detail on the front fly leaf. Author was a member of the 35th Alabama Infantry Regiment remembered for its capture of a celebrated cannon ("Lady Richmond") belonging to a Yankee battery at the battle for Corinth which was stormed and captured by the 35th Alabama and Ninth Arkansas Regiments Oct 2 1862. The author was present and elaborate the true details of the capture of which he was involved. He makes hand corrections, and underlining on more than 50 pages. He details corrections and additions on the inside front panel, front fly leaf and another leaf preceding the title page, plus 2 sheets laid in with manuscript notes. On the blank preceding the title page he lists the various national groups fighting for the Union and their number vs the Confederates, plus another sheet upon which he lists "Lines of Battle" on one side and Yankees and Rebels numbers again. "This is one of the few Alabama units which have a first hand account available . Goodloe served as a 1st Lt. in Company D. The book contains no rosters, but has an excellent account of the war and interesting perspective on the life of the Negroes".…
