Published by the author in 1857, this is the condensed edition of the authors biography, bound in the original cloth with later replacement cloth spine, 9 inches tall approx., 204 pages, plus illustrations. The books cover is rubbed and marked, and is ex-Shropshire Library with their catalogue number to the spine, library plate to front endpaper, stamp to reverse of title page, (pictured) small hole to one page just touching the text, browning and foxing on an off throughout, else in good acceptable condition. Charles Hulbert (18 February 1778 - 9 October 1857) was an English businessman and writer. The son of Thomas Hulbert of Hulbert Green, near Cheadle, Cheshire, he was born in Manchester on 18 February 1778, and educated at the grammar school of Halton, Cheshire. After learning cotton-weaving he became manager, at the age of twenty-two, of a large print works at Middleton, near Manchester, and subsequently began business with his elder brother at Swinton, also near Manchester. In 1803, he moved to Shrewsbury, and in conjunction with others leased some large factories at Coleham on the outskirts of the town. He applied, but unsuccessfully, for ordination in the Church of England. He entered Sunday school and other religious work, carrying on classes and services at the factory. He became acquainted with the Shropshire Methodist Circuit and guest-preached at Wellington, Madeley and Coalbrookdale. He assisted Joseph Lancaster in building one of his Lancasterian schools in Shrewsbury. At the request of William Wilberforce and Henry Grey Bennet (who was then Shrewsbury's local Member of Parliament) in 1808 he drew up a report on the management of factories, as an answer to a claim made in parliament that manufactories were hotbeds of vice. Soon afterwards he declined an offer to move to St. Petersburg, made to him, it is said, by an agent of the emperor of Russia. In 1813, his business as a cotton manufacturer having fallen off, he opened a bookshop and printing-office at Shrewsbury, where he published the Salopian Magazine (1815-17), and printed many small books, most of them written by himself. He also traded as an auctioneer. In 1825 he gave up the lease of the factory, returning it to its builder John Carline. In 1827 he built a house at Hadnall, near Shrewsbury, which he called 'Providence Grove,' and here he continued to print and publish his writings. His house burned down, and his large library was destroyed, on 7 January 1839; but he was able by a public subscription and a grant from the Royal Literary Fund, to rebuild his residence and to purchase an annuity. He died there after a stroke on 7 October 1857 aged 79, and was buried at the parish church in Hadnall, where his epitaph speaks of "a diversified and uesful life".

Armorial bookplate of Frederick William Cosens. First edition of these witty poems by W.T. Moncrieff (1794-1857, born William Thomas Thomas), an exceptionally prolific dramatiser of novels and other works. Moncrieff ran Astley's in the late teens, where he staged spectacular shows with horses, including wonderful effects such as fire, waterfalls, dioramas and other amazing effects. Although he later went blind and ended his days in the Charterhouse, the present poems were written and published during Moncrieff's days of prosperity and fecundity: they show him reading and translating from Italian, French and German as well as Latin and Greek, and attempting a wide range of different verse forms. His footnotes also reference contemporary English poets such as Byron and Coleridge. The dedicatory poem, and the concluding poem in the volume, are addressed to his wife Mary Anne, who had died in May 1828 at the age of only 22. The book appears to have been printed at his own private press at Saville House, Lambeth: he seems to have lived nearby, because the preface is signed from 5 Union Place, Lambeth. Two copies only in Copac, at the BL and Cambridge UL.

Scarce history of the Whig Party and William Sacheverell, written and privately printed by the author and reportedly limited to 53 copies. Includes numerous illustrations, with depictions of the Green Ribbon Club and a pope-burning. Tan cloth with leather spine, gilt spine lettering, xvi, 225p. One page prospectus tipped onto front free endpaper describing the book as "An account of the political career of William Sacheverell, the first Whig leader of the House of Commons". The prospectus anticipated publication in June, 1891, but the book was not published until 1894. Some wear and chipping to the spine ends, spine leather dried but archivally stabilized, corners bumped and frayed. Internally much better, with good hinges, firm binding, age-toned endpapers, tiny round stamp of Bodleian Library on reverse side of title page, pages lightly age-toned but clean and free from names or other markings. Published in 1841, this is a very scarce example in the original wrappers of the authors account of the terrible fire at his home, Providence Grove, in Shrewsbury Shropshire, the author Charles Hulbert produced a number of books of local and international interest, all published from his private press, the book is 6.5 inches tall approx., running to 12 pages with a frontispiece and one further plate, plus an 8 page catalogue of the authors works, some darkening and foxing to covers, some mild foxing within else in good general condition. Leroux's 1876 catalogue of Callery's library priced the octavo at 60 francs, noting the folio at 100 francs and already sold out, signalling early scarcity of this larger issue. - A substantial Macao production on fragile, locally made paper, here preserved in remarkable state with wide margins and the contemporary boards, and bearing the ticket of the leading Paris Orientalist bookseller Benjamin Duprat. - Partly uncut. Occasional light marginal browning and a few spots; short closed tear at foot of Part I, pp. 81f.; endpapers browned; light wear to extremities. Small 8vo, contemporary black morocco, skillfully rebacked, gilt decorations and lettering, a.e.g. Frontis portrait of the author after a portrait by R. Reading. Bound in before the portrait is a ten-page manuscript of Monceieff's poem "An Allegory," signed and dated September 20, 1845. A collection of about 100 poems in several forms by the playwright, theatre manager, miscellaneous writer and apparently occasional printer, as well. William Thomas Moncrieff (1794-1857) was a self-described "hack," and a prolific one, who specialized in adapting novels for the stage and who made what little money he could in theatre and literary work of any kind. A few years after this volume was published, Moncrieff began struggling with progressive blindness. Poems contains sonnets, songs, ballads, epigrams and madrigals, mostly on the subject of unrequited love, something at which Moncrieff appears to have had a great deal of experience. At the foot of the final page of text is the imprint "W. T. Moncrieff, Typ. Saville House, Lamberth." Inscribed at the head of the title-page "To J. Miles Esqr / With the Author's best acknowledgements." The manuscript poems go into length about the aging process and loss of sight and is certainly in part autobiographical. Ornamental vignettes. Half calf, marbled boards. First edition of one of the most charming 18th century illustrated book, a witty discussion of contemporary army tactics by an Austrian field marshal. The Prince de Ligne (1735-1814) first distinguished himself during the Seven-Years' War against Frederick the Great whom he greatly admired and who appears to be the only authority not questioned here. Ligne seems to have been a follower of the French tactician Guibert, who in turn had been influenced by the Prussian method. The first volume comprises general observations on cavalry and infantry, artillery, fortification, discipline etc, as well as chapters on military medicine and hospitals; it is adorned with exquisite miniature textual illustrations (48 x 73mm) of famous battles of the Seven Years' War (1756-63), engraved by Choffard after designs by the author, making it one of the most charming of 18th century books. The second volume, entitled 'Fantaisies Militaires', is devoted to battle orders, composition of army units, and general manoeuvres. This edition is also interesting as a typographical curiosity, having been printed at the author's private press at Beloeil Castle, famous for its gardens, and published with a spurious imprint. It was later reprinted at Dresden and translated into German in 1783. A few occasional insignificant light traces of usage, but a very good copy from the Liechtenstein collection with armorial bookplate on verso of front flyleaf of each volume. Neither bears a date of publication, but the Preface to the first volume is dated May 8, 1923, and that of the second volume, October 1935. This work is very scarce, and as few as eighty sets are claimed to have been published. In his Preface to Part II Norman Tindale says " The first part was issued in October 1933 (sic), and met with instant acceptance, the hundred copies of the edition being exhausted within a few weeks." Both volumes are bound in matching dark brown cloth, with a blindstamped border to the front cover and gilt title and volume number to the spine. Vol I marbled eps, ppi-viii and 1-176; Vol II plain eps, pp i-vi and 1-47. With the exception of minor flecking to the covers, both volumes are in fine codition, with the signatures of J.A.Angas-Johnson on the front pastedown and R.P.Tilbrook on ffep or fly. Volume II also bears the following endorsement at the head of the title page: "To dearest Dorrie from Angas with love. Very rare.".

Very good condition in original slightly wrinkled and faded blue cloth board, typed title label to front. Signed by the author to front free end paper with one typed and one handwritten letters from tour members who had read the manuscript and shared other memories laid in.
